Guess I’ve been living under a rock, but just came across a bunch of info that grilling meat (in particular red meat) is increasing my risk of cancer. I’ve been grilling all my food for all my meals for 15 years. How do y’all cook your steaks or chicken breasts? Or do you not even buy into that cancer scare?

Everything beside steak I fully cook. Steak though.... I eat it raw as funk man. 30 seconds on one side 30 seconds on the next... Grosses my wife out. Heard that small amounts of raw red meat is supposed to help you produce more red blood cells and improve kindey function. THIS IS JUST WHAT IVE HEARD THROUGH THE GRAPE VINE! HAVE NOT LOOKED INTO THIS OR EVEN AT LEAST GOOGLED IT! so if I'm wrong please inform me on my misinformation!

I’m guessing that has more to do with the iron content than anything else.

Yeah, everything can now. Who knows.

It has more to do with the heat at which the food is cooked at. The chemicals are more abundant in meats but it does not have to be meat, it can be any food. The worst are the blackened/charred parts which normally you would get more from grilling on high heat. Even toast from a toaster has been linked to contain cancer causing chemicals due to the high heat.

That being said, I have paid zero attention to this and eat about 8lbs of meat/poultry per week, all grilled.

Yeah the black part of Burt food is what I've always heard to be cancerous. But as well as you I've paid no attention to that.

I eat about that much too, or basically 1 pound of grilled meat per day. I don’t really grill on heat that high (i don’t think?), 350 degrees is as hot as my grill ever gets.

I grill everything that I can when its an option... when I travel during the weeks tho its mostly microwaving haha.... I'll get cancer either way so I don't even care.

Grill it all FTW!

GreenMachineX I wouldn't overthink it or stress about it. According to most studies, you can get cancer from virtually anything. If you enjoy eating your food on the grill, I say go for it. Life is too short to "protect" yourself from every cancer scare.

Chicken, in the crockpot. I can make a bunch at once, for the week, and it stays moist and tasty. It does not dry out. Red meat, I cook in the oven or I cook it on the stovetop then finish it in the oven.

Burned portions of meat creates AGE's (advanced glycolation end-products) which are cancerous. Long story short, don't BBQ everyday all day ;)

Instantpot for everything literally.
I bought a Mealthy Pot a couple weeks ago but have yet to use it. I hate figuring out new stuff when it’s just so easy to throw it on the grill, but I know once I get it down it’ll be even easier.

Boiling amid braising are great if you end up with dry meat, as those use liquid to cook. Try boiling in a beef stock/red wine mixture. We had that at a fondue place and it was delicious. Only needed about a minute and a half per chunk. Thanks!

How come? Don’t feel like figuring it out or it’s not any easier than anything else?

It seems easy enough. Just one of those things I feel like once you start you love it... my problem is it sits in our hall closet and I never think about using it

I buy bulk beef, season it and roast it on Sundays, then slice it up into servings during the week.

Arsenic levels in drinking water
Electronic devices
Diesel Fumes

Microwaving plastics or anything
Dryer sheets
Sugar
Lucky Charms
Candy Canes
Wax on Apples
Chopsticks
A/C in your Car

Based on what I've seen myself and heard others state their interpretation of the data, there is very little or no association with meat and cancer once fiber is accounted for in the studies (eg. No fiber + high meat = cancer association was still very small but present; add in fiber above some threshold and the cancer risk disappears almost entirely). Also, cooking method has a big part in this as OP mentioned. When meats (particularly red meats) are charred (most often when grilling) things called heterocyclic amines and polyaromatic hydrocarbons are formed. These are compounds that have demonstrated to have clear carcinogenic risks. Baking or boiling chicken breasts is probably the safest way to avoid this altogether, but if you want to live on the wild side and grill some steak every once in a while ( ) just cut off the portions that get to be overly charred/burnt.

Most often is just in a skillet on the stove or if it’s chicken quarters, baked in the oven. Always crispy in its own fats.

Everything causes cancer according to California. For example, California’s Prop 65 limits are insane. Take lead for example. They have a 50 MICROGRAM per day limit, which is much lower than even the FDA’s daily limit which accounts for women who may not know they’re pregnant. This DAILY lead limit is exceeded by eating one large sweet potato, and literally nothing else all day, including drinking no water, which, by the way, just drinking a normal amount of water that is below (under) the EPA’s action level, can also put you over Prop 65’s daily limit for lead.

This forum contains ingredients known in the state of California to cause cancer.
