Woke up with shoulder pain... What do you guys do?

Welp I guess I'm at that age, I hurt myself sleeping more often than in the gym. Woke up this morning with a sore left shoulder. It hurts to reach forward or up- so much so that driving to the office, putting on a shirt, morning routine was difficult. Feels tight in left trap, tricep and rear delt, ultimately culminating in shoulder joint. I did do a pretty intense shoulder focused upper body day three days ago and supplemented the dreaded ARACHIDONIC ACID, but everything felt fine then and after. I am also a side sleeper and probably spent most of the night on my left side. I've also been under a good amount of stress and cortisol is definitely high right now. Maybe this:

I am a BPC wh*re so I pinned BPC and TB immediately, did some light stretching, and am going to modify my upper body workout later today to avoid turning this into a real injury.

What do you guys do when you feel this kind of thing coming on?

58 yr old here. Side sleeping wrecks the shoulder (the whole quadrant in fact) I am sleeping on especially if its a bit of a jacked up shoulder to start with. If I sleep on my "bad shoulder" pretty much all night for a couple of nights in a row, I am screwed for days trying to continue working out, trying to "make progress" and trying to decompress it etc.. If I sleep on the other side for a few nights or really limit the "bad shoulder" side, all my problems start going away (and they start going to the other side though). When I sleep on my back, I have to pee 3-4 times a night though lol. So I go to bed on my back and when I switch to my good side and really try to limit sleeping on my bad side. As I get older, this issue is becoming more and more of a problem - if its not addressed. I think lymphatic drainage sites in the pecs and traps and underarms simply don't drain as well as they used too - and that sleeping on them (while they are trying to recover (drain) causes the "issue" (side sleeping is forcing (under weight) the shoulder into a more closed position for many hours, blocking lymphatic drainage, partially blocking nerves, lack of blood flow etc..

Using a massage gun on these sites, for a couple of minutes pre-bed (and in the morning) really does help! If I have this drainage maintained and don't sleep too much on the known bad side, then I can make progress sometimes for up to a couple of months before going over "the limit". And all the associated knots and soreness and bullshit magically go away. Good luck!

Thanks man I'll try that tonight.

I also use a theracane (lots of cheap knockoffs) to get deep in the armpit and all around that area ( pec minor, lats etc) a few times a week. It really helps shoulder mobility.

I have a cat that sleeps right next to me and gets mad when I move so I'm pretty much forced to lay on my back all night.
My wife uses one of those curvy pillows that support the neck and allows the shoulder to be in a more natural position when side sleeping.
So getting a cat or one of those curvy pillows might help. I recommend the pillow because sleeping next to anything with razor sharp claws may be effective but has some drawbacks.

when I get it in that particular area I usually throw up first, then I rub it against a door jamb or lacrosse ball or I use bands to pull it and get a nice stretch (sorta Kelly Starret type stuff). for all other shoulder pains I use a kettlebell and do kb armbars, they're like magic. but this spot in particular makes me feel like puking and the only fix for me is applying intense pressure to it. my wife really almost isn't strong enough even to kneed it out with her knuckles.

That second stretch is one I do almost daily. You want to feel it down low in the serratus and let it pull your shoulder up - go easy! It's my #1 stretch and the reason I am still pressing heavy at 58yrs old.

Yeah do those stretches, do some dead hangs if you can, But ultimately have good posture and find a better way to sleep because once that shoulder pain sets in from sleeping on it wrong it really gets bad. Knock on wood I haven't had it in a while but I feel like that shoulder pain you get from sleeping on it wrong is almost worse than any other kind of shoulder pain especially when it lingers. And it's 10 times more annoying cuz you got no clue why it's there in the first place. When you're sleeping in a crappy position it cuts off blood flow and causes all kinds of inflammation in the joint and that's when it starts lingering around for days. The more often you sleep wrong the more that inflammation builds up. Of course unless there's some kind of an underlying issue causing it in the first place but just sleeping on it wrong in general will do that to you

Thanks guys! Did these stretches, self tortured with a theracane and theragun and adjusted my sleeping position with a bigger pillow last night. Also been pinning BPC for good measure. As much as I like Arachiodonic Acid, I might have to retire that supp - as it does really seem to trigger little things like this.

It really is a worse pain than anything that happens in the gym - but I'm happy to say it has gone away pretty quickly with everyone's tips. Upper body tomorrow should be doable.
