As someone who's been involved with combat sports his whole life and in the past 6-8 years I've also been more focused on building muscle and strength, I can be the first person to say how hard it is to eat enough food to grow when you're doing both types of training and in the gym six days a week sometimes 2 hours per session or multiple sessions per day. I work full-time as a painter I work part-time at night at the gym and on other nights I work part-time doing deliveries for my buddies restaurant and then I do a little bit of online coaching and rep for MA research. I am absolutely aware of how hard it can be to squeeze the food in.
But it doesn't change the fact that food is number one.
I'm sure there's a couple people in this thread right now who remember earlier this year I made a goal to Max my body weight out at 220-230 lb and break some PRS.
And guess what didn't happen, even on a full-blown steroid cycle with about a gram of gear I could not get close to my goal because the amount of training I was doing was overriding the amount of food I was eating.
Even on steroids you can't override the food and the more gear you take the more your metabolism goes up and the more food you're going to need to eat in the first place.
With all that being said, I work multiple jobs, I work well over 60 hours per week, I got two kids and six animals to take care of, outside of my 60 hours of work I also have my clients I have to respond to after hours, and I still manage to get enough food in to weigh a lean 200 lb at 5 ft 9.
But because I couldnt shovel down enough food ,215 or 225 is out of the picture. Until I can make time to get the food in.
So in my opinion here are 3 valuable tips for anyone to use when they can't get enough food in on a regular basis, and if you do these things maybe you won't waste your first steroid cycle by eating at maintenance.
Tip number 1. is to make a shake every single morning with about a thousand calories and about 1/3 of your daily protein requirements. So you're starting your day by hitting 1/3 of your macros in liquid form before you even walk out the door.
Tip #2 is eating on the move. Go to the store and get yourself some wraps, bananas and higher protein granola bars. A rap or a banana or a granola bar can all be eaten with one hand while doing whatever else it is you're doing. I used to travel two hours per day throughout my work day and having a wrap or a granola bar and a piece of fruit on every trip guarantees an extra meal.
Tip 3 is for training days only. Make sure you get a pre-workout meal of some sort in and then bring to the gym with you a carb drink. You can easily get a hundred grams of carbohydrates into a easily drinkable form. You can do it with a card powder or you can do it with Gatorade and fruit juices it doesn't really matter to me as long as you do it. You can also keep a bag of gummy bears or any type of candy made from glucose syrup and snack on those during your workouts as well. Maybe you've got 15 minute rest in between rolling and doing your heavy bag work, perfect eat a handful of gummy bears and take a sip of your carb drink.
I often will get 600 calories from carbs during my workouts.
