Astaxanthin looks like a very interesting compound but as it’s an anti-inflammatory antioxidant that stays in your body for a long time I’m a bit concerned that supplementing with it daily couldn’t lead to reduced gains.

What are your thoughts?

I'm 45 years old and a take it daily and I notice a difference in my joints But it would be good to know if it was counterproductive for building muscle

I don’t understand why you think an anti inflammatory would reduce muscle gains. I keep seeing this thrown around and it’s complete and utter bullshit. Chronic Inflammation is the main culprit behind so many diseases and there are even anti inflammatories like curcumin that are anti catabolic. Astaxanthin from what I’ve read is a fantastic supplement for overall health.

Also there’s a study on krill oil activating Mtor signaling. The reason for this is that krill oil contains astaxanthin.

The big issue, as far as I can tell, is that everyone just lumps everything together. Inflammation contributes to muscle growth, therefore anything and everything even remotely anti-inflammatory or antioxidative must be counterproductive. Realistically, in theory at least, only certain types would negatively impact gains. COX-2 inhibitors decrease prostaglandin synthesis, which is a contributing factor to muscle growth. In practice, I doubt a lot of this would be noticeable.

I wonder about it because I’ve read studies which found that taking allicin and resveratrol pre-workout dampened gains in the groups that took them pre-workout and they said that it’s due to their anti-inflammatory effects

No-one’s disputing that chronic inflammation causes a lot of diseases or that anti-inflammatories are generally good for your health. This is very specifically asking if astaxanthin would dampen your gains.

Compounds can have positive effects through certain pathways whilst also having negative effects through other pathways. Take onion extract for example

Onion extract has been shown to increase testosterone levels but at the same time the ficetin in it dampens mTor. So what’s the net result? Well that would depend on timing. Taking it pre-workout would provide a negative net affect whilst taking it before bed would have a positive net effect

Dosing around workouts could put a small damper on gains in theory because inflammation is part of the growth process but who knows how much it matters
