I am going to enter a tournament in Houston

Rodja

Board Sponsor
I talked to a promoter that is based out of Conroe, TX, which is a suburb of Houston, and he is going to hold a 16 man tournament that will be held PRIDE style. The first round is on All Hollow's Eve and the next rounds will be abut a month after that date. This is a major opportunity both professionally and financially to make a name for myself and to try to maybe secure a sponsorship or three. I am going to be fighting at 170 and am about 4 weeks out conditioning wise right now. I want to try to get on a card around Labor Day to get some more experience and $$.

Damn you must be good. How long you been training? What belt you got in BJJ?

I train No-Gi, so I don't have a belt, but I have been told by a few of my training partners that I am starting to approach a purple belt status and I haven't even been training a year yet. General rule of thumb is if you can tap a certain belt of your size 25% of the time, then you are at that level. When it starts to approach 50%, you are generally starting to move up to the next level.

E.G. I tap most of the purple belts at about a 25% rate, which makes me almost a purple belt level.

That's great. I know you were planning to go down to 55, but I guess you can't pass up this opportunity. Will all the fights take place in the Houston area? Where do you live? Are you planning to get any additional help for this tournament?

:head:

Awesome, Rodja. Sounds like a great opportunity. I was starting to think you had abandoned us in the MMA forum. Welcome back, bro.

I will probably train with Travis Tooke, Yves Edwards BJJ trainer, while I am in Houston for a little bit. Travis has some sick BJJ; he actually went to Brazil for a year and got his black belt while he was there. I live about 2 hours away from there so the trip will not be a problem. I still plan at someday going to 155, but that requires much more $$ than I have at the moment. I am hoping to use this as a springboard to bigger and better offers in TX, the US, and maybe beyond.

Geez, I've been training for like 2 1/2 and I still suck lol. Then again, I don't train everyday, and only train BJJ. GI/NO GI.

I usually only grapple 3x/week with technique 2x/wk. I put more of an emphasis on conditioning and strength as I draw closer to the fights.

man i was in houston last weekend... would have been nice to meet you a roll. Im the same as you , never been belted but I plow through blues and give pruples a tough time.

congrats bro, and good luck!!

BJJ is something I've always wanted to get into, but I haven't yet.

I had talked to a local gym about it and had all the info/was ready to start until I broke my ankle ~5 weeks ago :aargh:

Best of luck Rodja, look forward to hearing about the results.

Question: What exactly does Pride style tournament mean? Win and go on or is there more to it than that?

Win and go and it is held over several events instead of a one-night endurathon a la early UFC.
