More Details on Landmark EliteXC-CBS Deal; Kimbo Slice Possible Headliner
Posted by MMA Junkie on February 27, 2008 at 6:48 pm ET

Kevin Kimbo Slice Ferguson and Gary ShawEarlier today MMAjunkie.com (Invalid Link Removed) broke the news that ProElite, Inc., the parent company of Elite Xtreme Combat, appears to be on the verge of signing a landmark deal with CBS that will put MMA on major network television for the first time.

Thanks to Kevin Iole of MMAjunkie.com’s partner site Yahoo! Sports, we now have a few additional details.

According to his report, the official announcement of the deal will come tomorrow. In it, EliteXC and CBS will confirm a four-fight deal that begins with an event in April.

Additionally, Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, the YouTube brawler who earned a lucrative long-term deal with EliteXC in late 2007, will likely headline the first CBS event — either in Atlantic City, N.J. or at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Iole reports.

Ferguson, a former bodyguard in the pornography business who now trains with MMA legend Bas Rutten, most recently defeated veteran slugger David “Tank” Abbott in the main event of the organization’s Feb. 16 “Street Certified” show. The event, which drew a sold-out crowd of 6,187, set a record live gate for the University of Miami’s BankUnited Center.

Ferguson, who hails from Miami, was the primary draw for the event. As MMAjunkie.com previously reported, he earned an event-best base salary of $175,000, according to the Florida State Boxing Commission. Additionally, since our initial report, MMAjunkie.com has been informed that EliteXC officials, including EliteXC live events president Gary Shaw, and Ferguson have met and discussed a possible contract extension.

According to Iole, CBS is expected to air the EliteXC events on Saturdays as live two-hour broadcasts, most likely from 9 to 11 p.m. ET.

EliteXC, which was formed as a partnership with Showtime Networks Inc. in 2006, had previously aired almost all of its events on the subscription-cable channel. Earlier today Sam Caplan of fiveouncesofpain.com passed along a report that stated Showtime subscription totals rose 11 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007. A highly publicized October “ShoXC” event and a major November EliteXC show likely played a role in the increase.

Showtime is owned by CBS, which is an investor in ProElite.

I saw this. This could make EliteXC huge. Wow Zuffa really blew it by letting this get away from them.

Semtex better stick around for this. Now you can watch the events live, that's one of the 6 channels you get, right?

It's a massive 20 channels. Yes, I'm a poor aging, grad student, but this will change soon. :head:

Semtex would be a huge star, bruv. (Got it right this time)

Yeah, he could be huge, with his style and personality. People on this forum would probably think he was stupid, wouldn't get his witty humor.

About how much money do you think you'll be making when you land your first job?

Isn't it funny that Kimbo, a thuggish street fighter and porn bouncer is gonna be the first big star on network t.v.

It would be funny if I didn't have to hear about it all the time and if people didn't think he was indestructible.

That's actually what strikes me the most about the whole Kimbo phenomenon. He came from nothing and is sky rocketing into "real" fame and some serious fortune.

Regardless of all the arguments about his legitimacy as an "MMA" fighter, I kind of like these rags to riches stories.

Yeah, the Kimbo love/MMA ignorance gets old pretty quickly. He's exciting and has some potential, but damn.

Absolutely, I'm happy for Kimbo, he's doing everything right. Like Rodja said, it's the ignorant fanboys that get very annoying.

That is true too. The majority of the people I've had conversations with, where the theoretical question was posed regarding a Rampage vs Kimbo fight, picked Kimbo to win without a blink.

With that said, I can't deny that I'm a Kimbo fan myself.

Rampage would wipe the floor with Kimbo.

I agree. Wipe the floor though? I guess intellectually I know Rampage is in a whole other class then Kimbo, it's just hard for me to imagine Kimbo getting the floor wipe treatment.

Kimbo won't have the advantage in strength or athleticism plus Rampage is infinitely more experienced and his wrestling would make for a short fight. I know that Bas is training Kimbo, but Bas is not known for his wrestling (watch his fight with Randleman for a reference).

Thats what I tell everyone. Rampage might not prefer the ground, but he knows the ground and Kimbo would be like a turtle on his back in comparison to Rampage, but everyone I've talked to is convinced Kimbo "wouldn't be taken down." I know, I know, you don't have to tell me....

They're really basing "Kimbo wouldn't be taken down" on a whole hell of a lot:lol: He could be money, or he might suck. He seems pretty athletic and played football, so that's a decent start. When I'm ignorant to a sport I keep my mouth shut, why do these people insist on contributing their -2cents?

OT, since we're on the topic of ignorance + MMA. There are a group of fighters, about 6 of them, from the MMA fight gym, Millenia around where I live (one of these guys, his name slips me right now was on this upcomnig season of TUF - he gets kicked off early) they're going around clubs and strip joints in this area, picking out bouncers and jumping them "to make a statement."

My friend who's a bouncer got hit in the back of the head with a bat and while he was out, they kicked his front and bottom row teeth out, came back the next night and did it again to another bouncer.

My workout partner who's good friends with this bouncer that required dental work, trains at another fight gym (new Pimp It Fight Team) considered showing up at Millenia with some fighters and fighting their entire gym as repayment. Wouldn't that be something. A new age Kung Fu Dojo war.

Sorry, that's my ranting about ignorant people

Damn, those dudes deserve to get shot. Sorry about your friend, that's fvcking bullsh*t. The Dojo war would be incredible, make sure to tape that if it goes down.

This is why many think that MMAers are nothing but thugs.

Absolutely, many clubs/bars out in L.A. have banned TAP OUT shirts because too many people have rolled up in their TAP OUT crews and started fights.

Jumping somebody, really diminishes the notion that you're a disciplined, athlete fighter, but ironically, that seems to be the message they think they're perpetuating when they jump someone with their TAP OUT shirts on. Ridiculous.

That's a beast that they banned TAP OUT shirts:thumbsup::lol:

You had to switch to Affliction gear then right. :stick: ;)

whoa whoa whoa, what the fvck is up with the "Thinner" av, scared the sh*t out of me, I looked around the room and sh*t.

Didn't even see the sig to go along with it until now. I wasn't 100% sure if it was directed towards me, just confused and frightened, that was perfect.

Alex, have you been eating a lot less than normal to avoid bf gain? You could probably maintain your weight but lose comp if you ate like normal or little less since you're more sedantary.

It's just hard for me to eat. Getting groceries is a pain in the a*s. Plus, when I'm on a schedule I eat much better. I'm just laying around all the time and it's difficult to even get motivated to eat. I'm not that worried about it. I'll gain back at least half of it within 2 weeks of being able to walk. I'm pretty pissed off too, which might help.

****ing great now the first time there is MMA on network TV there is a no good street thug criminal fighting. Great, just what the sport needs. :frustrate
