Article: Myths Of Low Carb Diets

I approve of this article. As someone who loves carbs and does not experience fat or weight gain due to eating higher amounts of them because of my level of training, I do experience mental slow down after consuming. It took me a long time to realize what it was, or more likely, to be honest with myself as to what was doing it since I love my breads and pastas. Cutting my carbs in half and adding in more fat helped dramatically.

By mental slowdown, what do you mean exactly?

I mean like being aware of the fact that I feel brain fog and grasping for word/thoughts after a high carb meal. It just drains me. Never feel anything but energy and alertness after a fatty, low carb meal.

Now that you mention it, I do experience brain fog after lots of carbs. I guess I've just been used to it and never put two and two together.

Same here Brutha same here ;)

Not to mention extreme laziness.

Carbs and me just plain don't get along

An interesting read is a book called Grain Brain. This doctor really gets it. Cholesterol and fats are what we need (within reason and based on current health, of course) and are essential for proper cognitive and physical health. Carbs are not bad, but the abundance that we ingest them is actually affecting us in a negative way. I am not going to try to sway anyone, but I experience it personally, so that is why I agree with this article.

As little as possible. We eat clean at home, but I routinely have lunches with sales and executive types, so those are big, hearty type meals and I do my best. I will never follow a very strict diet because it is not reality and I would never stick to it, but will eat and prepare within reason.

Yeah when I started consuming 400 carbs recently I was always drained for an hour or so after,so I gotta afree with this

When you ingest high amount of carbs at one time all the glucose is absorbed and than sent through your bloodstream and not enough insulin is produced. Thats what causes the tiredness and lethargy after ingesting high amount of carbs. Like if someone guzzled down a ton of sugar they could likely go into a sugar coma. Your brain is very sensitive to high amounts of glucose.

Carb cycling and eating smaller frequent meals to keep glucose levels level are two ways. Plus, I am of the opinion that carb intake is overrated for bulking purposes. I have run a bulk every end of winter for the last 6-7 years and only up my carb intake a bit and I try to back load it so I am not consuming it all during the day in heavy amounts. I can put on 10-15 lbs in 2 months by simply increasing caloric intake heavier on the fat and proteins along with a modified workout.

See for me its just too hard to get those calories in unless I have my rice. I also get better pumps with high carbs..the one perk

Ok, so don't focus on simple carbs that are high in the glycemic numbers. Get in more complex carbs that break down slower. Trust me, I LOVE carbs, but I have been trying to be smarter about it in the last years and see the results.

Going low carb for me (below 50 grams) makes me feel dumb as rocks if I go for more than a day or two.

Makes you wonder about hundreds of years ago. The diet was basically low carb high fat and protein. Meat from kills, and carbs from various fruits and wheat. Maybe they were doing it right!

It takes about 10 days for your body to adjust to lc...i have been on 30 grams of carbs a day since sept (3) cheat meals.

i have lost a ton of fat....have gotten stronger....and energy is through the roof...i am hoping to compete later in the year as a masters lv2....

So say I just take in my body weight in carbs give or take 20 grams...what percentage of my diet should make up fats and protein? Should it be 50/50 or should I be getting more protein than fats. Right now I've been doing 35% fats 35 % protein and 30% carbs

Bro percents are useless. You need 1-1.5g/lb protein, .4-.5g/lb, and the rest carbs. You need to be on the side of the protein if your cutting.

Yea but the whole article is about low carb lol if the majority of my intake is from carbs it kind of negates the point of the article

Going to start cutting carbs and see how I feel. Starting out with ~150 a day, spread out 50/50/50. Coming from eating 250+ a day

Just because something isn't essential for your diet doesn't mean it's not beneficial. By that logic I should stop wearing shoes to the gym, because I don't need them for my workout.

That being said, I agree that we as a society eat too many carbs. Which is only one of the causes of our obesity epidemic. To say carbs are "toxic" though? I think that's a little bit of an overstatement. Making carbs out to be the "bad guy" is just excusing the people who choose to eat too much. It used to be fat, now it's becoming carbs. When will people just start blaming their own gluttony.

I think this is geared more towards people that have mind sets like most of us and understand at least basic nutrition needs and how things work- not the average Joe eating crap all the time.

When I was 300+ pounds, my gluttony was sweet stuff. Sugary things and the like.

Do you guys that feel bad after carbs have some sort of gluten issue? When I'm bulking almost 50 percent of my cals come from carbs and I feel fine.
