Quest for Success vol. #1

day 41 - 8/15/08 - First Big Tourny out of Two

Well today was the clay court championship tournament that I had decided to play in at the last minute basically. Funny thing about it being, I hit for the first time on clay just this past week, haha. Good surface for me though...I hit well on it and I enjoy it very much. Easier on the ankles and knees than hardcourts and a little slower also. I hit with a lot of topspin and slice so this type of court favors my game.

Unfortunately, that was not enough for me to advance far today. In the 2nd round I lost to a very good competitor from Philadelphia in straight sets. I played him tough and in many games we had multiple Deuce's, but I lacked closing power against him and he put away quite nicely. I double falted 3 times to his 1, and I definitely had about double his unforced errors...but again, he was a very good opponent. The MOST important thing to me was that I did not lose or falter because of conditioning. That's a huge step for me since last season in a few tournaments I lost because I was just very out of shape and tired.

I am happy with the way in which I played, and i'm not upset about the loss in the least bit. I hope that he goes on further in the tournament and now I have a week to prepare for my grass court nationals in Rhode Island at the Tennis Hall of Fame!

We leave for Rhode Island on the 25th of this month. The first installment of the "quest's for success" ends on the 24th officially. I will start installment #2 when I return home from that tourny. I have 9 days to come down another 5 lbs to reach my goal. However, I feel i've already met my goal for this log as I am moving much faster, I feel much better, and I have a great deal of physical changes to relay in the last 40-50 days! Til tomorrow...

day 42 - 8/16/08

Another good day. I was in a good mood knowing that I had off from work again...so the rest of the day just kind of followed suit. I did a few sets of planks, side planks, and horse poses...and then did a few select movements from Pink:It's the new black before hitting the courts. Practiced for about 1.5 hours today, making sure my buddy Shawn ran me around a lot. I wanted to try and improve my movement from a standstill forward position, to sprinting to my sides. This is where I found the most trouble at my last tournament. I must have gotten too used to hitting doubles during the usta season :(

Nutrition was solid today...lots of protein, minimal garbage intake...almost no useless carbs or fats. Weigh in tomorrow morning!!

day 43 - 8/17/08

Well the weigh in was awkward. Again as i've said time and time again, I am seeing very positive body composition changes...however, my weight went up another lb. Odd...but not really a loss for me. I know my target for next sunday was 205lbs....but right now at 211, I feel great, look great, am moving faster than ever, much more agile, and very confident. I would like to get to about 209 by next sunday...that would make this whole log perfect for me. The scale does not own me though...I already feel as though success was mine for this time frame!

I changed up my usual Renegade 50/50 today a little bit. I didn't really make any variation with the 50 pushups, but for the situps instead of just doing them normally, I took a 4kg medicine ball and right before sitting up I would thrust it into the air and then sit up. once I was sitting I would catch the med ball and twist to my left and then to my right and lay back. That was 1 rep. It was pretty awesome and activated a lot of muscles in my body all at once. Otherwise...that was really my only workout except for some Rx Holds as well as Core Holds.

Nutrition was awkward but it was my long day so i've been awake about 22 hours. It's always hard to track nutrition on those days. Starting when I wake up I will be keeping track of all I eat for the next month or so while logging a Controlled Labs product. I will run "Quest for Success vol. #2" alongside the log.

yah man...it's pretty awesome.

for a cut I have figured out that my calorie intake should be around 2700 which would roughly make 6 meals of 450 cals. This comes close enough that it leaves room for something else later also :)
 
day 44 - 8/18/08

Very good day. I kept track of everything I ate, but unfortunately I am very tired and need to get some rest, so I will not post that info until tomorrow. I do however want to post on my workout for the day since it was an interesting one :)

Upon waking I went ahead and did my Renegade 50/50 as well as doing Renegade Rx1, Rx2, and Rx3 holds (30 sec each, 2 circuits each leg). After this I was somewhat pressed for time so I went and showered and got my stuff together and left for my girlfriends house. She has a "beach" **see also: lake with sand** by her house that we took a walk to so I figured why not bring my new agility ladders with me just in case I had some free time to burn. Well...I had some free time :)

With a 15 foot agility ladder I did 2 sets of the following (in the sand) :

normal running
both feet in before one foot leaves
side to side running
both in side to side
slalom side to side
jump squat rung to rung
burpee for each rung

By the end I was pouring out sweat. It was awesome.

Nutrition was very solid all day long.

day 46 - 8/20/08

A pretty good day yesterday. Sorry for no update last night. I was really tired and wanted to get some rest. I was coming off my overnight shifts for the week so I woke myself up at 1pm after going to bed at 9am. The reason being that today I work at 2pm so I had to get to bed as early as possible last night. I hate my job :)

I was exhausted when I woke up so I skipped out on the 50/50 so that I could focus on my tennis for the day. Since my tournament is next tuesday already, I want to get on court as much as possible. I ended up on court for 3 hours straight yesterday playing 1 singles set and 4 doubles sets. I won the singles set and split the doubles sets 2-2.

Nutrition was solid, but I didn't eat ALL that much because I was only awake for 11 hours.

day 47 - 8/21/08

Good day today for the most part. Nutrition faltered once because we took my girlfriend's daughter to the zoo before work and literally the most nutritious thing to eat there was a burger...so that's what I had. otherwise totally clean.

Woke up and did a 50/50 to get the blood flowing, felt real good. I wanted to take it kind of light today because my right ankle feels a little sore from tennis. With my big tournament this coming tuesday, I didn't want to do anything that could really injure it. After getting home from work I did some Renegade Pink:It's the new black before posting this. It was nice to stretch out a bit since it's been probably about a week since i've done it.

Like I said earlier...the dreaded zoo burger hurt my nutrition for the day, but I think I leveled it out towards the end. Felt pretty good all day aside from the sore ankle.

1. I was always told that you should do what you want to do regardless of money...just as long as you were proud of what you were doing, and leaving a mark on the world. I am neither proud nor happy nor am I making good money nor am I leaving a mark on the world. It is a pointless career for a pointless person. That person isn't me :)
 
day 48 - 8/22/08

A pretty good day yesterday. I knew I was going to be short handed and managing alone so I didn't do much before going in (and i'm glad I didn't). I was right and we got rocked at work real bad. I ended up staying an hour late just to catch the next shift up before heading home last night. It's been a real busy week there and with my tournament coming up on monday, I just want to be rested and healthy going in.

Nutrition was good except there was a long period of time that I couldn't get anything to eat. Being so busy at work, time just seemed to slip my grasp. I ate well when I did eat though.

haven't been around much. I'm hoping that your kettlebell classes start picking up. I know State College has nothing like that. hint hint... if you need a pupil come up and teach me! lol.
 
haha aw man if it was any closer I really would. That drive is deep from here though...and Notre Dame's contract with Penn State ended already so I couldn't even double up and catch the game ;)

If I ever have to go out towards that area, I will be sure to get in touch with you first and we can meet up. I am looking into doing some demo stuff for MST, so it's definitely a possibility!

day 49 - 8/23/08

Well...today was my last day for installment #1 of the Quest for Success. My final weigh in will be tomorrow morning and since I didn't take any measurements for the beginning of this log, I will skip that and take some at the beginning of installment #2. 7 weeks of #1 and I have to say, I feel great. I may not have lost the exact poundage that I wanted to...but I feel like I did. I am faster, I am more agile, I am stronger, and I am a more fierce competitor whether it be on the tennis court or anywhere else in life. My confidence is up...and that is key.

I had a very good day today! Here is my workout from the day. Note that for the first time in about 5 months I did DB curls. I did them mainly just for shock treatment of my biceps.

Renegade 50/50 (situps done with a 4kg medicine ball)
DB shrugs - 3x10
DB Curls - 3x10 *each arm*
BB Bent Over Row - 3x8
KB Swing - 2x10 *each arm*
KB Power Clean - 2x10 *each arm*
KB Power Snatch - 2x10 *each arm*

A very good workout. I felt great throughout it all and I didn't want to stop. I couldn't be happier with it.

Nutrition was totally on point today. Only problem being again that work was insanely busy and I may have eaten well under my target caloric intake for the day. I still feel good and strong...so i'm not going to worry.

Okay so just for reference, final weigh in had me down 7lbs. That is a few lbs off where I wanted to be, but still a success granted the underlying goals all achieved.

I was going to post after pics, but I think I am going to wait til we get into Rhode Island tomorrow and take some from the pools and beaches and tennis tournament :)

Have a great 4-5 days everyone...can't wait to post some pics :)

Yeah I post here only occaisionally due to well I will not say...... but it is a solid board with solid members........ I have to comeover here every once in awhile because the other board gets bogged down and slow........good to see you are progressing.... thanks for the support about my dog..... it was hard!:sad:

Yeah I can imagine it was pretty tough for you, especially with your son on the search for him all the while. Sucks.
