Liftandswim's Log

Late but in this!
Glad to have ya!

Quick summary: Current PRs : 385 squat, 315 bench, 440 deadlift (all fairly recent)

Running 20 week modified 5/3/1 training cycle per wendler's beyond 5/3/1. Finishing up week 5.

Consistently cleaning up form. Semi-frequent with training vids. And just got fancy new oly shoes.

Lol I'm bored. No school today, don't work until 4pm.

Nice! i need to pick up a copy of Beyond 531 - been doing 531 for a while & still enjoy it.

Consistently cleaning up form - always good sir, always....

I bought the ebook awhile back. Has a lot of useful tweaks/alterations that can be applied to the original program. Solves a lot of the issues people have with the original program too.

But as you know, nothing is ever perfect. And what works for one doesn't work for all.

And yep, technique is key. Gotta be able to express the strength you have, can't do that with sloppy form.

good call on all points - there's so many facets & variables - form/weight/food/mood/health/confidence/etc - opportunities for learning & growth with every session

Olympic shoes feel good on squats don't they? :D

I think we are all working in form constantly...even when we get a lift right. It's crazy how many pounds can go on the bar if you dial in your technique vs not dialed in. Going back to your guy at the gym, many guys like him don't even realize there is skill involved in the lifts...and quite frankly they may not want to know and we don't have the time to explain it! Haha

They feel great. How you liking your Adidas?

And yeahhhh, big reason I don't talk to anyone about lifting (including my close friends). I have you guys for that :)

y'all are giving me the bug to try some squat shoes.... are they really all that compared to chucks?

I feel like they help me stay more upright and engage the quads a little more. Mine have a .60 inch heel.

I'm digging them. Don't like switching shoes during my workouts much though lol

Never had chucks. I started squatting in running shoes (didn't we all??) then moved to barefoot which worked for awhile, but I always had trouble "screwing my feet in". Not to mention, wear the wrong socks that day and your balance sucks. So I'm not much help in that regard lol.

This vid may answer some of your questions too.

That feel when you wear oly shoes for bench so you start with flat shoes on a deadlift then switch to oly shoes for a bench movement then back to flats for another deadlift movement.

Thank god I bench on my toes or Id have to do that tomorrow lol

Yeah people don't think that form has anything to do with lifting.. Lol. A guy basically the same size as me was benching next to me doing like 135 and having a rough time cause he elbows were basically straight out. I don't help people unless they ask any more though, cause they always think they are right or say I'm just lifting to look good or some bs..

Lol if form had nothing to do with lifting then they should have been at my squat session last where I had no form on my 440 double and failed the had good form on 450 double and crushed it how would they explain that

Yupp, most people just don't care. So unless I see someone who's doing something that's going to hurt them, not over time, but in the next few reps, then I MIGHT say something. Even then it's 50/50.

You realize people don't think (and act) logically, right? Lol

You obviously just had a better song in is all

Missed a lot but I'm loving all the form talk! Y'all are making me want to get new shoes too!!...speaking of form, some poor guy was flat benching 225 completely flat and one arm/side of the bar was at least 6-8 inches lower than the other side and up near his throat! It's so hard not to say something just because you don't want them to get hurt! They sure wouldn't take it from a 5'5" 130lb chick very well! Lol

Omg I can only imagine the big-headedness that would come out of some of these ego-lifters if a woman attempted to correct their technique.

Do it and film it?

Thoughts:
Pretty pleased with that front squat. Nice and deep. As you can see, core rigidity is the limiting factor, not leg strength. Left a good 15lbs on the table too! Was supposed to hit some short rest volume back squats, but couldn't resist the urge to try front squats in my OLY shoes. This the LAST TIME I will deviate from the written program, I promise. Someone call me out if I do. It takes a lot of self-control for me, ugh.

Pull-ups are getting back up there too. Next week I'll be switching to 5x5 with weight so we'll see how that goes. By the end of these 20 weeks I would like to be able to hit 30+ pull-ups and 5x5 weighted pull-up with at least BW+45. Having little side goals on accessories like pull-ups keeps assistance work interesting IMO.

Rest of the workout was a breeze. Would love critiques/comments/ect, as always. Stay Strong AM.

Great looking rep and great session too Front squat looked soild maybe slight rounding over but barely

Thanks dmax.

And yep, but if you look before/after I squat the weight I already look rounded over (at least to me). And that's me standing up straight, years of bad posture. I'm working on it though.

Perhaps u only perceive it as slow I know a lot of times I think something is slow and the guys will be like that was fast

I can definitely sympathize with what you're saying, I've had reps I thought were grinders, but were fast on tape.

However, I actually have both videos on my phone to compare and the 385 is slower haha

Damn! Beat me to 315 haha. Gotta test it out after my deload. Nice work man!

Hahaha that would be hilarious!

Killer job on the 315!!!!

Congrats on the FS PR LiftS. I don't know how y'all can get your arms back like that...

Thanks bud. And idk I never struggled with rack position really

I have to cross my arms because I can't bend them back like that. I also have a problem with the bar rolling forward. Probably correlating...

Sounds like some wrist flexibility issues.

And the bar rolling forward could be a number of things. Poor rack position, lack of spinal rigidity causing you to round over and have the bar roll, hips shooting to far back upon descent, ect

I'll do a video of 135 FS tomorrow to show my form before my normal squat routine.

Sounds good, I'm by no means an expert, but I can point out pretty basic things

I'd appreciate any feedback. I haven't done much of them but would like to get it down. Maybe I'll use a weight tht rolls instead of 135... That would make more sense. Lol

Yeah, whatever weight starts to see form breakdown would be more beneficial in the grand scheme of things

4 wheels. Can't really front squat anymore with my shoulder. I miss them! Glad those Oly shoes worked out for you. They can be a big advantage.

Working around all that BS with your shoulder must be a living hell. I can't imagine it (knock on wood!).

And worth every penny! The stability is unreal. Squatting barefoot for as long as I did makes me appreciate them that much more
