Need to increase my HDL!

Gutterpump

Banned
Hi guys, I know this has been posted in several other threads, but I just got this year's physical back and thought I'd post up a few results for feedback/comments:

Total Cholesterol is fine: 159 (<200)

My HDL is below range: 39 (>40) I need to boost this

My LDL is in range: 110 (<130)

My triglycerides are fine: 75 (<150)

My HDL/LDL ratio is pretty bad. Should I add more EVOO, Coconut oil, and maybe niacin to my diet? Any suggestions?

Also my Urea Nitrogen is at top of range: 25 (7-25) - anything I should do for this?

Thanks in advance guys/gals

You think that's bad? Why?. All that "good" and "bad" cholesterol stuff is a bunch of bs. Did the doc call you and tell you you're numbers are terrible or something?. It's still BS, don't base your health on numbers, especially cholesterol, which is needed.

my total chol is fine, but hdl is on low end. I just wanted to make sure things were safe in case they were about to be stressed further :) Going to up my fats a bit I think.

Maybe get a statin if you feel going the script route?

Absolutely DO NOT USE a Statin! Google side effects!

I have the same numbers as you. Doctor recommended high intensity exercise, green vegetables and nicotinic acid (flushing type niacin).

“Trying to prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol is like trying to reduce calories by taking the lettuce off your [hamburger].”

I'm just sayin. Going by cholesterol is the old way of thinking that is completely wrong. I guess this old(wrong) way of thinking is still ingrained for some reason.

Agree. After all, cholesterol is the building block for hormones. My doc swears that it's the triglyceride level that is more worrisome.

Yup! I'd NEVER use a statin! I don't need to lower my cholesterol at all!! In fact, my total cholesterol can even go up a bit to be optimal!

I'm gong to increase my EVOO (2 shots a day), fish oil, more veggies, and I'm going to get some cardarine most likely, for it's effects on HDL.

Got 2 bottles of Cardarine in the mail. Going to run it for maybe 8 weeks. Will get new labs in 2-3 months to see if HDL is actually effected, as it claims in the cardarine write-up.

Smart strategy. I dig it.

As an aside, veggies won't do anything magical per se but if these replace processed crap or carbs (yeah, that's right) then it's reasonable to conclude that substitution of (green and fibrous) in place of other lipid-unfriendly macro's will lead to improved lipid levels.

Lab work was taken while diet was pretty clean. Cardarine should be here soon. Now taking 2 shots of olive oil and eating 6-12 eggs daily (part of a TKD)

Triglycerides are a real problem when it comes to heart disease. Cholesterol, not so much (trigs interact with lipoproteins and either increase or decrease residence time (increase for LDL and decrease for HDL). Plus they alter the density of the lipoproteins which causes issue

Good info ....and what macro notoriously and inarguably raises Tri's?

Carbs ;)

Jiggy is all over it !! :p

Great thread, this should be prime reading material for anyone with the slightest hint of an interest in good health.

Cholesterol & Lipoproteins = good, absolutely necessary for healthy body function & we all have different base values.

Statins = vessel hardening, liver damaging, endocrine disrupting, neuro function impairing slow death.

As T-Bone says - systemic inflammation produces heart disease, amongst a host of other undesirable conditions. Cut the processed foods & sugars, increase the good fats & veg.

Good info. Currently bulking on LGD which raises overall cholesterol. What do you guys think about red yeast rice to go along with my cycle assist?

No, don't. They took it out of a cycle support product a few years back because it can cause liver damage. Also...

Livestrong Article said:
Liver Damage Liver damage is one of the potential risks associated when using red yeast rice. The signs of liver damage include dark urine, increased liver enzymes in laboratory tests and jaundice, which is yellowing of the white areas of the eyes. Physicians at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center released a study in the “Annals of Internal Medicine” about the correlation of using red yeast rice and liver damage. The results conclude “red yeast rice, like any HMG-CoA inhibitor, can cause hepatitis.” In addition, the doctor’s state that nutritional supplements are exempt from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspection and the labeling of the ingredients may not be accurate. - See more at: Invalid Link Removed

What would suggest then?

Cycle Assist already has several ingredients in it that help with cholesterol levels. Policosanol being the main one. Lipids will go back down to pre-cycle levels PCT and post PCT, especially with the help of Cycle Assist. Just plan on running it during PCT also. Plus I believe Toremifene has been proven to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol. So I'd run Torem for PCT. That's just one of the reasons it's my SERM of choice.

I gotcha, thanks for the heads up man! Hopefully I can return this red yeast rice

Damnit, I didn't know about the liver damage aspect, I like the stuff. What dose is reported to cause damage? Or is it more of a cumulative effect?

I believe it's more of a cumulative effect. It was years ago and AI Sports removed it from their cycle support product because of the possibility of liver damage.

Here's a good thread about it from 2007,

Thank you. I'll pass that on to the SARMs thread too, there's been a little discussion about it over there recently.

Hey guys, just wanted to say that I dropped the GW/cardarine that I was taking for HDL/endurance, etc. Was causing me nausea and hypo symptoms but I honestly think it was the combination of that and an oral I was taking. Dropped them both.

Your numbers are decent, although I wouldn't be happy with an LDL of 110, but I wouldn't panic either. The active in Heart Help, is also far superior at raising HDL than lowering LDL but it does both. You can find it for a decent price as well.. id highly consider that. I get blood work done OFTEN.

Statins are better at lowering ldl
Heart Help does me better raising hdl

Sup CB. What is heart help?

Thanks. I've also made it a priority now to do intense cardio at least a few times a week. I'll look into Heart Help.

T-Bone thanks for the heads up man. Makes me mad for not knowing this ahead of time.

I've got such strange cholesterol issues... I really don't know what to do.

My total cholesterol is on the low end, so I don't really want to take anything to lower it anymore as this would be detrimental, especially for any inflammation in my body. Cholesterol is really needed at the cellular level, for regeneration. I need something to boost HDL without lowering total cholesterol. Statins are 100% out of the question. They will greatly lower my already low total cholesterol.

So far I've just been taking 2 shots of olive oil a day, and continue to take Life Support, but it has statin-like substances in it.

You don't really have an issue. You are worrying over nothing in my opinion. Stop taking the life support, continue with your olive oil and maybe add some fish oil and then forget about it.

I'm only running Life support for on cycle protection though, it's not a staple supplement. Currently running some dienolone.

I think I may have an absorption issue due to the low cholesterol. 150 total is actually really low, it's low enough to give someone low test. I'm on TRT for a varicocele and microadenoma though.

Same issue here. My total cholesterol is 154, LDL is 103, HDL is a measly 31 and triglycerides are 101. I've had low HDL for over 30 years.

Your HDL in relation to your low total cholesterol is not that bad.

Sure, It could stand some improvement but nothing alarming at play here as it's the ratio (HDL:TOTAL) and not just the individual lipoprotein values that matters.

Have you tried shots of olive oil? I've been chasing them down with shakes. Wonder if it'll have an effect

Over time, I'm sure it will. To what degree, will vary. Don't discount the potent influence of cardio for HDL improvement and a product called PPC would be a worthwhile consideration (but expensive). Fish oil is an obvious no-brainer here as well.

PS: Why "chase it"? Just toss it in your protein shake it on foods. Same MOA.

I haven't tried olive oil shots. I'm Italian, have to try this!

Agree with this but always looking for ways to increase HDL.

I practiced karate for 20 years with high intensity cardio workouts - no change in HDL.

Perspective: Who's to say it wasn't in fact changed for the better via your 20 years of cardio? Did you have it tested 21+ years ago? ;)

Also, if you mess around with AAS or PH's and if it's still remained the same after 20 years, maybe the cardio was the reason?

All if this is so complicated b/c it's all affected by so many variables and influences ya know? Hard to chart progress and affix it to one specific factor.

Absolutely agree.
