My "Attempt at Westside" Log

You've never lived until you've smelled five hours worth of garbage bag sweat.

would a gda or insulin mimicker help you out at all after weighins for glucose uptake?

You were reading my mind, boss. I picked up some Na-R-ALA for after weigh ins. I'm quitting on the cut. I woke up at 230 and I don't feel like hurting myself. I just wanna relax today and tomorrow.

Not sure what you're used to using, but I always got good results from dandelion root and caffeine.

Yeah, MHP Xpel has Uva Ursi, Dandelion, Caffeine, et cetera. It's good. It didn't drop much weight, but it crushed my bloat.

4/5 Deadlift Party!

We got me, Lamonster, my buddy Ryan, and my other freakishly strong buddy Keagan and had a deadlift party. Just swift singles. Run up to the bar and pull. We each hit:

135
225
295
365
415
435
455
475

Then Ryan pulled 500. That rep was the single craziest display of brute force and ignorance I'd ever seen in my life. The bar drifted literally six inches away from him and he didn't even pull it back, he just kept going until he hit his knees and started hitching repeatedly until it went. He's a hockey player and could give a fu(k less if it wouldn't have gotten any white lights. Crazy.

Check the vids out. We're all buddies from wayy back and we're all 23-24 years old. I weighed 230, Ant weighed 205, Ry weighed 198, and Keagan weighs 175.

Note: that bar is crazy stiff and has no knurling left. It's older than everybody in this log. This was really cool to think that we're just a bunch of dudes who've known each other since we were toddlers and we stayed together and got freakin strong.

Although the name always gives me a good laugh.

Lol. Yeah, that's what a couple wrestling teammates in college came up with while we were stoned out of our gourds.
Unfortunately, it stuck.
Always the dumbest nicknames that stick, am I right?
I have a t-shirt that has that nickname plastered across the back. I'll wear it for the meet and upload a picture of it.

Weighed in at 232. That scale was ridiculously light. I would have stuck to my cut if I knew that.

I'm testing my limits as we speak. The chinese is winning, but I gave it my all.

The shirt before the sniglet. (Not a typo, that's what my coach called them.)

Sorry guys, no reception in the ballroom. Great day, had a blast. Bought an Inzer Rage, hung out and was in the 4th bench flight of 7.

Warming up, my bicep was tight like always. Got some capsaicin rub from a rep. Warmed up to 295 for two singles. Then it was time to go.

335 Opener-Smoked Just like we practiced. Very fast.

360 Second - Smoked even harder. 10# PR.

390 Third - Miss. Handoff was a little high and I brought it down very high. Lost tightness from bicep pain about an inch up. Got it to a 2-board and then my butt was in the sky.

Sat around for a couple hours, then it was time to pull. I was in the 5th deadlift flight. Warming up I felt like ass. Everything was slow and I was super nervous about opening up with 475.

475 - crushed it!

The bar was a beautiful deadlift bar. Whippy, and really bit down on the hands.

505 - Good. I got pitched onto the balls of my feet, but sat back and finished the 5# PR.

525- Real Good! Sat back and ripped it.

Saw a guy weighing 246 bench 775 and a guy weighing 264 bench 545 raw and pull 760. Many other impressive feats, but those two stand out.

Only got video of my last deadlift. The place was a madhouse during the bench press. Just a great frickin day. Will upload in a minute.

Third deadlift. Left a little on the platform, and I'm fine with it.

Is that double overhand with a new haircut?

Edit: the way it views on my phone looked double overhand at first lol

good job dude!! that looked like it could have been your first attempt! you ripped that

I'm glad you shaved your head lol need more baldies here

Shaved head and light beard adds a lot, man. There was a guy with a shaved head and a HUGE beard. Six foot, 205lbs, pulled 705. It's da beard, man! I'm used to a stiff bar with slick grip. The warmups were SO bad, man. I would've maybe gone 545 on deadlift, but getting thrown on the balls of my feet with 505 was nerve-wracking.

Nice work man. Congrats on some solid weight being moved around.

Thanks, Bolt. What a ****ing thrill. Such a great time. How's your cubing coming along?

Time to say thanks. From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate each and every one of you guys. Without you, I wouldn't have trained nearly as hard or had the accountability. This whole journey was a ton of fun and so very fulfilling. I encourage all of you to compete at some point. It does not matter if you think you're ready, you're already ready. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING like coming off of the platform and getting congratulated by many fellow brothers in iron. THIS HAPPENS NO MATTER WHETHER YOU BENCH 225 OR YOU BENCH 555. WE ARE ALL BROTHERS.

First of all, I have to thank Lamonster. He was my handler today, he's been my training partner for over a year, and more than all of that: Ant, you are a great friend. You're my golfing buddy, my fishing buddy, my drinking buddy, and my lifting buddy. And you know as much as anyone, that covers all the bases.

Sean, thanks for being in this log from the beginning. You're a good dude, a smart dude, a strong dude.

Ryan, thank you for so much. Programming help, technique tips, and most of all for telling me what I need to hear on here, and not just what I want to hear. You have a keen eye and encyclopedic knowledge of all things strong. I know you'll smash your meet next week. We're all pulling for you.

All of you guys really mean the world to me and without your support, today would not have been nearly as fulfilling. Bolt, Jim, especially Rob, and all the other guys following, vocal or silently. Thank you. Even my boss came out to see me lift on his one day off this week. He was there from the first bench until 760 crashed back to the floor. That's 8 hours of spectating. He loved every minute. This process really opened my eyes to how many people truly are there for me, I couldn't ask for more.

Going great...feeling pretty awesome lately.

Hell yeah. I like the submaximal nature of the cube. Keeps the body in good working condition. I like to make my variations harder so that the meet lifts are easier. For instance, I usually deadlift with a very stiff and slick bar. It made a world of difference yesterday. I couldn't break 515 from the floor in training, but 525 jumped yesterday. If the top end needs work later, I'll do some rack work. It's all coming along.

That #525 looked like a warmup dude. Anyway good lifting and good progress.
I would have bet you had #545 but hey, next time.

Can I ask or could you PM me, who these other guys were and where did this meet take place?

I'd understand if you do not want to disclose specifically.

Thanks, man. I would've taken a bigger third, but 505 drifted on me a little bit and pushed me onto the balls of my feet. I had no idea that a good bar helps that much though!

I competed in the Pittsburgh Monster Bench and Deadlift meet. The winner of the bench press was Chris Carson of South Side Barbell in New Castle, PA. He weighed 246 and smoked 755 and 775 and almost hit 8. The biggest raw lifter was Steve Bly, Jr. He benched 545 raw and deadlifted 742.5 and 760. Both of those guys broke and then rebroke meet records. The geared deadlifter was a guy from Greensburg, PA whose name escapes me, but he was a lanky 205 pound dude who ripped 675 and then 705 off of the floor. There were a lot of very strong dudes there. There was $200 apiece for best bench geared and raw and the same went for the deadlift. The coefficients for men and women were determined by the Schwartz/Malone formula.

Be sure to follow my next log as I train for Strongest Man in Pittsburgh on May 11!

Squat test today. If you haven't already, check out "Herderdude takes on the strongest man in Pittsburgh to judge my lifts as I put the final phases of my time with the Cube in order.
