Article: Training For Tall Guys

Hmmm my height has never hindered me in the gym. At 6'6" I'm stronger, bigger, and way more cut than any of my friends, and one of the strongest dudes at my gym. 90% of my lifting is with free weights, and everything is executed with perfect form. I guess it just depends on your body type/genetics, because I see other tall guys who struggle with certain routines. I do heavy leg presses instead of squats though, since squats put way to much pressure on my knees. No problem doing strict form bicep curls with 90lb dumbbells or 150lb dumbbell chest presses. But then I've been lifting for 13 years too.. I've got tall friends who lift sloppy as f--- though.

I wish I came across this a few years ago. I was always lean at 6'4'' and now I am use to training but man to see this 4-5 years ago would have been a godsent. I agree that squats do stress my knees but mostly my back when I am trying to get extremely low. I also noticed that I am better at pressing dumbbells compared to barbells. Any reason for that? Is it mental?

I don't fall into your definition of tall but I don't consider myself short, I am about 6'1". My issue is more with my proportions. I have extremely long femurs and shins compared to my torso. My shins are 22', my femur is 23' and my torso is 16'. This makes squatting difficult as my center of gravity is too far behind me to keep from falling backwards. It also makes getting into proper dead lift position hard as my knees are much further forward than my shoulders. Apart from increasing my flexibility to that of a circus performer, the only way I can effectively train is to adopt a super wide sumo stance.
