Most of the older guys I know that go on cycles do it to basically get their hormone levels back to where they were when they were your age. Unless your trying to get freakishly huge I would definetely advise not messing with them.
Oh yeah forgot to mention that doing something like watching a movie you've seen a bunch of times where your mind is basically doing nothing is the easiest way to fall asleep if your having troubles.
Just my 2 cents.. I've tried experimenting with different amounts of sleep and waking up at different times and I've found that if I just let myself sleep until I naturally wake up that it works best.
