curious .. i used to alot back in the days when it was popular .. looks like they are making a return.

made an investment in kobe rookie card when he passed away.

Curious if others have some good rookie cards ( basketball, football )

A friend of mine has a bunch of different rookie Michael Jordan cards! He said those will pay for his kids college tuition.

I think my mom did the same thing when I joined the Army. I need to ask her though because I had thousands of baseball and football cards...

I had a sh1t ton of NHL/hockey cards back in the day. They may still be somewhere at my moms 🤔

go get them .. trade for supplements lol

Yes. Growing up in the 90's and early 00's I used to collect a ton. It was my main hobby. Now it's supplements lol

But I have A LOT of sports cards. Used to go to card shows all the time.

Back in 2000, I purchased a Tom Brady Fleer autographed rookie card for $10. It now sells for $1,000's. Just one of the many cards I have probably worth a lot that I spend next to nothing on.

My funds were limited at the time. I would get $5/week allowance from my parents. BUT I made it count with all the cards I used to buy. I'd scour the $1/$5 bins at shows and mostly collect like that.

I did my research and followed sports avidly. I knew all the young prospects coming out.

Eventually I got older and lost interest. Ironically, the card industry seemed to die around this time as well.

There were just too many brands of cards and they were getting too expensive to purchase. eBay changed the game A LOT. Card shows seemed to stop and card stores seemed to close.

While I still follow the NFL, I lost total interest in following the NBA and MLB.

yup same lost interest as getting older but now seems like they are trending again

Just found out my mom has ALL my old baseball and football cards still from 30 years ago. I'm be going through those looking for that diamond in the rough!

Yeah I stopped collecting before the interwebs became really a thing. I bet that did change things a lot. I grew up in a smaller town and remember how exciting it was to go to a bigger city that had some of those card stores. I could've spent hours going through all the different cards at display and I showed some of the more special cards I've collected to the card shop owners, asking their opinions about them and all that. Allways left with at least one pack of new cards and going through them on a bussride back home. Man this thread brought up some memories, lol

Yeah i was the same ..i was a huge card addcit too, we only had one store and loved going there and it was right next to blockbuster ..so yeah spent most of days there and got in alot of trouble for not letting parents know where i was

web/phones/media changed everything, i still feel our old generation ( if you are around 38-45years old) we all did exact same stuff outside and was best times .. now kids just sit inside with a cell phone and it really irritates me .. my son is only 2 years old and i would go crazy if thats all he wants to do and not be active in sports/gym

I'm only 33, but pretty close. I agree with a lot of what you say here. I would only want to make a small 'separation' on the issue with the 'kids these days' and their activities. Only because I think that's what the older generation have and will allways say/think about the youth and what they're doing. I mean my initial thought about all this tech and smart phones on every child and social media is that it does not look like a good thing, but at the same time I'm afraid it's just the old hack in me thinking so 😄

I agree and think that all sports are really a great thing for kids and people to have in their life and grow up doing. It teaches so many things that you would not immediately think/realise. All the; effort equals success, pushing through fatigue, mental strenght, finding solutions to tacle obtacles, what to do or not to do today to be in good shape to perform tomorrow etc. etc. Team sports a little bit more on the social and group skills and individual sports maybe more of the dedication and attention to details. Anyway yeah, if I'll have kids some day, I'll definitely be encouraging them to enjoy some form of sport in their youth.

i bet that bob gibson was worth a pretty penny....i had tom seavers topps rookie card along with joe nammath and the entire big red machine.

good for you for hanging on to those cards!!!!

I finally got my cards from my mom. I haven't looked through these in over 20 years. Everything from baseball, football, a few hockey and basketball to Marvel lol.

How do I figure out the value of these? Is there a good site? I have a Michael Jordan MVP card that goes from $1 to $2k and I can't tell the difference.

Edit: I also have a few signed baseballs by Mickey Mantle, Don Larsen and one that has several Phillies including John Kruk.

Edit 2: I should also say I have thousands of cards. This is going to be one helluva project to sort out lol.

Update: I've been looking up hundreds of my cards and everything I thought would've been worth something isn't. I'm have to go back through them and look for error cards since that seems to be the most valuable as crazy as it is. Lame.

Here's a few that should've been worth something but I guess are too rough around the edges now. So frustrating. FTR, I know they aren't rookie cards but that's what I had 30 years ago.

The 2 on the bottom are some 'hologram' cards, where the pic moves, lol.

That Mats Sundin card is interesting (Maple leafs), as it's completely of metal. Hard to keep fully flat, lol.

Then there's a case full for more.

i cheer for pengs bc of sid the kid .. my ex and kid is in calgary ..so always cheer for them as well

Yeah, I don't watch NHL too much these days myself either. Might watch a game here or there. As a kid I was more in to it and that was when I was collecting those cards.

The last years it's been MMA and NBA pretty much for me.

Btw, a funny thing watching hockey live; if you're close to the ice, you can hear and feel the game way different, but from the upper seats, seeing the plays happen and following the game is much easier and more clear. Whereas for something like basketball, the closer - the better, always.

I bet the atmosphere was great in Montreal and Calgary. Those Canucks love their hockey, lol.

Still have a bunch of NHL cards. I had a giant binder of MLB with some bangers from when I was a kid but I believe it was stolen or lost somewhere to this world
