Jswain's training log for powerlifting

I pulled the insole out of a pair of converse and use those.

Like Jim said: chucks. The answer for the best economy flat shoe that has and will never change. You know this. $45 and I've been using the same pair the last 3+ years probably 300x a year every time I train. As in, I've probably got a thousand uses out of them for $45.

I figured I'd get a lot of chuck answers, i just wanted to feel it out and see if there was anything else. You can't beat that cost/use ratio at all.

Btw how the f are you improving so much so fast?!? You are making crazy progress on this project. You owe Mike a sammich!

I know, it's insane. Like i said before, i feel like I'm making noob gains again. I owe him one of those 6 foot party subs at this point. The combo of the weight i gained and this project has treated me ridiculously well.

Agreed, it's pretty nuts. Running on all cylinders right now.

Thanks Cap. Full steam ahead.

Chucks here, too.

Nice BP Pr Jared.

Thanks reg. Glad to see ya back in the gym picking heavy things up off the floor again brother.

Reebok crossfit lite tr. screw chucks. Will never buy again. Esp now that these can be found for around the same place for the not so popular colors. Wider foot, better grip on the floor, and better durability. Everyone I know who tried them after me love them over chucks.

Also awesome progress, keep it up!

This would be my choice as well. I own some low tops. Shop around for colors, but you can find them super cheap (I got my all blacks for 45).

I actually have some of the reebok xfit low tops. Those were my lifting shoes before i got the sabos. I like to squat in high tops, but i think ive seen some black high tops before. I think im likely going to go that route since it's apparently similar price wise.

Edit: like the ones lou just said :)

I have the high top black on blacks myself. They are out there.

Those are the ones ill be looking for most likely. Not completely writing chucks off yet tho. I did like the way my old ones fit though so i may just go with the reeboks cuz i know i like em.

Idk about durability - guy here is on his 3rd pair in a year. To be fair, one pair was his fault as he tore the side on a door corner, but 2 pairs in a year of training is excessive even. And he's not the only story I've heard of them falling apart.

I didn't realize they were getting so cheap though, so that's a big plus

damn it. That's the one thing I want to avoid. This will be my 3rd pair of sabos in the last 12 months roughly. I really just want the shoe that's going to last the longest as long as they're comparable otherwise.

I've had the same pair for about 2-3 years, still in great shape. I was going through a pair of chucks every 8-10 months before and completely blowing out the sides. My foot even shot through the side on a sumo pull once lol

So basically what im getting is it can be hit or miss with either one lol

Just for giggles, what was your total before and what's a ballpark on your current total?

Ive been thinking about this honesty. My total from my last meet was 1429. Just from my e1rms from my @9 singles this past week im at 1417. And that's w/o a peak, with my weak deadlift stance, and w/o wraps. Im in a good place to blow that total out of the water when i get back into wraps and sumo.

Edit. I lied. My dead was 590.7 not 597. So my old total is ~1422.

Honestly it looks like you should do his post project routine And then roll right into a 8-12 week meet cycle. If you have life time, of course. Where would that put you on the calendar?

That was precisely my plan brother. I think the project ends feb 26th. So add another two weeks and that puts me at march 11th. 8 weeks would be may 6th. 12 would be june 4th. I've got to get on powerlifting watch. I know a lot of guys from the crew here are doing a meet sometime early April. There's an APF meet near me on may 6th-8th I've been thinking about which would be 8 weeks. So that looks like the winner so far.

Edit: there's also a upa meet on july 1st that a lot of the guys are competing at. I'd probably rather do that one bc i bought a upa member card for that meet last September.

Lets do it up big fella. The early april one is in Iowa somewhere. I doubt ill do that one. The APF meet is in Lombard. Then there's the UPA Wings of Strength meet on july 1st in Tinley Park. Lombard and Tinley are within 45 mins of my place, so you'd be welcome to crash on the gf and I's couch instead of driving up the day before and getting a hotel or driving up the day of.

Quick update before the gf and i go out for this dumb hallmark holiday.

^somewhere in there i decided not to deadlift today. My lower back was flaring up during these. It was a little sore all day from the deficits yesterday and these just made it worse. I feel a little guilty about skipping them, but I honestly think it was for the best.

Gonna try my hardest to get in for rows and mobility tomorrow. I slacked when doing mobility last weekend at home and i paid for it a bit this week. My tissues around my hips are starting to get pissed off so i need to put in a little TLC there.

Load drop. I write repeats as "RPs" too.

Edit: i dont think i ever mentioned this. But the standard load drop % we've been using all project is 5%. For the generalized intermediate template it varied from 4-6% to 6-9% depending on how high of a stress that week was supposed to provide.

Ah, that makes sense.

I thought it was a different exercise and couldn't for the life of me figure out what.

You think if I wanna run rpe I should follow one of these templates or just use rpe with chads reps and volume be ok?

I've seen many more chucks get ran through then the reeboks. I know 4-5 masters or elite raw lifters personally still on one pair in 1-2 year time frame and love them over chucks.

Great work in here ... I'm still rockin the reeboks Sean sold me and love them but they are finally starting to separate

Probably not a great sample size considering you've probably seen 100x as many chucks worn than you have the reeboks lol.

A July meet might be something for me to look at, depending on a lot of things, but it would be cool to come support you even if I didn't lift.

I have. But that is bc its the norm. Doesn't mean they are the best. I'm saying those that have time in the game that have switched liked them.

I'm sure they're fine shoes, they look intelligently designed and Reebok is generally a quality brand so I can't say I'd be worried on that front.

I'm just saying the converse are still a good option, especially for the price.

In fact, I've had mine for probably 3 years without issue. I've used them to squat, DL, strongman carries, stones. Never a problem, except for some fabric inside the heel getting a little torn up. Haven't blown the sides out yet at least.

I think youd be fine running one of Chad's templates. You'll probably have to feel it out a tad more than you'd have to since the entire program isn't laid out purely with rpe regulating intensity, but it's definitely doable.

Great work in here ... I'm still rockin the reeboks Sean sold me and love them but they are finally starting to separate

Thanks dmax. I'm likely going to go with those reeboks. Didn't mean to start a flat shoe battle royal in here ha. I'm loving the discussion though. The sciency part of me wants to know what makes chucks vs reeboks better for different people. It seems like people that sumo/squat wide and apply a lot of lateral pressure onto the shoe have better luck with the reeboks. So if that were the case id be smart to get the reebs.

Cool man. It sounds awesome either way. The invitation will stay open, we'll figure it out as it gets a little closer and you can see how your life/training lines up with that july meet.

I was talking to a guy at the gym today and he informed me that this meet is only teen, juniors, masters, women's. No mens open. Thats about the dumbest damn thing. Back to the drawing board.

I wish this project ended a week or two sooner. If it did, I may be able to get away with just throwing together a short peaking block and then just compete with the crew the first week of April.

Lol as in they don't have legit equipment likely. We're better off then anyway

Nah i dont think that's it. The owner of my gym is the IL UPA state chairman and usually takes our monolift and bench to the UPA meets he runs. The guy i was talking to said he talked to Byron (owner of my gym) about it and he said some other guy didn't wanna have the mens open. I dunno, something seems weird about the whole situation lol.

Mobility. I did my right wrist out of some pain. Then right elbow bc im getting a little biceps tendon flare up thing going on. I didnt get down to the knees or ankles, hopefully they'll be alright lol.

Doesn't wanna deal with team Douchebagbridge not weighing in and squatting high as **** making their meets seem illegitimate.

Lol. Great point. Glad im not the only one that feels that way

Ahhhh, just watched your paused deadlifts (so behind). I didn't know what that was. How does pausing help you? :)

TRAC is recommending i decrease training load today. It says "minimize volume or move training to a different day". Ef that, I only have a week left of this. Volume is backing down this week to sort of mini peak for the testing we'll do. I was planning on trying to get through the entire session tonight instead of doing deads/SLDLs tomorrow, but because of the TRAC recommendation i'll move deads to tomorrow again.

There were times when TRAC and I weren't on speaking terms.

There were times when TRAC and I weren't on speaking terms.

It usually says to resume training as normal, but today it says this. I say no. I am more tired than usual, my lower back and hips are a little sore, i dont really have much motivation to train today, plus my hr readings were about 8 points higher than they have been so i those are likely the reasons that it is recommending slowing down a bit. But, aint nobody got time for that right now. I should be pretty fatigued at this point in the project as I've been training hard for 6 weeks now. The show must go on!

Oh, and my rectus abdominis is pretty freakin sore from those rollouts. Damn things are tough.

puccah8808 They help you stay tight with your positioning. I often loose positioning from off the floor to the knees. So pausing right off the floor makes me maintain positioning in my weakest ROM.
