dextrose was commonly used to help spike insulin levels but it is not needed. i prefer creatine in my shake followed by a good meal shortly after. not a big fan of the post workout carbs like dextrose or waxy maize but you are more than welcome to use any of them.

You can spike insulin without using sugar or waxy maize starch or whatever else is the current fad. You don't need an immediate spike of insulin, you could use oats too and that would be a slower insulin increase as opposed to sugar spike.
