Cholesterol Issues

My overall cholesterol is high and my doctor wants me to start 20mg of a statin drug. I really don't want to start any drugs because I think they are natural way of lowering.

My total cholesterol is about 243
Bad Cholesterol is high
Good is Normal
triglycerides are normal

Can you give me some advice?

Thanks

Eating oats can reduce your cholesterol if you eat them daily, fiber in general will help. Polycosinol is a natural substance that can reduce your bad cholesterol. Watching your diet is always a good way to lower it too.

whats a normal day of dieting or eating look like for you?

eating pretty clean...
the DR said that i produce too much based on my family history.
I will get my numbers tomorrow

My cholesterol has always been normal, then a little over a year ago I started eating ice cream and/or frozen yogurt late at night around midnight... well, it went up to 256. My Dr. told me to eat oatmeal and clean up my diet - 256 scared me.

I jumped back on policosanol, sesamin, eatting cleaner, and exercising more regularly with cardio additions. My cholesterol dropped down to 182 in like 3-4 months and has remained around there ever since.

The 256 scared me because my roommate had a similar situation a few years ago, except he didn't make the necessary changes and eventually had a heart episode that required angioplasty... I don't want to go through that.

I really don't want to have any heart problems...

My Results

Total 233
Triglycerides 135
Direct HDL 55
LDL 151
VLDL 27
HDL RISK FACTOR 4.2

He did not want me to go on any medicines but want me to start a Niacin regiment

Senor, your total is 201.

Cycle support has what you need. 2 scoops for a month, change your diet so your actually eating healthy, no cheat meals. Then get re-tested.

the numbers are hardley bad at all, but i would run cycle support (not the RYR free one) its a statin and can help lower your numbers.

if you do niacin get NON FLUSH niacin.

Red yeat rice is a good way to combat the bad cholestral (spelling)

Its my understanding that all Red Yeast Rice sold in the US has had the active component removed per FDA regulations. If this is true, is there any reason left to take it anymore??

If your LDL if high then that means that your overall cholesterol levels are high. Lipoproteins are made of more than just cholesterol there's also proteins phospholipids and triglycerides. LDLs always contain more cholesterol than HDL and HDL contain more protein. That being said;

I'd stop eating cholesterol through your daily diet, because your body makes 800-1500 mgs daily and through diet you might get 200 mg. Therefore dietary cholesterol is unnecessary. Also eat oats because the soluble fiber traps cholesterol and is excreted with the fiber.

When calculating a total cholesterol level, the LDL (Low density lipoprotein), HDL (High density lipoprotein), and VLDL (Very low density lipoprotein) are all added together to get your total serum cholesterol level. It all does add up to 233. ;)

Your LDL is definitely right on the border line of being high. I can tell you that an HDL of 55 is very good for someone who is even on statin medications. Having your HDL in that range does help to negate some of the bad from your elevated LDL. I will tell you that family heredity for elevated cholesterol is a very bad risk factor in the end though.

I would definitely suggest starting to make those changes in your diet, while adding in some omega-3 and niacin, then get it rechecked.

Given that you have a family history for it, i'd get it checked fairly regularily. Your diet and supplementation regimen may very well help keep it in a therapeutic range. If not, statin therapy may be in cards later on. Cholesterol is definitely something you want to keep in check, especially those with a family history. Its risk factor for the develpment of heart disease is very significant if not monitored and controlled even early on.

Good luck brother! :)

Ya, he didnt include that the first time. So I just added LDL/HDL together.

Red Yeast Rice with CoQ10 (as the RYR reduces CoQ10 in the body so you need to add as a supplement to counteract) has helped reduce overall cholesterol levels in my case by ten percent over a two month period. The active element in RYR acts essentially as a vegetable statin. There is a lot of on line research available re RYR. Also- add Cinnamon to your diet. Cinnamon has recently been studied and even recommended by the Harvard School of Medicine as an alternative for lowering cholesterol. A quarter teaspoon daily of high quality Cinnamon mixed into a smoothy along with a half cup of raw oatmeal and a banana (for potassium) should help you out.

I forgot to mention in my original post that Garlic has also proven to be a good supplement to include in your diet if you want to lower your cholesterol levels. Vitacost.com has a great NSI Garlic supplement that is very powerful yet does not give you bad breath. I take with my evening meal.

One final comment- Caffeine and Alcohol both play a part in your overall cholesterol levels. I was very surprised to find that the two cups of French Press Dark Roast was elevating my cholesterol levels (along with a couple of Martinis at happy hour). Once I cut out the coffee, went to Green Tea and skipped the cocktails- I saw significant additional improvement.

Thanks for the info

I've dodge all the other family health problems like HBP and Diabetes with a change in my diet about 4 years ago...

QUESTION does the Life Support on NP has RYR?

Yes.

But cycle support gives you twice as much of everything per serving, for only $8 more.

no. reduce carb intake except vegtables and nuts. Eat more omega-3. There is no link between saturated animal fats and high cholesterol. Insulin is the culprit.
