Hughes vs Alves @ UFC 85

Well, with the champs fighting once a year it seems, it's impossible to have one every time. I don't really understand parts of the UFC's business model. Why not have the fighters fight 4 times per year if they remain uninjured and are up to it? Another thing I don't get is: why are there fewer events this year than last? Last year there were like 12 events and maybe 4-6 UFNs. They might hit 4 UFNs, but seem to be on pace for 9-10 events.

I disagree on an event needing a title fight though. Two years ago this would have been considered one of the best UFCs ever. They used to have 2 interesting fights per card it seemed.

In all fairness, this event has gone to sh!t because of injuries. It could have been really good, but the bug has bitten this card hard. Champs should fight 3x/year so there would be one of every card with two on several others. Rampage should have fought in April, but TUF messed that up (which was a terrible idea, Dana). Now the same will happen with Nog.
 
Yeah, Nog really doesn't have anyone to fight though. The HW class is empty. I guess with a win Werdum could be considered in contention.

You're defintely right about Page and Forrest. The LHW div is stacked and it was put on hold for way too long.
 
Discretionary spending is way down in this depressed economy. The UFC probably believes that they can't sell as many PPVs this year as last, which also causes issues with fighter retention and morale if their stable isn't staying fairly active/paid.

They've cut a fair amount of fighters over the past 3-4 months and then there is the Couture dispute...

Actually in the past years the events were higher quality. There used to be maybe 7 or 8 events a year, but they had higher quality fights. The new cards have been getting worse and worse. They know they can put out **** for a card and retards will still buy it because MMA is "cool" right now. UFC 84 is an exception. Back in the day they had to try harder because MMA wasnt mainstream and they were also competing with Pride.

I think 85 is pretty damn good, and agree with Jas about a few years back the events being sh*t. I don't feel like digging and listing some of the horrendous cards, but their were some stank a$$ cards a few years back.
 
My guess is that the younger opponent, Alves will win by submission, Hughes is still a great champ but with all champs younger blood will make their way to the top and knock the champ of their thrown.

Just my opinion though. We've all seen the crazy things that can happen in MMA. Put your chin in the wrong place at the wrong time and it's nighty night...that is, unless you're Cabbage Correira.

Alves by sub? I don't know about that, but like you said anything is possible.

Cabbage got KO'd by Tank Abbott, just saying.

There were some good ones though too. I dont feel like digging either, but off the top of my head UFC 40 comes to mind. Some of the newer ones are horrible. The one with Rashad vs. Bisping was a joke. UFC 83 was also a pretty bad card. We'll agree to disagree on 85.
 
I don't think people are giving Hughes enough credit. I think there are only 2 WW that can beat him, GSP and BJ. Some people say Koscheck or Fitch could give him a run b/c they are better wrestlers, but I think Hughes is a better MMA wrestler. I guess we will find out soon enough.
 
I think Hughes has better straight wrestling credentials than Fitch (not Kos though). Fitch was a .500 wrestling in his best years. I agree though that if Hughes is training at a high level (questionable after his exodus from Militech) he would beat most top WW. A fight with Kos would be interesting, but I might have to give that to Kos based on him having better standup, how they both did against GSP, better training camp, and some other things. As a Hughes fan, I'd rather see him retire after a few more fights rather than ruin his name with numerous losses. In 2 years, I think he'll be out of the top 10 if he hangs around.
