Slicin' and Dicin'

Some great work and sounds like a fun weekend coming up!! Have to let me know how the brine bird turns out!! We have started doing that on like chicken wings but haven’t done a whole bird yet. We just do like a 24 hr brine but man it’s makes a difference.

Hell yeah going to give that a go one of these weekends! 🤘🏻
people make a real big deal about plucking them and using those chicken pluckers but I sorta don't think its worth the time or money. i'm sure you already know plenty, but I just grab an inch of skin from the breast, get under there with a knife, and skin the whole bird out in like 60 seconds. its way faster and a roasted skinless chicken tastes amazing. I honestly don't feel like i'm missing anything from skinning it, personally....?

Split some of that work between standing and sitting to see how isolation affected the lift. I'm 50/50 on it.

Oh man two a days are so much more fun when it's not all cardio.

That bird looks yummy!
SOOOOO good. I have 5 left to harvest. I've been thinning out the flock slowly basically letting the best looking/strongest/healthiest keep eating and getting fatter. at this stage they can put on a full 1lb+ per week. so I'll probably finish them all by this weekend. Then I'm going to rethink life a bit. I think I want to build a bigger run and do these Freedom Rangers next. They're not going to get as big, but they are a little bit healthier bird.

Freedom Rangers:

vs Cornish Cross:

Is 63-77 when you would harvest the Freedom Rangers or would they be fine going up to the 98 to get bigger? I know the cornish legs can break as mentioned previously under the weight since they grow so fast, is that an issue with the freedom rangers?

the cornish I harvested last night I did because even though she was alive, I could tell she didn't want to get up and walk around anymore. that can be because of leg issues (although I couldn't find a break) or just overall internal organ stress from eating 24/7 and just growing way too damn fast. The Rangers some people claim taste better (hard to believe, cause the CC are pretty dang good!) and they are supposed to be a much healthier animal because they don't outgrow their health like the cornish cross do.

With the Cornish Cross i'm aiming to harvest anytime between 6-8 weeks. some people will go to 9+ but depending on how you feed them you're tempting fate with little heart attacks and broken legs.

Comparatively everyone says 11 weeks plus on the Rangers for a smaller bird. If I can set myself up with enough space to raise 20 of them, I bet I'd probably start harvesting 5 birds a week around week 9 depending how big they are.

Their feed requirements go up quite a bit as you keep squeezing those weeks in. Kinda like you said, it's not just about saving money, but I like to look at it as where am I squeezing value to justify it. The feed is fairly cheap at about $30 from our co-op for a 50lb bag of high protein for the broilers so I think what I'm looking to gain from this is:

a. control my food supply, even if only 10-20% of our total food intake for the year is homegrown that's something.

b. slightly better cost compared to buying full organic, but slightly worse than store most likely. although the weight of my meat is true weight with no pumped in water or salt to fake the weight.

c. sorta hone a skill that I can apply later (or I may find that I never want to do it again! LOL). <-- I sorta see myself as collecting skills right now and finding ways to do things more effeciently. some of my skills (like fermentation) seem to become hobbies I enjoy. harvesting meat birds, the jury is out. took me less than 5 minutes to dispatch a bird last night, carve up the meat, and throw wings/legs into one bag, breast into another, carcass into a third. so that's no problem. But raising 20 birds to say 12 weeks would be all of June-August making sure they have 24/7 access to food and water and predator protection. I don't yet know if I will enjoy doing that work, or resent it....

my biggest dream and goal I think right now in life is to get my wife out of the workforce. That one has been weighing on me heavily and I'm not 100% sure how to do that yet. a few years ago before inflation took such a big bite out of everything it would have been doable but hard. now I'm like.... hmm.... so we keep collecting skills on the funny farm to see if there are ways she can contribute doing things that are more meaningful for her.

after being sick almost 2 weeks last night she was feeling better and I came home to dinner already cooking, laundry done and folded, chickens fed and watered, dogs already exercised and she even made a sandwhich and set it aside for me as an "emergency" meal in case I was hungry before dinner! 😂 😂 😂 its definitely a lifestyle she wants but good grief the cost of living now days is insane.

I would love to retire my wife too, but that would require a completely different tax bracket for me. She has expressed she would love to stay home but like you said the affordability is just not there. That is the one thing that I think was the worst with feminism, it made it so that a 2 income household was required for all but the most affluent, or those willing to live the simplest lifestyle possible to make it happen. My wife makes about 80% of what I do, and that is HARD TO REPLACE!!!!

man I agree with you 100%
my buddy and co-worker has his wife staying home right now with 2 kids and while I don't know what his debt is like, I do know what his income is and I'm like............ I don't know how you do it dude. it's a flex though. it's a different kind of luxury.

You know when we were into boating, it really wasn't THAT expensive. for $190-200/month I could have a boat moored on the water 24/7 and get gas for under $2/gallon. a week long summer boating trip to marinas for $38/night was cheaper than flying somewhere. we got rid of all that excess when she had her cancer and now days that same slip at the marina is over $400 per month, the marinas are $75-100/night, and the fuel out here is over $6/gallon. But even cutting back on frivolous stuff like that the basics are all up.

we are buckling down more and more practicing and looking for ways to cut though. Recently t-mobile approved their wifi unit at our address and its less than half price of comcast internet. We also cut the cable years ago and went 100% to streaming for half price. so as we learn and explore cost cutting measures... maybe we are getting closer, idk. but it sure would be a cool luxury!!!

I told my wife last night what you were saying and that if we go to single income I'd have to drop my natty supplements cause they're so much more expensive and just go pure pharma enchanced since injectable anabolics cost less. 😂 😂

luckily I still have enough var on hand for a run or two lol

Yeah, and to be honest, I need to go in and do a review of the streaming companies we are paying. I feel like gradually they have all increased to the point that it is no longer any cheaper than the cable was. Once you count High speed ethernet, and 20-28$ per streaming service it can really get away from you. I hadn't really paid attention, but looking now, my netflix alone is $27.

no joke!! I go through my amazon subscriptions list occasionally and cancel subs I don't think we are using because with the ala carte method they have now you can always just add them in later but they can get away from you really fast. our t-mobile acct throws in free netflix and hulu (with ads) but it took me a while to figure out how to make that work. they fixed the netflix one so basically you just log in and they take over the billing. the hulu one is a little different though, you have to cancel your hulu first, then when it runs out, activate it again with t-mobile so we'll see how that works. But I figure that right there is like $30-40/month ($480 per year??). If their mobile hotspot works (which it looks like its going to. I have all our devices on it right now at home for the past week with no issues) then thats $50/month savings from comcast. so between those two small changes thats $1k/year. Its not retirement money but better than a poke in the eye!

What kind of speeds are you getting on it?

What kind of speeds are you getting on it?
for anyone techy, really really slow. like 50-150mbps download and I've seen 1-5mbps upload with up to like a 53ms latency, which I think is the real potential issue. (comparatively at work I just tested at 159, 18.4 and 5ms so also not phenomenal but just fine).

even though these numbers don't look good, I ran a test and turned on my boys xbox and had it stream fortnite while I had netflix running on a tv and prime on another tv, trying to stress test it with multiple devices and my phone playing music.

everything worked! It comes with a mesh so right now my old orbi system isn't even connected. the wifi box is at the far end of the hosue where we have basically the only "upstairs" window which improved my reception to 4 out of 5 bars. (only had 3 bars downstairs). so if I had better reception, I should have better speeds but so far this week my wife has been able to turn on and watch tv (we are 100% streaming since no comcast cable etc) and the only time she complained was actually the firestick needing to be reset, the internet itself was fine. fingers crossed. I have to offically make the decision next week as that will be the end of my 14day free trial but right now I think its good to go.

Yeah, if you are not doing a lot of gaming it is not going to be an issue, for gaming that latency is a death sentence. Otherwise that download speed is plenty sufficient for almost anything especially if you are not running 25 devices on it. The upload speed sucks but if you aren't doing a lot of uploading then I wouldn't worry about it.

You might try sending some emails with large attachments, or saving a large file or folder up to google drive or something just to see what you would experience if you needed to do that at some point while working from home. That might be the deal breaker.

I'm not much of a gamer myself mostly cause I don't have time and I heard my wife bitch a lot about her ex being on his "video games" so I've already logged that in the "turn off" category for her and the "not gonna get me nookie" box. so when my boy and I have alone time we'll rally fortnite together but thats about it. My wife is headed to the Washington coast this weekend with her girls and aunt and friends so my boy and I will be able to stress test the internet LOL. Since the t-mobile is free for 2 weeks I haven't killed the comcast yet, so this weekend we will have the chance to try both, that will be the real decision maker!! LOL

I'll have to run another speed test on it tonight too. that first night when I got those numbers I posted above the latency did drop under 10ms a couple times because I kept repeatedly testing it and going back and forth between comcast / t-mobile on my phones wifi to test but it wasn't consistently ok, it was more consistently slow on the speed test even though performance seemed OK.

Man this is a hard one and one of the many reasons for are relocation. It’s definitely not easy, we have been making it work but hardly saving anything back. Of course when we start the home building it’s going to be even a little tighter at times but I’m just going to do what I can out of pocket and then save and then build. So it’s going to be a process but just not interested in doing any sort of loan if I can help it.

Whelp, Narrows Bridge is undergoing emergency repairs (welcome to Washington) so being down to 2 lanes on a major highway added about 1.5hrs to cross a 1mile long bridge, lol. Seeing this I went towards the gym but as traffic continued to look worse I aborted and made the effort to get home reasonably so I could take care of the animals.

Growing up my neighbors/buddys dad built their new house over the outside of their existing house. They basically built like a 4 bedroom 2 or 3 bath farm house shell around the outside of their 1bdrm and then when it was complete, he gutted the interior house piece by piece. Sorta genius and sorta crazy but they got that farm house built over a period of about 10 years I think (turned out really nice too). They were pissed when the county finally figured it out since they had never bothered with permitting or anything lol.

Weird day/month. We have like 13,500sq feet in this commercial park. One of the neighbors is a cannabis grow facility. Somehow they drew too much and popped the transformer in the most impressive way I've seen, killed power to basically our whole block. Luckily we rent so it's the landlords issue and I'm not a fan of this landlord.

Well they got industrial sized generators up for each individual building. But, they turn them off during non business hours...

So what do the local tweakers do? Wait till everyone goes home to swipe the copper

Today they are shutting everything down at 10am so that the local utility can finish reconnecting the buildings so basically half day at work. Let's me get a little more time in at the gym before I grab my boy for our screw off weekend.

Tomorrow nights dinner. I have 3 left to Harvest but they are doing so well I'm going to let them grow until Mid May I think and harvest them post vacation. Right now the whole meat bird process has gone so well that I think I might try to set up my brooder and a small chicken run (think micro pasture) for 30 birds that I'd aim to start June 1st. I am toying around with a blend of 2 or 3 different meat bird species with the idea that I'd possibly start butchering 2 a week every Sunday in August.

1777316162201.webp

Some meal prep this week for lunches:

1777316181573.webp

I've been seeing reports of people harvesting 30-40 birds and netting 250-300lbs of finished meat in the freezer. My wife told me that locally, the organic chickens are going for $9.99+/lb. we do get some more organic product than we used to, but it's still not a high priority to us usually. Here are some potential numbers I'm looking at for a summer meat flock:

1777316543458.webp

1777316559528.webp

1777316583087.webp

1777316605777.webp

I've been feeding Claude with data along the way such as our organic feed costs from the local co-op ($27-30/50lb bag), price of chicks, any that die. (we've had fantastic success, only 2 chicks have died in the last 6 years that I can think of). and then targeting specific weights/dates of harvest.

1777316746918.webp

The benefit to going all cornish cross is much more meat yield, in a shorter period of time, which means less feed costs too. The upside to going with some Red Rangers is that they are a healthier bird that will live much longer so i can spread out butchering over the fall and into the winter. whereas cornish cross really usually are not expected to live long because they grow so fast they have heart attacks, organ failure, and broken legs. So I would have to harvest all of them in a smaller window.

1777316828520.webp

so thats the cost breakdown so far @MrKleen73
35 cornish cross
around 224lbs average expectation (Claude estimaates $4.50/lb meat value grocery store value $1008)
my cost $399 all said and done.
saving = $609 on meat bill.

There is a little more too this though. We save our egg shells and my wife crushes them up and uses them as a calcium base for various things like plant water, slug repellent around the garden, and the layers can eat egg shells to boost their calcium.

None of our dinner scraps go to waste. all our veggies, peals, rinds, etc and salad / bread leftovers from us and the neighbors to go the chickens as a supplement.

the chicken coop produces chicken manure which is fertilizer for the garden.

the dead meat birds give us breasts, legs, wings.
Their carcass makes soup stock.
their legs, livers, hearts and gizzards to go the dogs (although I steal some as well) lol.

so there is a complete circle here where things keep going back into things.

I was thinking about it in the Sauna last night how all these variables had I just learned about them today would be an overwhelming mess of ideas to apply at once, so it's been quite a few years of adding effeciencies mostly by accident, which have turned out to be positives. I mean we first got back into chickens around 2020. I had told my wife for a few years we should, but when COVID hit, lockdowns, started, the girls were home from high school and easter was round the corner my wife said "we should get chickens" lol. so I built the first coop in time for Easter 2020 and then it grew from there....

My wife and I have been filling Claude with data in regards to what we can do, what we understand and have done, etc around the farm, then having him organize it with schedules and whatnot in case we do pull the trigger on her testing retirement, to see what kind of supplemental revenue she could potentially pull from the funny farm.

not going to go nuts and risk anything on deads thursday before I have to fly but want to get the practice and ROM in.

yeah catch 22, feel like I should be buckling down to last minute bikini body prep, but don't want to risk anything lol. Been busy as sin too, I wanted a 2 a day yesterday for more accessories but just didn't have time with last minute travel prep etc.

Where are you going for vacation? Heading down to Mexico for the beach again?

I wish! We are headed down to Marsh Harbor in Abaco, Bahamas. I don't know much about it to be honest, I've never been there or even to Florida. We have looked at the Bahamas and other areas of the Carribbean like Seg's recent trip to Punta Cana many times but the flights are pretty miserable from Seattle. we leave at like 10:15pm, get to Miami for a 4hr layover, then another 1hr flight over to the island.... to be honest I usually feel like a pretty good life hacker when it comes to finding good flights and best prices and that redeye is the best I could find!

Some friends of ours are relocating to Florida and late last year they invited us on this trip they're going on. it appears to be the microman version of Below Deck

so basically we fly in, stay one night in a local vrbo, then join 4 couples (1 we know) on this boat for a week cruising around. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be the black sheep, there was a checklist of things you could request (kayaks, SUP, golf carts, fishing gear) and I'm the only person in the group that requested trolling gear for fishing cause honestly I'm not sure what else there is to do lol! Mexico I understand really well and know how to walk from bar to bar or taco place to taco place and just mingle and enjoy the culture but this will be a lot more downtime/book reading I think.

Notes
Decent pump sesh. Weighed in at 187 this morning which I'm decently happy with. One more gym sesh hopefully before travel

Gonna take phosphatidic acid XT with me to keep it in the system and get more + alpha one on order for when I get home.

Mid May will be a deciding point. I would love to do a strength cycle because the lifting is more regimented and sometimes feels more intentional and with purpose, but I do not want to bulk or enter into much of a surplus at all (if any) at this point of spring. Ideally, I'd love to see what cutting another 10lbs off looks like.

So come the week of May 12th I'll be deciding if I'm rejuvenated for the next push on a cut, or if I change approach a bit... Hopefully I don't get home TOO much heavier, lol. But I'm not too concerned. My wife and I are pretty good at eating while travelling while enjoying some splurges.

We'll also be watching our pennies very tightly and I'll be having to be very picky on supplementation. I am pretty sure we are going to move forward with trying to have her end her job within the next 2 months. Its something I've felt pretty convicted on internally and last night she was the perkiest I have seen in a very long time. Of course the house was still a bit of chaos as it always is with a small woman who moves like a hummingbird, but she was like a 16 yr old girl, and if I can help her capture more of her own spirit and happiness it will be worth the financial change we'll be adopting. Fingers crossed... virgin territory.

That’s awesome and I hope it all works out for you and her!

That sounds like a great plan, and hopefully you’ll be able to make it work. Happy Wife-Happy Life.😎

Have you done Hawaii? From where you're at that's probably not too bad of a flight I'd guess? From where I sit on the east coast it's a pain... but one day!

Just bring your calories a hair below maintenance with high carbs and moderate protein and train hard.

Will slowly recomp that way without having to do anything crazy to your diet.

its intimidating but I think we are getting our ducks in a row to give it the ol' college try. Plus the girl is so frugal and a.d.h.d. She'll likely be selling flowers, garden starts, eggs etc lol

I did Waikiki in 2002 and snorkeled hanauma bay when it was a bit easier to just show up and go. I think you have to reserve a spot there now. Maui was around 2013 with the hike through Haleakala crater, and then my wife and I did Kauai I think in 2017 or 2018 we stayed at Kalapaki Beach and drove into Poipu (the only sunny spot on the island) for good weather, and up to princeville one day to hike into Hanakapiai falls. The falls are an amazing 300ft spectacle, but the hike is NASTY, muddy and slippery. I didn't mind it, but my wife hated the hike and it was funny cause every time a couple passed us going the opposite direction I could tell the woman was crying but she'd pull herself together until they got passed us, then I'd look back and she'd be throwing a fit and sometimes hitting the man lol. that hike really stressed out the girls on vacation haha. Haleakala crater is also a hard hike. 11-13 miles, first down, then up. But its surreal when you get into the dunes, it looks like Mars, then an hour or two later, you're on the coastal view again. its wild!

a lot of people really love Maui. Hawaii is so convenient for west coast people that we were there during a superbowl and basically everyone there was a seahawks fan so we stopped into a sports bar to watch. no wait, maui was 2013 playoffs game. when we walked in they asked "are you with the 49er's or the Seahawks? and they divided the bar that way lol!!

I wouldn't do Kauai again unless i had so much vacation and travel time and money that good weather didn't matter. Maui is kinda the same way. far better weather than Kauai but still not quite what I'm looking for. I really would love to see Waikiki again though. I think the country bumpkin in me loves to travel to cities. Waikiki isn't a large city by any stretch but the hustle and bustle and exploring shops is more my speed. Also, Pearl Harbor is or at least was, a very important experience. Definitely a tear jerker, that one hit me hard.

of those three places, Waikiki is the place I loved the most and most crave to go back to even though my only experience there was with the ex 24 years ago lol!

But Hawaii is F'ing expensive. It would cost us just as much money to spend a week in Hawaii in a cheap hotel or vrbo as we are spending for this bahamas trip. The food and gas is also expensive if you rent a car (i did not rent in waikiki, but did rent in Maui and Kauai). to put all that into perspective I took our 3 adult kids (well including my son who was 14 or 15 at the time) with my wife to a great all inclusive in puerto vallarta for like $3500. I don't think I could do that in hawaii for even double that.

Here's a pic of the inside of Haleakala (not mine). it really looks like you are hiking on Mars when you get in there.

yeah I'm thinking focusing most carbs around bench and squats might be good. The monday fasts have worked well this year, but I'm ready to not have to take 30hrs off of eating every week lol. I will likely go back to my previous setup where I usually hung out around 9-12% bf with breakfast, snack, lunch prepped and packed every sunday meticulously.

brother, my all time favorite vacation in the world would be the platinum suite here:

https://www.privilegehotels.com/

you just show up and get catered on. you can walk through all the small blocks in the surrounding neighborhood for food, drinks, trinkets, chill on the beach, go boating, go spearfishing, rent a golf cart and tour the whole island. catch a sunrise on one side and a sunset on the other. Order room service and tell them to bring it upstairs to your private pool. but prices have doubled, flights have doubled, and politics in Mexico are no good right now. in all the many visits i've had to Mexico, I gotta say, the crime is finally getting to me.

I think you’re going to have an absolute blast. Remember that although those other couples won’t all have the same backgrounds, hobbies or political views, consider they all agreed to come try this trip - just like you! They want to have fun, relax, be by the water & make the most of their vacation.

I was thinking exactly what Jim said. Perfect time to enter a heavier training focus while keeping things at slight deficit.
