Booneman's Optimum Alpha (-)-Epicatechin log

I could t resist and did legs today ha. Just some higher rep depletion sets but really working the contraction and squeeze. Weights were light as focus was on the squeeze. Feeling really energized still even with zero carbs. Chicken for days.

Honestly the last two competitions I did when I would really carb down the three weeks before I was just shocked how high my strength and endurance stayed. Days I would expect to just be dead I was able to get really solid workouts in. And I've found sometimes working the contractions and really focusing on the mind muscle connection are some of my best workouts.

Today was a different story ha... The last 3 days at literally <15g are finally catching up to me. Had a shoulder and back depleteion session and around the 35 min mark I was just dragging... Finished it all off but man, am I dead now. Lfiting my fingers to type this is a struggle ha. Gonna be a looonnngggg day today and probably worse tomorrow...

Pumps are literally absolute zero, brain is getting a little foggy (which is intense as I usually do lower carbs through the week anyways so that just tells you how deep this is right now), endurance is ok when I'm all stimmed up, but once the stims wear off I'm basically shuffling my feet just to walk.

"Lifting my fingers to type is a struggle" yeah lifting on no carbs isn't very gratifying, trying to get a pump is like trying to find a waterfall on the moon

so true... I felt flatter every time i looked in the mirror ha... it was like wathcing glycogen being sweat out of me

Feeling. So. Dead.

Absolutely wanted to die through my chest/arms workout today. SO flat, so tired, so foggy. No amount of stims seems to help. CARB ME. Gonna suffer through the day today and then begin my carb up after a short HIIT bout tomorrow morning. Prob gonna take a before and after pic (tomorrow and Sunday AM) jsut to see how different I look ha. I'll post it up if its good enough.

Into my second day carbing up now... Feeling great. Been adding recompadrol and r-ala to meals to help partition. Gonna hit ayce sushi tonight to fill everything up.

Last two days gym sessions have been full body, hiit style. Felt awful yesterday but much better already today. Hunger is totally rampant ha.

Man, nigiri load.
Gimme all the protonz and carbzzzz.

You ever try the sashimi?

Race complete. Ran 13.1mi in 135min so just over 10min/mi. Goal was to stay under 160min so I was more than happy. Even stopped for an emergency dump about mile 7 (thanks, sushi ha). Honestly felt pretty good throughout but it rained a ton so I have some wicked blisters from wet feet. Endurance wasn't even a problem it was simply boredom that would prevent me from doing a run this long again ha.

Gotta say though, at the 5k mark I felt like I could have sprinted that first portion and done that in like record time. Between the carb up and what I assume has to be some endurance help from the epicatechin I might just need to test that in a week or so.

Can't wait to get back to real training fully this week with proper food and such. Hopefully the results will begin to really show now that I'm not on such a strict carbless mess and training like a nut job. This week will be a ton of travel so workouts might be a bit sporadic and next weekend is my annual drinkathon at psu so really it'll be the following week that its full blown training. Probably will train every day that week to catch up on missed GAINZ

Damn iam late ... how is the epi so far ? Anything good happening.

Nothing of note yet. Diet and training ahd been 100% geared towards peaking for the run sunday so it was a heavy carb deplete then load, followed by a carb up but no real gym time. Cant say I've noticed anything but too many variables in that short time make it hard to tell. I'll have a better idea if theres any real effects by the end of this week.

Legs are totally thrashed today. My feet are giant blisters (thanks, rain) and the pounding on the pavement has all my joints pretty stiff and overall feet (bones/tendons) sore. Traveling today and wednesday (5 total flights) should be a treat... Hoping I can get in a good leg session thurs or fri.

Iam subbed for your gains and descriptive reviews :)

Tried out Controlled Labs white pipes this morning (1 package):

Flavor - Juicy Watermelon - I'm in mexico (in a hotel) and water is at a premium so I ahd to mix in only about 8oz... WOW was this strong flavoring. I enjoy strong flavoring as i usually drink as much water as possible with my pre, but having limited options today held me back. The falvor itself was closer to a slightly sour flavoring vs a very sweet watermelon. Not bad considering the lack of water and I think it would be really enjoyable at 15-20oz or even more. Definitely not a good mixing buddy though unless you're trying to mask a flavor.

Pumps - Back and Shoulder day - I have been thoroughly carbed up the last few days so I expected a prett solid pump, even with just the hotel gym equipment. Back exercises went a bit slowly as I was a bit tired, and the pump was just average. I partially blame the equipmnt as it was not ideal. Shoulders went much better as I went high reps and with the DB's actually in the normal weights I had a very solid pump going after my final set. Nothing "skin splitting" or "painful", but I am not much of a responder to pump products so this was a better than average experience for me.

Endurance - I was tired to start out, but felt better as the workout progressed. Can't say that I was able to eek out any extra reps or sets that I would not have been able to otherwise.

Overall - The main thing I wanted to see was a good solid pump, which I felt was better than average, but not the best I've experinced. Endurance was nothing to write home about though so no marks here. Overall I would give this a 7/10 as its better than many pump products (which do literally 0 for me), but still not on par with high volume.

Workout this morning was at the hotel here in mexico, so nothing too exciting. Equipment wasn't terrible though so I felt like I got something accomplished.

I had expected to really feel some pumps and endurance effects by now since its been 4 days of carb up and well fed as well as lower work volume leading up to and after the race... So far, I have to say that the Epicatechin has had no noticeable effect on my pumps, endurance, bf, or overall performance... I'll evaluate further at the end of this week as this will be a full week of proper weights and dieting, but so far, this is a dud for me. As with any product though, I will reserve judgement until the full course has been run.

Eat a big burrito for me ya lucky guy you.

Yeah and bring me back one!

Im only here for a day and then 3 flights to get to memphis, 1 day there, then 2 flights to state college... burritos just dont travel that well haha

I'm subbed brother.

Congrats on that run time, but eww people actually run for fun?!?

Looking forward to all the gains that will be happening in here!

I'm 100% with you... Running =\= fun in any way. I don't mind a 3-4 miler every once in awhile (with a reason) but anything over 6 is just beyond boring and pointless.

AS i sit here I'm between my 2nd and 3rd flight of the day... gonna make it over to memphis in a few hrs, check in to the hotel and then hit the gym for some chest/arms. Legs still need another day to recover (hips are still pretty tight and my feet are still pretty achy from the race.) so I'll get them in tomorrow morning (so excited)

Stim breaks suck btw. I enjoy being buzzed all day ha.

At least flying you can't really use the extra energy. Just bottled up w nothing to do. When you hit Memphis you need to get some Gus's Fried Chicken. It's the bomb.

Or go into Earnestine & Hazel's and order 2 soul burgers. Seriously some of the best burgers I've ever had. But you wanna get 2, trust me. Worth your time!

I'm only here for one day this time but I'll be back for a whole week later this month. I'll check those out for sure!

Chest and arms yesterday was a nice change up (afternoon workout). It was great to have no time pressure and really just enjoy the gym for awhile. Strength was down a bit and pumps still are no better but the overall workout felt good. Recovery between sets is pretty solid and I was able to finish my workout faster than normal.

This morn was my first post-run leg day so I was both excited and nervous as I was still a bit stiff and my feet are still achy. Started out very light on squats and really took my time warming up. Strength was absolutely not there and I had to do my working sets 30lb lighter than I had before I started cutting back heavy leg work around the start of September. Very disappointing. By the end of my sets I was really hurting and could tell my legs were totally ready for a brutal workout so I kept all the weights a bit lighter and focused on good form and execution, knowing I'll still be sore as hell. For the second day in a row I flew through the workout and seemed to be ready for the next set very quickly. Still no pumps to speak of which at this point can pretty much be ruled out as a benefit from the epi for this run.

So far the only benefit that I seem to have gotten is a bit of faster intra set recovery but nothing to speak of in terms of strength, fat loss, true endurance, or pumps. I'll count up how many doses I have left when I get home Monday and depending I may try to add a third cap each day for the last bit of the run and see if that produces better results.

Friday was a travel day and the weekend was my Relax time at my alma mater. A nice weekend full of friends, a few beers, tons of food, and good weather. All around fun and relaxing, but I'm anious to get back in the gym. Taking afew days in a row off always feels odd to me ha.

Plan is to either hit a short shoulder session this evening depending when I get back in to town, or worst case, just get back into it tomorrow morning as normal. As much as I loved all the food this weekend, I have some wicked bloat going on from that plus driniking so I cant wait to drop that again and not feel so soft ha.

Gonna count up my caps tonight and if theres enough (not sure how many days I have left) I'll be bumping up to 3 caps/day starting tomorrow and hoping to see some benefits.

Just weighed in when I got home and was sitting at 177.9 so really very little damage done. Once the bloat totally goes away tomorrow or weds, I'll be right back to normal. Gonna go hit some shoulders tonight because I miss the gym.

Also, counted up my pills and I only have 4 days left so I'm just gonna run them out as is. At this point I'm not expecting to see anything change in the last few days. Final review by the end of the week and final pics.

Did you ever try 3 caps? I just tried 3 caps each day over last weekend because 2 caps to me doesn't feel like it used to. 3 caps felt like what 2 caps did feel like around 1.5 weeks in.

I have not. That was my plan but I only have 4 days left anyways and never felt anything from 2. Maybe I should just bump to 3 for the last couple days here and try that.

Think I will actually. Took my 2 this morning so I'll pop another here in a minute before I hit shoulders and see how that feels today and then again tomorrow morning. That'll make weds my last day then instead of Thursday.

I personally have always taken both with my preWO drink, 45 min from training. It works much better w acute dosing IMHO, similar to ArA in that regard. Never got anything on other -epicatechin products w split dosing. 2 preWO is where it's at.

That's how I've been dosing on my workout days. Mon/fri are usually my off days tho but I just felt like going in this afternoon since I was on a plane this morning.

Took the third cap about 40min pre and hit shoulders hard. Felt good overall since I was well refeed and decently rested from the weekend, but I honestly can't say there was anything special other than just feeling good. No special pumps or endurance and strength was on par with normal days.

I will continue to dose 3 caps pre workout tomorrow weds and thurs (found another 3 caps in my travel bag that I must've accidentally miscounted at some point). Final review Friday.

3 caps before solo back day this morning... Back has been feeling god the last few weeks (had tweaked something a while back and had been avoiding regular deads to rest it) so I decided to go for deadlifts... Man was I out of practice and even at a max of 245x3 I am already feeling it, and not all in a good way. Rest of the workout was focused on getting a good pump and feeling the muscles since it was a solo day. Pump was just average though but I had a good connection once I got moving so that was nice. Overall a good workout and hopefully my back will still feel ok, just a little doms, tomorrow.

I do 2 about 45-60 min before the gym and have been on it for six months or so and still feel the effects daily. I notice when I forget to take it. Boone are u done starving urself now and going to be eating more calories for a little while?

Yeah he's up to like 4 bowls of spinach a day

I've been well fed for over a week and a half now (since the race a week ago Sunday). Sunday last week was a massive refeed post race, mon-thirs were regular cals, fri-sun were massive overfeedings and no workouts (so full and rested for sure) and then back to normal the last two days. Unfortunately at this point I can't pin lack of effect on diet as its been more food, carbs, cals, and diversity than it has in months.

I'm kinda interested to see how u do on three caps a day, not many non responders to this product. May send u another bottle so u can try it out. I also am going to be shipping out my new pre workout for some beta testers soon also, maybe we can have you try both. I am just not a fan of any of my peeps not having gains haha

Well I'll be on a stim break for a few more weeks but if you want to send another bottle I'll be more than happy to give it a shot for longer at 3 caps and continue the log. Totally up to you though, but I appreciate the thought/offer either way.

Legs this morning went really well. Weights had to stay decreased a bit and it seems like it may take some time to get back to where I was before I began working more for endurance rather than weight and mass. I did seem to fly through my workout at a nice clip (partially due to the lighter weights requiring less rest and loading time ha) but it was definitely a good day. Could be the first signs of positive impact as this is day 3 at 3 caps. Pumps were nothing to speak of though. Tomorrow will be the final day of this log.

I think it works better to see differences over 8 wks. It's no steroid it's just tea extract so considering it's helpful at all is huge in my opinion.

Today was my final workout for this bottle. 3 caps this morning and chest day (have been off my normal split this week to allow me more days in the gym and to really hammer each muscle while also exploring current strength levels to setup my next split).

Pump was average, as has been the case consistently. Endurance was pretty good today as I managed to finish with a shorter time than expected. I also still felt pretty fresh at the end fo the workout which was nice. Strength still was not quite up to par though which is getting me down a bit even though I normally never train for numbers... just a bummer to see things that were easy now be so hard.

Final review with weight, pics and thoughts tomorrow.

If you're training tomorrow see if the pump is similar or even less than today

For sure... tomorrow morning will be an arms session so that'll pretty much be the ultimate test ha

Welcome all, to my first venture into the (-)-epi world!

I will be logging optimum alpha's 250mg pure (-)-epicatechin product. From their website:

(-)-Epicatechin by Optimum Alpha improves muscular and cardiovascular endurance, and strength. (-)-Epicatechin is a natural herbal extract shown to increase the body's natural oxidative capacity and energy reserves. Taken in conjunction with physical activity, (-)-Epicatechin increases aerobic metabolism, strength, endurance, lean muscle development, and reduces body fat. In addition, (-)-Epicatechin has been shown to reduce Myostatin levels and increases Follistatin in the body. Extracted from green tea, (-)-Epicatechin is a natural antioxidant that provides many added health benefits including improved cholesterol levels and reduced blood pressure. (-)-Epicatechin is a safe natural supplement, that when taken regularly, has shown to increase performance in the gym and on the field. All Optimum Alpha products are cGMP certified to ensure the highest quality.

My goals for this log will be mostly to explore the world of epi and get a feel for how it treats me. I would like to lean out a bit further as the last few weeks my body comp has been slipping a bit.

I will be running a half marathon October 4th so my training until that point will be tapering down a bit (currently running a 5 day PHAT routine) as my running tapers up.

I will be following this split until the race (am/pm):
Mon- off/run
Tues- back+shoulders/run
Weds- legs
Thurs- chest+arms/run
Fri- off/run
Sat- pull power/long run
Sun- push power/ long run

Diet is very simple, IF style where I typically have my first meal (shake) at 3pm and dinner around 6-7pm, followed by a pre-bed meal. I eat typically 1600-1700kcals psmf style all but weds/sat which are 2700-3000kcal refeed days where I tend to include plenty of cheat foods as well as my normal bro foods.

First dose was taken this evening to give me an initial boost, first workout dose will be with tomorrow's workout.

Feel free to ask questions, post thoughts and such as we go!

Final Review:

Dosing throughout this log was 2 caps either 30-45min pre workout or off days first thing in the morning (for consistency). Only the last 4 days was dosing increased to 3 caps.

Based on label claims:
-improved muscular and cardiovascular endurance
Most of my training was geared towards improving overall endurance so this was an area I expected to see the most benefit, alas I did not notice much. My running did not improve in any measurable amount as I trained up to my half marathon, and even though I felt i did very well in the event, I attribute this to the training, and not to this supplement as there was not any extra increase when I began taking it. At 3 caps/day (last 4 days) there may have been a very slight muscular endurance increase, but with this short of a time frame its hard to say that this product was the sole reason for that.

-improved strength.
While training throughout most of this log was not centered around strength, I did not experience any benefits here. Strength dipped as could be expected due to diet changes, and after calories were added back in, did not improve in any measurable amount.

-increased aerobic metabolism, strength, endurance, lean muscle development
My diet was not tailored to build muscle, but I also felt that I did not lose much if any while training lighter. I attribute most of this to diet, but there may have been a small amount of help from this. I can say that strength did dip and stay lower even after the race as calories were added back to normal.

-reduced body fat
The body fat and overall weight that was lost leading up to the race was right on par with what I had expected from my dietary changes. Nothing extra was seen and as the pictures show, once calories were added back, body composition did not even stay the same, but actually got worse even with only a very slight increase in total weekly calories.

-reduced Myostatin levels and increases Follistatin in the body (cannot test)

-reduced blood pressure
i typically run about 106/90 and when measured yesterday in my normal fasted state it was 105/88. I cannot say that this is statistically significant and I'm sure is easily attributable to sodium intake, etc. No results here.

Other expected/reported benefits:
-Increased pumps
I typically have a fairly low carb diet most of the week, with a few refeeds sprinkled in so pumps are not necessarily something I get to a strong degree normally. That said, there have bee quite a few days where I have eaten plenty of carbs during and after my race and I have not seen any increase in my normal state. Vascularity has not improved either.

-Increased daily fullness
Again, diet will dictate a large portion of this, so for reference I will use my last stack of xgels/abe which had me noticeably fuller and tighter throughout the day. This was not the case during this run as I felt soft and looked flat for most of the run. Even after refeeds I did not see any increase in fullness beyond what is normally experienced.

Based on the label claims and my expectations, this was a huge disappointment for me. I felt that I got zero benefit from this product at the recommended dose. There were potentially some benefits that may have come on had it been run higher for longer, but this was not the target of this log and cannot be expected for most as the price to run at a higher dose would make it non cost-effective. I would not recommend this product as it simply did not work for me. Based on my experience I would give this product 1/10 with the single point based on the potential to see benefit at the higher dose (3+caps/day)

Thank you to AlphaCommandr for the opportunity to get my feet wet in the (-)-Epicatechin field. Unfortunately this looks like an area that I may not be delving into much further. My next (and potentially last) run will most likely be with Epi-Plex to see if there is a significant difference with the addition of an absorption enhancer.

Starting weight: 179.7lb

For reference, the lowest I've gotten this summer was 174lb and was significantly tighter. Vacation two weeks ago paired with the cardarine I had been taking and the subsequent lessening of my running has seemed to put a stark halt to fat loss and even recomp or maintenance.

I would like to see myself tighten up a bit more during this run and at least up until my race begin to lose weight again.
