Jillian Michaels Urges Fans to Stay Away From the Keto Diet!

""The reason that keto has been getting so much attention is because it helps significantly to manage your insulin levels. Very high insulin, very bad thing," she explained. Because of this, keto works well for people who struggle with high insulin levels, especially those with polycystic ovary syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and infertility, but it's not appropriate for most people, she said. "If you’re not eating a bunch of processed carbs and processed sugar and you’re not eating too much food in general, you won’t have insulin levels that are going through the roof,” she explained."

"Her advice? The same as it's always been: "Just work out, eat clean, and don't overeat," she emphasized. "I promise you: Balanced diet—it's that simple."

Is she correct?

As someone who has been doing it for over a year. It is not a fad. Heading to work, so I cannot explain a lot now, but it is very versatile as one can do it without any carbs, or incorporate various types of carb cycling while retaining the value of using fat as the main fuel source. Will touch on it later.

I’ve been doing keto (or more accurately a modified Atkins diet, basically a bit more protein) on and off for 2 years. It’s great for cutting for me. Haven’t tried bulking on it, but for me it’s a tool to be used when appropriate just like carb cycling, carb backloading, iso-caloric, etc.

I've heard this a lot but I wish your doctor would have included the inflammation marker in your blood test. Cholesterol could be high yet inflammation very low.

I actually will be getting bloods done at the end of the month. I will be sure to ask for that.

Many people experienced higher levels of cholesterol until full keto adapted but their inflammation markers plummet..which is the real factor in heart disease.

What other inflammation markers other than CRP should be looked at? My doctor says mine was great. But if there’s more to look at, I’d like to know.

Good for bulking, and having glycogen stores in the muscle always full. Now I have a carb meal for dinner more occasionally rather than often. (Not sure how doing it daily indefinitely will effect health and blood test scores over time). It is recommended to have simple/high glycemic carbs when reloading glycogen because you do not want to be running energy wise off of carb macros. It's a good way to enjoy keto, being able to eat your high fat/protein foods, but then splurge occasionally on chinese, italian, cake, ice cream, pizza, etc..

ESR, CRP and PV with CRP being the main one. If your CRP is good, the other most likely are.

How often do you refeed to maintain glycogen fullness while keto? Are you able to maintain the great keto-adapted feel as well? I’m doing carbs/cheat once a month right now, and am as flat as could be lol, but really trying to maximize my cut.

You can refeed a few hour post any intense workout. So any day that I lifted, for dinner i had whatever carb meal i wanted, being that it was high glycemic. You would be safe to consume around up to 300g any might post workout; as long as your not slacking in the gym. You will retain the fluid blood sugar energy levels.

I see. That’s arguably not a ketogenic diet though. Do you measure blood ketones doing that (obviously not around the carb intake, but 12 hours later or whatever)?

It really depends on you and your genetics. Some people can do it every day...some people simply can't do it without major bloating and changes overnight....and not for the best.

It is a variation of a ketogenic diet because only around the refeed is when you will not produce ketones. I tested my ketones for days/weeks/months, blood test wise, and I was in ketosis every day.

Why it is best for someone to go strictly ketogenic for a long period of time before playing with carb cycling. Some people have a lot of damage to repair regarding their pancreas and liver. And I stress, you better deplete your glycogen in the gym; if it is not intense, dont attempt to carb cycle.

The longer you are in, the harder is to knock you out. Dom D’Agostino can take in 80-100g of carbs daily and never come out.

Ketogenic=genesis of ketosis. Depending on ones activity level, a diet can be ketogenic even with carbs, but it depends on what your activities are and when you eat as well. I am always back in ketosis a day after carb ups. IMO, its when people start restricting things like vegetavles cuz they have carbs where it becomes unhealthy. Plus, noones ever gotten fat because broccoli, cabbage and asparagus.

If one ISNT fat adapted, they need to do strict keto to fat adapt. After ones body can use fat efficiently, it isnt necessary to ALWAYS be in ketosis. I think about things as the percentage of time Im in ketosis. People lose the ability to burn fat cuz they eat carbs all day and all week and all their life. Thats messes up the body, but if your adapted its not necessary. There are different levels of ketosis and shredded people (jillian michaels) whove never needed a ketogenic diet. You think jillians never been in ketosis? She has, shes just never needed an exteme diet to reach it as shes good at moderation. Im more an all or nothing person, so keto and fasting with carb loads has allowed me to learn how to regulate my physique despite my all or nothing nature. But i wouldnt suggest that jillian Michaels needs keto, or that keto folks need to do it her way.

So i just read the actual blog that jillian wrote, and shes pretty right on target. She gives all the credit to how it helps manage insulin and corrects a ton of what the american diet ruins. Her critisisms about how it will deprive one of micronutrients that are only found in fruits, legumes is correct, especially when one considers long term keto. Im very impressed with jillians knowledge and how she conveyed it. Seems to me a lot of folks just got triggered.

Not everyone on keto ignores all fruits. There are plenty of good rebuttals against her. I watched her video about her explaining keto, and my take away is she only has surface understanding.

Also, Jillian promotes eating 5 to 6 times a day, and has a new book promoting this. This is a PR stunt to put her and her book on the scene for sales. Nobody fat adapted would eat 6 meals a day. Our satiety is high. Our metabolism is great. We value autophagy (something you wont be in eating 6 meals a day). Her dietary advice relies on an abundance of anti oxidants because of the amount of oxidative stress she is constantly putting on her body. She is the opposite of a longevity dietart instruction.

I agree, but a lot of people are crazy restrictive when they do keto and think its just about meat cheese and butter. Ive had people.tell me i eat too much broccoli to be ketogenic and it makes me laugh. But i agree, keto can be more.moderate than some think.

Its my understanding that without carb refeeds leptin will het low, especially as one leans out. I also believe a diet diverse in plant material is a good thing amd that differemt gryits and vegetables all have micronutrients that are different, so i want em all.

This is absolutely ridiculous - “If you’re not eating a bunch of processed carbs and sugar and you’re not eating too much food in genereral...” seriously? The American diet is just that! Processed foods, sugar and carbs. Unless you are a competitive body builder or someone who watches everything they eat, you probably eat a lot of bad stuff too. I am in my 50’s and look the best I ever have after having done the Keto diet (lifestyle change). All my health markers are better, I’ve lost 33 pounds in a little over 3 months and feel fantastic. All this from eating under 50 carbs a day, eliminating sugar and increasing my fat intake dramatically. I don’t like when people who don’t seem to know what they’re talking about trash things they don’t know about. Seems to be the norm nowadays. If your diet is on point, you are already doing well, the fact is most people aren’t, and the obesity and health markers support my position. Do your research. Dr. Berg on YouTube is phenomenal at explaining why a Ketogenic diet is transformational and sustainable. I know. I’ve done it and much healthier. There are hundreds of success stories on there as well. Keto, I believe, it the easiest way to lose, and maintain weight loss for improved health.

I've seen Dr. Berg and he does offer a lot of information that is piggybacked by what others do. I often feel he was a bit late to the party and now is taking advantage of the keto craze on Youtube. I don't blame him, but others such as Dr. D'Agonstino paved the way for the "youtube experts" to really thrive. He often does take complex issues and simplifies them with his whiteboard which is a great marketing tool....and naturally he branched off into his own line of supps. Nothing wrong with this, but if you really want to get into the real info other sources are more pure in nature IMO. Even his newest video has some statement that really get to me..as in "cancer survives off sugar". No, some do...and others have nothing to do with glucose levels.

...but as for an overall intro to keto, he's fine.

“Just workout, eat clean and don’t overeat.” That statement is true for dieting. It really is that simple. I think there are some diets that work well better for some people. I’ve done a bunch of diets. Been doing keto for the past two months. I think that it’s really good at keeping your appetite at bay. To me that is the magic of it. Does burning ketones for fuel help, who knows. But I lose fat effectively doing keto (really palumbo style), carb cycling or targeted keto dieting. In general I think carbs around training is advantageous and cutting carbs on non training days can really help with maintaining insulin sensitivity. But no matter what diet you are doing.... it will always be calories in v calories out.

Yeah this.

I hate the expression keto diet, it’s not actually a thing. Being in a state of ketosis is. Fundamentally whether it is beneficial comes down to how metabolically flexible one is, for some people the use of fasting plus keto to force an improvement in metabolic flexibility will be optimal, for others (with good metabolic flexibility) it will make little to no difference in fat loss (assuming the presence of a calorie deficit).

As ever with these things - there is no one ‘best’ diet or way. Far too many variables and individual aspects to consider

Studies out have confirmed that it's gut bacteria that act as the safety measure for cholesterol wreaking havoc on your cardiovascular system (youtube Rhonda Patrick she has a good vid with Joe Rogan on the subject). Also important for other things like cancer etc so this is an area of my health that I'm focusing on now.

You can do tests for gut bacteria to see what you have too much / not enough of, not sure what they are called but Google is your friend.

There are also tests you can do for checking your antioxidant levels as these can lead to a lot of health issues. Most scans can measure your visceral fat levels too.

Then there are the full on heart ECG's ? that can test your heart function for issues etc.

Fasting is known to greatly increase cholesterol levels but it's believed to be due to the processing of fat for energy, levels months after fasts showed a decrease once the fasting was over (you'd have to google the studies but they aren't hard to find).

Not quite the answers you were looking for but I hope adds some value in some way or another.

it's a fad. plenty of studies show that various body processes don't work or work less well under sustained ketosis. not to mention your blood being acidic is lame. also, also you can't eat too many cherries. and it's always the same story with keto nerds, they see an easy way to lose fat without doing the work of learning how to eat like a natural human. you rarely see someone who has been long-term keto, as with every other fad. eventually they lose all their gains and give up like the quitters they are. QED.

It undoubtedly gives results! I’ve seen multiple regulars that come into my bar that have lost 50+ pounds. It’s crazy these people aren’t even really working out. With that said they have gotten results but it’s not the best look. It’s very noticeable in there neck and shoulders. But they sacrificed a lot of muscle and look scrawny but at the same time they have a lot of loose skin. It would be a lot easier on gear. 😊

I don't think so. The health benefits to be had are in actual fact real, especially when combined with IF.
