Sean's Powerlifting Journey

135x18 is my best so far, lol.... That's weighing in at 146. Hi Sean , I'm sure enjoying things here from the sidelines! Keep killing it!! :)

Thats still some good reppage. There's guys in gyms that can't even do that I'm sure. Plus, anything over 5 reps is considered cardio.

And thanks! Appreciate ya breakin up the sausage fest.

Ha ha, that's my kind of cardio then!
It's too bad I'm so fkn scared of big lifts after tearing my pec! The last thing I need is a torn quad! Lol.....
;)

Sean (or Rodja or anyone else who might know), why can I squat more weight with a narrower stance, like just outside shoulder-width & feet pointed nearly fwd (and to the depth you were displaying on the #365 sets) but whenever I try to go wide with my feet V'd-out (not even as wide or v-d as your widestance) I have an immediate straining feeling in my right buttock? It's like at the base or along my glute. No idea what's up, but my body very clearly doesn't appreciate the wide stance.

I feel like a wider stance & less depth is gonna be imperative if I ever want to hit 500 at a meet tho, so it's kind of aggravating.

Sounds like a hamstring issue. It shortens at the knee and stretches at the hip. If there's some tightness, it can make it difficult to hit depth without pain.

Probably something wrong with technique I guess? It's very dependant on the posterior chain too. If everything isn't perfect, I can't squat wide either. I think spreading the floor and reaching far back are the two most important things with a wider stance. Toes don't have to be flared either. I feel it hinder me if they're too flared. Also, don't think that you have to squat wide to hit 5 bills. That 365 is the narrowest I can go. My moderate stance is a foot width each out from that. I first squatted 6 with a moderate stance and am still fairly new to wide stance squatting. Go with what's strongest. That's what'll be best.

The whole hip tie-in/inner thigh/glute area needs constant upkeep with wide stance squats and/or deads.

I pull conventional, & like I said squat on the narrow & deep end of the spectrum for sure (that's what's strongest, easily). I play with sumo pulls like once in blue moon, nor do I ever do any kind of adductor work really. Could more sumo & adductor stuff alleviate any of this potentially? Or any generalized recommendations without knowing exactly what's going on?

Really appreciate the input here fellas. I can't give you rep right now, or I would!

Some video would go a long way here. It could be something very simple. Sumo isn't really something to dabble in since it is highly, highly technical.

I know I was having a similar problem if not the same and now that I pull sumo on my assistant days I have notice a bit of an improvement not sure if it's really related cause my routine has changed so much in the past month

Edit: sorry to jump in there seemed relevant

I don't have a smartphone but I'll see if I can drag the gf along next week & get some footage of what things look like if I open the stance up more. Thanks gents!

Look Kelly Sterrett's vid on internal rotation of the femur. This may solve the problem.

Hey Sean I'm reviewing a nitric oxide stack for MST in the supp logs section & I'm documenting the remainder of this Cube cycle there if you're interested at all:

Talking out loud here, sorry: Decided to stay on track with this training cycle and not reset. I'll PR second week of July. One week in July I'll be on leave with no lifting, so there will just be a **** around week after that and then roll into meet prep in August.

DB rows, 120 x 30, wtf?!?! You must be feeling good and strong. How's the shoulder, bubba?

Left AC joint doesn't feel as jacked and doesn't hurt, just doesn't feel stable. Right RC is getting stronger. It gets irritated if I slack off on thoracic mob/mfr. I took a month off of pressing after my meet and am just now getting into overhead dumbell work.

Good seein you around, bud.

Sounds good. I'd shoot that joint. Safe place for it. Should you need to repair the A/C, it's a pretty easy recovery as long as they don't need to cut off the distal clavicle.I need to go back to see how you did at the meet. Or you can give me the cliff's notes.Good to be back.

620/275/555, ditched 650 and red-lighted 300 for butt lift. Next meet is Oct 11.

Very nice. Let's get that shoulder mended so you can be benching 350 as I know you will.

Hope the shoulders improve, buddy. You got plenty of time.

if I can't get my shoulder repaired soon, I intend to start experimenting. I will be sure to let you know what I am doing and how it works. All legit.

Just watched Clint Darden use a car polisher in place of a foam roller. That's genious.

Yeah, totally brillioant. (Damn is that clever.)

Nothing that a few grand in gh & peps couldn't alleviate, Branch Warren-style.....

Yup! I'm on 2 units a day! It cut my healing time to almost 1/3.. Cause when I popped a blood vessel in my eye lifting, it healed in 4 days and doc said it would take up to 2 weeks!
Now I just gotta get over the mental fear!
Work in progress!
;)

I know it's late but with all the great advice you have given me, Sean, I feel it will be very beneficial to me to follow your log. Your numbers are very impressive. I look forward to your posts.

**** ya

Just got back from a yummy 90 min. Thai massage. It was couple's, so no happy at end, lol.

Lmao.

And it was the only one the hardware store has lol Felt great on the adductor and hamstring, the two big spots I have trouble loosening up sometimes

u seriously mash ur shít with a car polisher??? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard! I'm just not that big, the lil dollar store massagers work my chicken legs just fine! Haha

Was watching Clint Darden talk/demonstrate last night on it. My chiro uses a tool sometimes that's pretty much the same exact damn thing.

Yeah, really great idea. I am going to get one and have my gal blitzkrieg my hammies, lower back and posterior delts.Talk about rubbin one out, lol.

Thanks i don't know why but I was sitting on a bench at my mother-in-laws house and thought of that so I tried it and noticed my glutes want to tighten when I do it which I thought was odd but now I'm excited to try it lol

I know u seen my post but thanks again

Thank you for your service, fine sir.

I don't really exaggerate it or cue about it, but I just feel it happen if I screw in or spread.

The only cue I actively think about is big belly which often screws me I think, the ironworker Joe we have in our crew has been yelling at me to keep my elbows under the bar which really helps but I don't get the concept of spread the floor mybe I'm just dumb hope this cue may help with that

Spread the floor is a pretty good one, though screw my feet in works better for me. I was actually cued to flatten my feet out, which helped on my wide stance EQ squats. For spread the floor, get on tile or hardwood or smooth cement in your socks and get in your squat stance and make your feet slide out using your ass/hips. Or think of trying to put a rip in a carpet between your feet. You'll get it, it just takes awhile.
