I know exactly who you root for - you post a like every time Jigzz slams on conservatives - You have one thing right- none of these politicians give a **** about you or me (Repubs or Libs) What you fail to realize is that many of us (you call us MAGA's) know that as well- however, our gov't system is set up to either join one side or the other- I'll take the Republicans side all day every day and try to vote the trash republicans out of office- yes Republicans make tons of mistakes and do wrong but at the end of the day they are better than any Liberal, Progressive pig out there- It's easier to become wealthy and have more freedoms under Republicans these days than under Liberals.... those are the facts

Remember during covid when the country shut down and we found out the hard way that NOTHING is really made in America anymore??? We had no PPE of our own, no medicines, no computer chips, not even toilet paper.....

Tarrifs are a threat gimmick to cooerce businesses into doing their manufacturing HERE again. Important for our survival, especially in the event of a world war.

If car manufacturing was exported, we would not be able to make armored vehicles here in America in an emergency like war. Without computer chips, our modern world would shut down fast if China takes Taiwan (90% of the world's chips) for example.

This is deadly serious business and I think Trump is thinking way ahead of the curve here. Tarrifs will initially suck... but if they bring real manufacturing back to America, it will be worth it.

Im rooting for it to work even though I think there is a case to oppose tariffs putting other factors into blame as to why so much industry has moved overseas which can be put on punishing success (income taxes,) socialist policies (weight of SS, health care and medicare on businisses,) minimum wage laws, regulations harassing our businesses. So I dont mean to come across as having TDS especially if he has a true genuine plan to replace income tax with tariffs but the debate must go continue on how to move forward, and after all I have a Libertarian bias and always morally oppose exchanging freedoms and liberties of the American people in exchange for the illusion of security.
 
Cutting spending is the biggest thing. And term limits!

Pre-covid the annual federal budget was $4.5 trillion. It ballooned to $6.5 trillion during the peak covid bailouts... but with covid long behind us the annual budget NEVER stopped spending at covid levels!!!!

The problem isn't Trump tax cuts (the tax income still went up every year thereafter).... ITS THE SPENDING!!

And thinking tarrifs can replace taxes is a bit of a fantasy. We would need 300% tarrifs on every single import to even come close to the revenue we need.

Trump sure had one of the worse fiscally irresponsible years on Presidential history and handed to torch over which is why I argue to never ever under any circumstances allow government to pull that off. Total crime scene and I can never forgive him for going along with that and bragging about it. I still will root for our success but can’t image the crap he may pull off if we have another fabricated crisis like that again or even worse a real crisis.

To be fair.... no one was more vocal and opposed to the national covid shutdown than Trump. But the rest of government steamrolled him and he let Fauci have too much influence in the process. And Dem Governors were shutting down their states in a way the President couldn't stop (10th amendment states rights), and the majority of congress was against him.

Still, I like to think Trump could have always done more to oppose covid mandates.... but he wasn't the bad guy in this one. Heck, he shut down flights from China right away (and they crucified him for it as a xenophobe)!!

I would argue maybe perhaps he was the lesser of evils, but still terrible. He signed off on trillions of dollars in spending, bailouts, even tapped FEMA funds later on to cover socialist unemployment checks, he empowered the Democrats....if anyone was vocal during that time and also authentic it was the Libertarians who said no, Thomas Massie did not sign off on all that spending and Trump ATTACKED him, so that showed alot right there. Trump with his Operation Warp Speed led to all that government enforced science on human beings to bypass further testing which was research years away to prove efficacy and safety, making pharma more powerful and rich than they have ever been with the intermingling of govenrment and health.....I can continue to rant but whatever I can only hope we get the US on a better economic path moving forward I really have little power right now.

I'm in manufacturing, and have been for 25 years. The only good economy I've ever seen was Trumps first term, and I didn't realize it until then. I was used to shitty economies. I'm a student of economics, Adam Smiths invisible hand, etc. but I'm also in favor of protecting industries that are relevant to national defense such as manufacturing and farming.

The tariffs didn't create heightened expenses for people during the first Trump run. They did however increase "onshoring", businesses grew and wages went up. I'm still a firm believer that wage growth will outpace inflation.

There are two ways to beat inflation. Kill demand (the Biden admin approach) or increase wealth past inflation, and supply. The Trump approach. I'm in favor of the second one, personally.

I hate inflation in general, i wish a dollar was worth a dollar. But I'd rather have $6 gas cause the average person is making double the income they did last year rather than $4 gas and everyone making half with unemployment and interest rates high.

@BamBam54 I forgot to mention, what tariffs did create was paperwork nightmares. most tariffs come through AFTER you've received product if you're in manufacturing so there would be thousands of dollars in tariffs that you needed to account for. Ideally those get passed on to your end user/customer but a lot of times it created havoc in the beginning and unhappy customers wanting to know why they didn't know about it before hand. that was because a lot of large manufacturers create the same identical products in various countries like China and Mexico, Vietnam, etc and you wouldn't know where yours was coming from until it arrived with a lotcode.

This year, we have been proactive with hindsight being 20/20 to remind customers that we won't always know where Tariffs apply until product arrives.

Luckily as a manufacturer, if I sell a product for say $100, it may have $5-10 in Chinese parts in it. so the tariff is not 25% of the $100 item I sell (or $25). it would be 25% of the chinese component so say, $5. Meaning the $100 item might only go up to like $101 or $102. etc.

yes its genius and highlights a very fair approach to those countries in how they can quickly eliminate the tariffs, its not just a matter of tit for tat, it's a matter of mutual contributions to each others economies. 20 years ago I saw democrats work hard to establish essentially the same thing. Me being in WA, I remember when our governors used to work very hard to establish trade deals with Japan and China to sell our agricultural products overseas. We dont' do that anymore.

These countries can elminate their tariffs with reciprocal trade.
 
Essentially the United States is the fuel for every other developing nation's industrial revolution and beyond. But when those countries develop into a superpower like China, the suckling of the American teet doesn't end. Large super powers / developed nations should have reciprocal partnerships. America has been the beaten spouse in the relationship for a long time. and more recently, the economy that we feed into China with this deficit has afforded China the finances to buy up American assets and land.
 
We had a small paint job quoted for the upper eaves of our house for 2 reasons

a. it's very high and I don't need to risk the injury
b. it will require some real prep work with peeling paint on the facia

but these days I struggle with the tax portion. There is a real issue here that needs to be corrected. For me to hire these guys, share my income (which has already been taxed) with them so they can earn an income and pay their bills, I have to pay the state of Washington $109.
