Shoulder makes GRINDING sound

I noticed recently that my left shoulder makes a grinding noise when I do either a shrugging motion or when I roll it forward or backward. It's NOT the sound of cracking, as when your joints or knuckles occasionally crack. It sounds more like bone rubbing against bone and it's really disturbing.

I have never had a shoulder injury that I know of. I'm 39, I've worked out since I was a teenager -- though I've been way more serious about in the last 3 years than before.

It does NOT hurt, but everything about that sound just says BADNESS. I can't help but worry that something has broken down or is about to break down and I'll start my off my 40s with one of those never-goes-away shoulder injuries.

Does anyone know what this is or what I should do or not do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

This is really interesting if the pain continues I would go see a specialist. You don't want to take any chances

The sound is called crepitus and it's from wear and tear on the joint....it's not serious in and of itself but can be a warning sign of future osteoarthritis or tendonits

Crepitus? As in decrepit? That doesn't sound good at all. But as I said above, so far it doesn't hurt, but the idea that I'm in some kind of pre-arthritic state really scares me. Unfortunately, I'm currently without insurance, so a doctor's visit isn't feasible. But I will definitely go and see a sports medicine doctor as soon as I'm able to.

I have ordered some GLC2000 (using the Super Human Radio discount) as there is some evidence that glucosamine helps repair cartilage breakdown. I figure it can't hurt.

idk if this is the same thing but i had something like that in my elbows, i started taking fish oil to help lube my joints and have never had a problem again. Worth a try tho?

my shoulder started out that way also and then i started getting pain the end result was a cortisone shot the orthopedic told me i turned my shoulder into a muscle bearing joint and if i keep it up i will need surgery f-that im too young for that $h* so im changing my workout routine, conditioning excercises is what i am starting mon.
