Cissus for my dog??

So i dont know if anybody will know the answer to this, but it seems like a great idea to me. We have this white lab that is 14 years old...he's an old man for sure. He's had really bad hip problems for quite awhile now...arthritis and some kind of muscle degenerative disease. So i was thinking that cissus might be of some help to him. He's been on something called cosiquin and we've tried glucosimine type things that MIGHT have helped some, but not much. Im not looking for a miracle cure or anything...just want to see if the cissus could help him out and make whatever time he has left better. So do you think it might help and at what dose....he's prolly about 60lbs??? I realize you guys arent vets or anything, just lookin for some input. I really appreciate any help you might be able to give...thanks alot!
 
Some of the original Cissus Q. studies were on dogs, so yeah, I think it would be perfect for man's best friend!
 
cool man, what do you think on dosing? Would def be cheaper to get the bulk cissus, but im not sure on getting it in him...i guess wrapped up in some kind of food should work. But any ideas on the proper dose??
 
Ooh, now that would be hard. I'll try and dig up the one study I know for sure was done on the ulnas of dog's. I would say at least half the dosage.
 
So, I have no idea what the correct answer for you may be but I just wanted to shout you out for taking the time to make your dog's life better. You're a good man.
 
Hey thnx mullet for trying to find some info for me. If im not mistaken there isnt much of a toxicity issue with cissus, but id i def dont want to hurt him when im trying to help.

Bionic...thnx for the kind words bro. But its no big thing...nothing i wouldnt do for anybody else in my family! I mean he's been around for half my life now...he's an old man for sure, a happy old man for the most part, but id love to see him get around easier.
 
I have a black lab that's nearing his 8th birthday and I was thinking about buying some bulk cissus for him as well. I wanted to ask but feared getting chewed out.

I hope that your dog lives happy and pain free for the remainder of his time on earth. I've only had a dog for nearly 8 years and I would break into tears if anything happened to him. These bad boys are notorious for hip problems eh
 
You guys should be more careful what you feed your dogs. I understand your trying to help but I wouldn't take chances with your best friends health!. Ask your vet!.
 
Browndustin...yeah labs are def known for their bad hips. He's had this problem for several years now, its just gotten really bad over the last couple of months. And being 14 id pretty much consider him ancient for a lab, so like i said i dont expect miracles...would just love to see him get some mobility back and maybe a little muscle in the hip region. And above all else i know he's in pain and it would be great to reduce that for him. Atleast that way he could go out strong, instead of all lame and gimped up. As far as breaking into tears i know exactly what you mean. Just as an example old yeller made me cry more than any movie ever! lol Might be a little sick and twisted but animals dying usually hits me harder than people. Atleast as far as hollywood goes...i can relate to it better.

T-Bone...i hear what you are saying, but at the same time i dont agree. Thats kind of like saying ask your doctor before you make additions to your supplement program. Docs just dont always know best unfortunately, and im guessing neither do vets. Infact i would bet dollars to donuts she has never heard of cissus. But after saying all that, i do agree too. Which is why i started my inquiry here in the USP forum...if anybody knew of testing or anything like that it would be these guys. And i figured it would be a good start before looking anywhere else.

Well I bet the vet has never heard of it either. If your vet is open minded though, you could find all the information you could online, clinical studies and such on cissus and print them out, have your vet look it over and get back to you. I just really like animals and don't want to see anything bad happen to them. I wish I could have a dog but I live in an apartment so I have a chinchilla instead.
 
Well one things is for sure, it would be a huge market if Jacob could break into it. People spend lots of money on there pets. My wife owns a Ranch and a dog grooming bizz, these people buy supps from her all the time. Dropping a Hundred bucks for supps is nothing for them. I get more magazines for animals supps then I do for me.
 
Yeah, thats true no doubt! The glucosamine product was way over priced compared to the pretty much exact same thing you could get for humans. And if it works for bad hips and degenerative muscle disease there are a TON of dogs out there that have this problem, and not just old dogs...alot of breeds are just genetical prone to have this. I was also thinking about celedrin but have seen way less reviews as far as effectiveness. Almost every review ive seen on cissus has been positive, i guess the same is true of celedrin but ive seen hundreds for cissus but only a few for celedrin. But these were for humans of coarse and not dogs...but unless i can find a definite no go for canines i think im going to give it a shot.
 
Keep us updated on how well it works. I've been giving my dog glucosamine/chondroitin for his joints, and, knowing how it's very hit or miss (mostly miss) for humans, I've been considering Cissuss for my dog as well.
 
People give their dogs all sorts of drugs and medicine. Hell, we give my dog fish oils and whatnot and I'm contemplating just buying some oils in the health shop because they look way better than what we're buying from the vet.

IIRC, the few cissus studies out there were performed on dogs as mentioned earlier. I'm not going to jump into it, but perhaps I'll ask my vet. Thank goodness my dog appears to be in relatively good health. He still acts like a puppy but it's sad to see him hop up the stairs a little slower and whatnot. Eek.
