"Combat" Hapkido

Anyone knowledgable about this MA?

I was talking to a guy who is a "4th Dan" black belt. I'm not sure who "Dan" is, but it seemed interesting. I've been interviewing strikers for a instructing position at my new MMA facility, but everyone seems to be into hapkido. I'm looking more for muay thai or boxing instructors. Got the BJJ covered at least.

At one point I called it hapkido, and he corrected me. "Combat" hapkido. "Ah, yes." I replied...

I think I've heard my cousin talk about a 4th degree don from his kempo days. You don't want to mess with the godfather.
It looks like combat hapkido is still a selfdefense, which would probably be inpractical for sport fighting.
So unless he has fought in the ring I would stick with the sport combat styles.

don = degree of black belt. i took hapkido for many years. it is a form of martial arts mixed of korean and japaneese styles. it is like of mixture of judo, jujitzu and taekwondo (i cant spell sorry)
hapkido also does a lot of pressure point/ point striking, throws, chokes, ect. a very good martial art.

Are there any MMA fighters who use hapkido techniques? Just curious.

that is a good question, i dont follow fighting really anymore at all. scorpion from mortal combat uses hapkido!

If this was for me, I was just joking around...lol.

Yeah Hapkido is self defense oriented. The more unique techniques are the standing joint manipulations. Kinda what you'd see in Steven Seagal movies - not practical for MMA but a helluva lotta fun when someone grabs you.

Like MM11 said there are also throws, strikes, and chokes but these are generally not taught in a sport setting.

Just because it ain't found in MMA doesn't mean it don't work...necessarily. Half the **** I learned in Krav Maga is not allowed in MMA, and the same goes for hapkido: joint locks and breaks, spinal manipulation, etc.

A good amount of joint locks in Hapkido are illegal in MMA due to twisting the fingers of your aggressor.

Sarcasm? :) It's true, MMA cut through a lot of the crap in martial arts. But I guarantee you if the MMA rules were removed, Roman-style, you'd see every single MMA guy doing hapkido/krav/jjj/ad lib techniques right and left (like eye gouges, neck breaks, finger breaks, biting, etc). In fact, it's safe to say that if I get in a real street fight, I'd be looking to use every technique banned in the UFC. :p

I guess it depends on if you want to spend life in prison, or just get off because you were defending yourself. I don't really like hurting people...

You can't really make that distinction when someone is trying to take your life; face it, any assault on the street can end in death, and you need to go in with that mentality. Even if you know (and you never KNOW) there are only fists involved, you can still be easily killed. If I am afraid for my life, and running is not an option*, I am going to peruse the 'illegal in MMA' handbook, and use those techniques extensively, to enable my escape and/or continuing to live.

It has nothing to do with liking to hurt people, and everything to do with defending myself, my loved ones, or the innocent around me. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

*I will always run, if possible, because of what I'm saying here: every real fight has the potential to become deadly, and I'd rather not get into that. If I can run, without leaving others in danger, I'll do so.
