Sorry to resurrect an old thread but that bit about tearing biceps has me scared.

These guys were all buff and they got the tear without any warning at all.

How does an average guy trying to build muscle avoid that risk? I'm especially worried because I'm starting to reach heavier weights (nothing close to what those monsters were doing, of course, but heavy for me) and I REALLY don't want to tear anything. But I really want to stop looking so disgusting!

I was actually thinking about this yesterday.

best way and to be 100% sure this wont happen- dont lift

second best way, make sure you are using correct form and lifting within your means. some guys i see are doing 60 lb db one incline curls and they couldnt curl 120 with a straight bar in proper form.

anytime you try a new technique, you should do the motion several times with no wgt. get the feel of what the muscle is doing, get your stance and body position down and then start off with a much lighter wgt for several reps.

guys pull the bicep doing dead lifts just as much as bicep curls.

guys take to much vitamin F and H and that leads to problems-

2nd this! If something doesn't feel right stop it.
I tore mine doing way too heavy and way too many deads. I was younger and stupid!
Also I was given some advice about 22 years ago to stretch the muscle group right after you work it, while it is warm. Never had even a muscle strain since!
Just wish I would have done a little rotator work 15 years ago. I knew to just never did it. Live and learn brothers!
