Getting Tired Really Fast

To give you a background, I used to train with the Air Force Reserve Officers' training corps of our university. We would do hardcore training (running from 4am-6am + intense strength training from 6am-9am) every Saturday. We would also train with our 5 kg. rifles everyday, this would include running with the rifle lifted above our head, etc. At the same time, I would go to the gym every other day to do cardio and strength train with my personal trainer. I also play basketball once a week.

However, when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, I was advised by my doctor to lighten my exercise (since I was having palpitations). I decided to quit my training at the corps. I would go to the gym, but instead of doing 2-3 hour sessions, I reduced it to 1 hour. I also stopped playing basketball since I didn't have the time (due to academics).

Now, I noticed that I am no longer as energetic as I used to be. When I go on the treadmill, I can only go as far as 5 for the speed and for about 15-20 minutes. I can't go longer since I get really tired and short of breath so fast. My concern is, I want to go back to my physical fitness before. How can I rebuild it again? I know I can't do it all of a sudden, so I need advice on how I should slowly increase my activity.

Thank you!

It's not that hard to set up a progression system if that's what you're looking for. Start with a training volume that you know you can handle and try increasing the volume a little every week or so. If it starts getting to be too much, just ease off. Of course take rest periods as you think you need them. As far as what you're doing (jogging, biking, ect..), just stick with what you can handle. Better to ease into anything than jump right in and make sure not to overexert yourself unnecessarily. You should be just fine.

Peace

Sounds like a problem I used to have. Your heart being a muscle needs to be conditioned before you can train properly again without strain after 30 minutes.

In my family HIGH LDL levels are genetic. So, I really watch my diet and avoid oily cholesterol dense food. Clearing your arteries is very important. Niacin 1g before bed and plant sterols/Fish oil in the morning to combat the negative lipid profile i'm blessed with.

In order to get past speed 5 you will need to do more intense bursts of cardio and steady pace walking for 30 minutes a few times per week to slowly build your heart conditioning and circulation back.

Also, my workouts feel completely uninspired if I do not CARB UP an hour to 30 minutes before my workouts. You need sustained energy, so give your body what it wants or else it will respond by slowing you down in the gym both mentally and physically.

IMO, forget NO boosters and Pre-workout supps. The BEST pump I get in the gym is when I load up on a ton of rice. Muscles just suck that right up and fill out before I enter the gym. Its a great feeling.

Lastly, sleep is crucial. It will have a big impact on your training and if you don't allow your body to recover from the day before then you will suffer the following day. Sleep becomes ever more important as you age since your body's regeneration slows over time.

Lastly, use your hyperthyroidism to your advantage. It will lessen your ability greatly to become fat, so BULK up with foods. You'll still stay lean, don't fear the rice and sweet potatoes! Chicken and rice chicken and rice every 3 hours, and your workouts will improve night and day. BTW dont forget your multi vitamin

Hope this helps a little.

But I'm trying to avoid rice since I'm trying to lose weight. Also, I have been taking medicine for my hyperthyroidism. I lost weight really fast before taking meds, but when I was prescribed with medicine, I gained my weight back (or even more) really fast. I've been going to the gym more often lately to work on my cardio. I don't know what's going on with me, but after a few weeks, I got sick. This happens when I work out every day. Maybe I need to lessen the load?

White rice maybe, but brown rice has a lower GI rating. And I'd talk to the doc about a milder dose of you Hyperthyroid drugs. Tell him your experiencing negative weight gain.

Tell us what he is giving you. Maybe we can help better.

If you are feeling rundown or low on energy, might I suggest you try Bazi? Many people report improved energy, concentration, and focus in as little as twenty minutes. No need to wait months to feel the benefits.

Oh yes, I heard brown rice is better - it's just a whole lot more expensive than white rice here. But I guess I'll have to insert it into my budget. :D My doctor is actually giving me the lowest doze for my hyperthyroidism since it's already under control (5 mg of Tapdin, once a day). Maybe I just really need to change my diet plus exercise regularly since I'm gaining weight fast after everything went back to normal.

Well basically your drug blocks the thryoids ability to sythesize Iodine (such as the iodine from table salt) into Thyroxine (T3, T4).

If you feel it is working too well, then maybe up table salt intake? Or take an iodine supplement.

The key to not allowing negative weight gain would be avoid Sugars and Simple Carbs.

I buy brown rice from Success, yes its more expensive than white but no so bad that it is unaffordable.

Any of these drugs will interact with Tapdin:
* Acenocoumarol
* Anisindione
* Dicumarol
* Phenindione
* Phenprocoumon
* Warfarin

Tapdin has an ability to lower White Blood Cell Count which can account for some Anemia and increased tendancy to become ill. (My solution? Get on some Anadrol-50! :p jk jk)

It also has an ability to place strain on the liver which they say attributes a little of the weakness you may be experiencing.

Talk to your doc about this next time you see him/her
In the mean time, try taking a multi and up your clean carbs.

My doctor never gave me any supplements that I can take! He didn't even say that it would increase my tendency to become sick. No wonder I have been really prone to illness ever since I started taking medicine. I'll definitely buy myself multivitamins (is Centrum okay?) and will probably talk to my doctor about supplements I can take.
