Eat Junk, Still Make Gains?

IIFYM. :)

Oh LOL.. is it true that if it fits your macros you can eat donuts and pizza all day?

Some people can, some people can not.
From a health standpoint it is not wise. From body comp, you'll hear 50/50 debate.

Know the question wasn't from me, but I know people that get away with it.

I'm not the leanest around, that's not my goal as of yet (to be super shredded), I'm just trying to drop body fat levels. I try and keep a solid diet, not to over do carbs, make sure I get enough protein... But when it's time to enjoy life I don't hold back.... I just don't over do it. :)
Or if I know a nice dinner is coming up @ night that may involve some brews, fries, what ever I'll watch what I eat during the day. :)

Eat pop tarts all day and get shredded, as long as it fits your macros haha!

I got a thing for the s'mores...
& yeah I was hella vascular @ 20 years old. :)

You can eat what you like it all depends how often you eat bad, if you want to look good and feel great, you need to eat good. Just make sure you hit the gym harder after that Friday night takeaway! I have found after working out more I don't want **** food because I am only cheating myself.

The best time to cheat is around your work outs/lifting days.

I'm glad I read this thread

now I can go to five guys and not feel like a fat fuk!!

I made this thread cause I know guys who do this.
It's hard to get there but maybe it's easy to maintain.

I work with a guy that will plow through deserts like no other but he stays single digit BF consistently..he makes up for it with training

I notice if I kill a pizza or couple burgers and fries one night, the day after I actually have an awesome workout

In terms of your short-term physical goals, IIFYM is a great system.

In terms of long-term internal health and longevity, I think we may be able to reason that pop tarts daily aren't such a great idea, even if you retain a 6-pack in the process.

To an extent, yes. There are some forgotten elements, though, such as mineral consumption, fiber, etc. that also play into the equation.

To me, the main thing to take from it is that there is far too much brolore and dogma when it comes to nutrition that if something doesn't fit within the tight box of "proper nutrition," then it's automatically disqualified. For example, I get many, many odd looks when I say that oatmeal is a bad idea because it is nearly universally accepted as a staple for BB'ing.

I know that I keep picking your brain, but why do you think oatmeal is a bad idea??

Damn Quakers.

On that note, I feel like the IIFYM thing should be in moderation. As in eat relatively clean all day, get your protein vitamins minerals fruits veges etc then eat that desert and ice cream. As long as it fits your macros then, I see no reason why there would be a problem. It's pretty obviously that it's not possible to just eat ice cream and maintain gains for an extended period of time. Moderation is key.

Hahaha, that's crazy I wish I could eat pop tarts and stay lean.

Highly acidic and genetically engineered with high levels of lectins and phytic acid.

Care to share some more common bb'ing foods that are a bad idea and why they are?
I for one try to eat "healthy" for the most part, but usually have pizza or some other "junk" the night before an ME session to get some extra cals and bloat.

Mainly oats and brown rice due to the acidity and lectins.

Ha those are my main carbs! Killing my diet...what would be better options?

Sweet potatoes & quinoa

I respect Rodja a lot, he's a very smart guy but a lot of people use these two carbs with no problems.

I can tell a difference between stove top oats (what i presume Rodja is mainly referring to) and steel cut oats, the latter being much better. Although, I understand where his points are coming from.

Try them out for yourself and see how you react.

You certainly don't have to fight me to get me to eat sweet potatoes over brown rice and oats :D

He's speaking more from a well-being, nutritionalist point of view. As in, you might not notice any effects of eating brown rice or oats, but lots of things in the body go 'unnoticed' that can still cause harm.

Me too:(

Those are my main carbs as well. Will have to do some research on this. I would imagine that the steel cut oats are a better option..

Potatoes and non-brown rices. The "brown" part is the bran and germ, which contain the anti-nutrient portion and decrease the pH.

Guessing wheat pasta is a NO NO as well??

I'll be honest, I eat like CRAP some days, I'm talking fast food 3 times, large pops, chocolate, etc etc, and drink in excess once a week (lately) and if you have been following my progress you will see I have been making very quality gains still.
I usually do end up eating fast food 5 days a week though lol...
Say I end up getting a Tendercrisp with fries and a root beer, I try to "make up" for it by eating a very clean meal or two later, usually little to no carbs.
And that Slin Sane helps a bundle ;)

Could be that he eats just right for him - it's not so much about macros than it is about calories, timing of caloric consumption, personal characteristics re nutrition, etc.; and whilst genetics may play some role, it's also about training the body, etc. After all, there ARE anomalies to the "nutrition is the key to achieving your body goals" rule - I of all people personally know that; I eat what I want when I want (what most others call "cheating" and "junk") and it's my TRAINING that determines my physical results, not my nutrition. That said, what I do works for me and I don't recommend it to others, and chances are, he's likely very much the same. Also note, that just because one eats at fast food places, doesn't mean that everything they eat is Unhealthy, since many places have "healthier" options now. Regardless of what he does, you should be more concerned with yourself and finding what works specifically for YOU re YOUR goals and needs.

Wish I could get away with this. :)

Almond butter is far better. I'm curious as to why there is such a high level of peanut allergies these days?

I honestly couldnt tell you. All I know is I feel better eating almond butter compared to peanut butter. But there is high trend of allergies these days.

I make my own almond butter because its so expensive here, about $10 a jar. And the jars are tiny.

Peanut butters may contain traces of soy and gluten and some people may be intolerant to those. Food intolerances are also very common because people eat the same stuff year after year and their gut health is generally bad. Also, peanuts contain a mold that is a known carcinogen. Don't know if that is what makes people 'allergic', though.

I eat clean probably about 70-80% of the time but there are times when I say f-ck it and eat a pizza or a big ass burger and fries I'm not super lean but if u look at my pic got no problems with gains and certainly ain't no fatty

It makes no sense mate.Junk foods are not good for health. They can't compete with natural diet plan.Only workout is not enough for maintaining health and fitness. You need to improve your diet. The combination of both make difference. You should motivate your friend about it.

I find that when I'm taking AP and Prime, I don't have to worry so much. I aim for at least 1g of protein/lbs I weigh, make sure I take EVOO in my night protein shake, and just eat in moderation. I honestly am pudgy in the belly, but after 12 days of these products, I am losing it. (I had comparable results in high school)
