Pec injury/tear

felt what i can only describe as velcor tearing while on rep 3/5 on my first set of flat barbell bench press, with the adrenaline flowing i was able to complete the last 2 repetitions before jumping up and looking at my spotter in horror. first thing he said was "i heard it". i aborted the rest of the workout and went home, took 800mg of ibuprofen and iced for 20 mins qhour. my injured left pec appreciably more inflamed/swollen than the unaffected right pec. after a few hours and another 800mg dose of ibuprofen the pain began to subside, as has the inflammation.

the anterior axillary fold on the injured side is essentially identical to the contralateral side, there is no divot/defect that i can notice, and there is no ecchymosis on my pec or arm. i saw one of the ortho interns i'm friends with this morning who checked me out: he believes i did not sustain a major injury considering my current state (full rom and much less weakness now), but that my history is concerning. the staff here just called to get me in with an ortho attending asap- still waiting to hear back since their office is at lunch.

my mechanism of injury and symptomatology is obviously classic for a pec muscle injury or some sort, but i'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similarly scary (nothing freaks lifters out like a tearing sensation in a muscle) and not actually had much sequelae following the traumatic event.

Did same thing about 2 years ago. Heard it, felt it. Best I can describe was the juncture of the pec /delt area. It was primarily pec in my opinion. Several days later I experienced bruising down the bicep just below shoulder. I was in week 4 of my first (and only) epi$tane cycle. E made my muscles rock hard to the point of inflexibility and caused the tear IMO. Unfortunately it was a long time before I could bench again - 6 months a year maybe? And when I did get back the area tightened up so I did not push it. Today I do not feel it anymore but it is always in the back or your mind, you know?

This happened to Layne Norton and he got surgery for it. He wrote an article about it.

hey man, i saw a great ortho surgeon on monday who confirmed that i have a small tear within the muscle itself. it's non-operable, but i should be back to normal within 2 months or so. i feel great, no real weakness of discomfort at this point. i believe i got really really lucky- not messing with flat barbell bench anymore
