New Study saying that 90% of ALCAR metabolize to TMAO?

I wouldn't be overly concerned with this, as L-Carnitine and its different forms are used by so many people.

There have been dozens of studies, probably hundreds, on Acetyl-L-Carnitine, showing no side effects.

XPG makes an L-Carnitine Gel for people that don't want to use it orally and don't want to inject, but I use Acetyl-L-Carnitine daily in Focus XT.

Yes you should be concerned. I'd get bloodwork if you've been taking it long term.
A guy on a nootropics discord just got bloodwork done and TMAO was off the charts even though he was taking PQQ and Aged garlic.

Bought a tub of bulk ALCAR a couple of weeks ago, considering throwing the tub away. Sucks, but good thing I bought on iHerb and the folks there actually refunded me when I raised the concern (how about that for customer service).

I'll clarify what I meant with saying "I wouldn't be worried about it" - I wasn't talking about TMAO.

I was talking about the effect of Acetyl L-Carnitine on TMAO, as in I don't think it alone is an issue.

I don't think that anyone should get freaked out over a study that compares the TMAO conversion of Acetyl L-Carnitine to regular L-Carnitine, when regular L-Carnitine is one of the most commonly used mass market supplements in the US and has been for decades. Examples:
  • A can of Ghost Energy has 1,000 mg. of L-Carnitine in it.
  • Liquid L-Carnitine, which I'm not a fan of, is one of the best selling fat loss supplements in the US.
Acetyl L-Carnitine is a great nootropic and can help with focus, memory, learning, etc.

Betaine Anhydrous (Trimethylglycine) - is great for supporting homocysteine levels, but can increase TMAO. Yet it's one of the most popular heart health ingredients on the market and in many of the best selling pre-workouts.

An individuals TMAO levels are important for their health, but I don't think a person should be scared to grab a Ghost energy bc in the big picture, that's going to have very little influence on things.

-------------------------------------------------------

The main thing that is going to increase TMAO levels for most people is their diet.

Almost everything in life has positives and negatives to it, including the way we train, if we do or don't train, the type of diet we eat, etc.

There are tons of things that can increase TMAO levels, including many things that can also have other positive health benefits to them. Here are a few examples:
  • Keto Diet - for all its potential benefits, can lead to higher levels of TMAO.
  • Fish - may increase TMAO, but has also been linked to increased heart health.
  • Chicken - may increase TMAO, but is a very good lean source of protein.
  • Red meat - high in protein and other nutrients, but is a major dietary cause of increased TMAO.
All these things may have positive health benefits, but they may also increase TMAO.

Thanks for this info. Have done a little digging and it seems this is a real risk that has been known for a while. Some advice out there to pair with Berberine and probiotics. Guys, do your own due diligence, particularly if you have a high risk for CVD, cholesterol etc!

Could be wrong but i’m pretty sure I remember reading that an allicin supplement taken with oral carnitine takes care of the bacteria responsible for the TMAO increase

I think it's individual. A poster referred to someone that was using ALCAR who had very high TMAO despite taking garlic, so I guess awareness, experimentation and monitoring are key. Some may wish to avoid all together. And yes, other things may increase TMAO but it's all about degrees and the risk/reward balance for each individual

Promise im not trying to be a smart ass, but taking garlic and an taking allicin extract are two separate things. The results could be very different

i believe raw garlic juice has a similar amelioratory effect to allicin. My key point is that it 'ameliorates', so there's still a potential residual risk depending on dosages of ALCAR taken and CVD risk factors. Main takeaway for me is avoid altogether or pair oral ALCAR or LCARNITINE with a TMAO inhibitor if desired
