Yes. ISIS (Islamic State / ISIL / Daesh) and its affiliates or inspired supporters have carried out or claimed attacks against Israel.
Cross-border attacks from Sinai:
The main direct threat has come from the ISIS affiliate in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula (Wilayat Sinai / Islamic State – Sinai Province, formerly Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014). It has claimed multiple rocket attacks on southern Israel:
- February 2017: Rockets fired toward Eilat (several intercepted by Iron Dome; no casualties or major damage reported). The group explicitly claimed responsibility.
- Other incidents in 2015 and 2017 (including toward the Eshkol region), plus earlier rocket fire and sabotage of the Egypt-Israel gas pipeline by the group or its predecessor.
The predecessor group was also linked to the deadly August 2011 cross-border attack near Eilat that killed eight Israelis.
Attacks inside Israel:
There have been fatal attacks by individuals or small cells who pledged allegiance to ISIS, were inspired by it, or for which the group claimed credit:
- 2016 Tel Aviv attacks: A shooting on Dizengoff Street (2 killed) by an Arab Israeli inspired by ISIS, and a shooting at Sarona Market (4 killed) by IS-inspired Palestinians.
- June 2017 Jerusalem attack near Damascus Gate (one border policewoman killed). ISIS claimed it via its Amaq agency as its first claimed attack inside Israel (Israeli authorities generally described the perpetrators as a local Palestinian cell; Hamas also claimed involvement).
- March 2022 Hadera shooting (2 killed) by two Arab Israelis from Umm al-Fahm who recorded a pledge of allegiance to ISIS beforehand; ISIS claimed responsibility. A related Beersheba attack was also linked in claims.
Additional context
- Occasional border incidents from the Syrian side (e.g., 2016 firing on an IDF patrol in the Golan by an ISIS-affiliated group).
- Numerous foiled plots by Israeli citizens (mostly Arab Israelis) inspired by or in contact with ISIS, including planned car bombings and other attacks.
- ISIS propaganda has repeatedly called for attacks on Israel and Jews, though the group historically prioritized fighting “apostate” Arab regimes and Western targets over direct large-scale operations against Israel.
In short, ISIS through its Sinai affiliate, inspired actors, and claimants have attacked Israeli territory and civilians. Israeli security services have disrupted many related plots, and Israel has also conducted strikes against ISIS-linked targets in Syria. Conspiracy claims that ISIS “never attacks Israel” are contradicted by these documented incidents.
