Sean's Powerlifting Journey

My Reactive Slingshot came in. I was able to do push-ups with it so it's a bit more forgiving than the Titan Ram. Looking to incline press with it tomorrow.

Hey, what's goin on man? Didn't I read that you had a hefty squat? And easy is the goal!
I used to. I was rear ended in 2003 with my family stopped at a light by and old man going 65mph, didn't hit the brakes. Long story short I herniated a disk in my lower lumbar about 5 years ago, it didn't happen during the accident, but was due to it, at the time the most I had done for squats was 565 for 6. I blew out the disk while still warming up with 225. It sucked bad. I've been trying to stick with leg press ever since to avoid aggravating it. I've done some pretty good weight on that before, my best is 28 45s for 14 reps, knees to chest. I had a buddy pushing me that was pretty serious tho, Sean Maloney, or Quake from American gladiators. I've never pushed my legs as hard as when he trained me. I don't usually go over 24 45s now.

Damnnn sorry about the injuries. 565x6 is pretty damn awesome. Also cool as hell you lifted with an American gladiator lol

Well, welcome. Feel free to drop whatever training experience ya have!

Thanks, I have no existing pain, I did my own physical therapy for a while, I just avoid things like dead lifts or squats so I won't possibly injure myself again. I know those are two of your staples! Haha. I train for my physique anyways, so I can do plenty of movements to produce growth that don't put too much strain on my core. Sean was an awesome guy, we trained together for a little over a year, when he was a gladiator he was 6'2" 285lbs haha he taught me a lot of what I know, very knowledgable

Those chains didn't look like it got hard for you until the last inch you slowed a hair. Nice work Sean. Get the hip better!

Thanks Rob. 20lbs worth was probably left on the ground at lockout. Hopefully this overload will carryover to my lockout. It sounded cool at least!

Ideas for sumo strength off the floor? Throwing the suit on in 2 weeks. Thinking maybe some halted deadlifts? Block pulls?

Maybe just start stacking mats and find what height feels the most akward. Aside from just getting stronger legs and hips, maybe pull against some mini's on your speed/CAT/explosive whatever day.

Training in gear again?

Against bands on DE day it is. For a single ply deadlift only meet at USPA States Mar 29th

Do you normally fail on the floor?
Everytime, if it breaks, I make it.

Been working on form, got some cues from Dan Green that I just need to utilize better. Still weak off the floor.

If it's technical, it'll come with repetition. Modest deficits will help to get your hips into position and provide just enough of a difference to force you to pull harder. Anything over 1" tends to compromise form too much. This kinda goes against convention, but straps are a decent idea.

ok...I guess I walked into that one. The reason I asked was because the issue of grip was never brought up.

Smart A$$!!! Haha

I used them for rep work and heavy because the bar we have is not good or standard... I've done 585 w/ out. Not worrying about grip IMO lets you pull harder.

I agree 100%.
My grip is weak and I need to fix that but if i'm locked in with straps I can focus on technique so much better

Issue breaking the floor often a grip issue.
Don't think that's the case as I've held close to 7 no problem. The small deficits I plan to implement, thanks.

When I use straps for back day I def lift harder. It just allows me to push myself and focus on my back muscles instead of my grip. And it doesn't hurt your grip development, the Straps only really start to work when you start to slip anyways, you're still gripping just as hard. One of my old training partners always used straps and his forearms were diesel

Suit should help off the floor anyway, no? I like the idea of deficit sumo, though I don't think I'd never try them. I have to really wedge myself into position even when the bar is on the floor.

I did it off a plywood board once. That's probably as much as I could handle.

I'd have to go all Ed Coan width to do any deficit. I like the idea of working conventional to give the hip a break. My training partner did that very thing and she ended up pulling 380 for a 15lb PR. Now's the time where I try to talk her into pulling conventional from now on.

I have my wife do most of her DLing conventional and then she'll start doing sumo when she gets close to a meet.

You had me after the first "I have my wife do ..."

Thank ya germs.

One more "germ" giving you props for some sweet pulls with the monster links, brosac, notwithstanding the whining. ;)

Looking hawt!

And old man say, use straps if you want. You're sure as hell attuned enough to know if your grip is holding you back by pulling ample time without.

With my nerve issues, I have no choice. So fawk you. ;)

Welcome back fûcker!! Good to see ya.

And I do appreciate straps with rep work and when my hands are torn up. The grip on that Texas Deadlift bar is pretty damn impressive though and it's near impossible to lose your grip on it if you're over/under. I wear straps when I deadlift at work. It prevents me from letting the bar come down TOO fast and getting yelled at lol

The Reactive Slingshot is great for having an injury. It took just enough of the load, and I was still able to feel my pecs and shoulders doing some of the work. Definetly a good buy.
