Bomb Threats at School

My son just texted me. They just got their 2nd bomb threat in 2 days at his school. (He's a freshman in high school) This is pretty new for his school, but not for most of the high schools in the county. One of them has had on average about 1 per week.

They are catching very few of the individuals involved. Not many of them are dumb enough to do it by phone anymore. Most are writing things on the walls in the bathroom, or notes taped to walls, etc.

I am really at a loss as to what can be done. They cant make public examples of most of those doing it because they are minors. Public flogging or caneing comes to mind, but this is the USA and we kinda frown on that stuff.

So, my boy is standing out in a field with the rest of the students, waiting for the administration to figgure out if school will be canceled for the rest of the day. I cant go get him, the school is effectively in "Lock Down"
 
Yeah i hear ya...its frustrating. The district that I live in had over 20 threats last year (And i live in yuppie suburbia). Just a bunch of kids who thought it was funny. They ended up arresting some and then extended the school year 3 weeks to make up for all the lost time. This year, so far at least, there havent been any threats.

The district did a good job turning the good students against the few who were doing this so it no longer became "cool" to do it. Funny how that probably had more of an impact on those kids than any legal action.
 
Blame the news. As things happen and progressively become more common, it's because people/kids/humans see it and hear about it. And the most common place they see/hear it, is the news.

Weird rant.
 
I agree that the media can play a huge part in things like this, but I think they have handled this situation pretty well. Downplaying it as much as possible while still reporting it. Just don't think they are to blame in this case :)

I agree. These kids are just being irresponsible jerks. the media attention probably adds some fuel to the fire, but the fire is already well lit.
 
People who really want to bomb something aren't gonna give you a clue. They do it for attention, not prepared for a test, senior prank, or because they're just too damn selfish and don't care if others are sent home early while unnecessary.

Never really got what "lockdown" meant. it seems like more of a "here i come to save the day" thing than anything else. My friends mother was talking to me about her sons lockdown policy.

listen to this.
1. all blinds open but away from the windows (so the police can see you)
2. Lock the door
3. huddle in a corner
4. no one can leave or enter the school (parents)

here is how i took it:
1. the shooter can see you
2. bullets vs locks....who wins
3. easier to shoot
4. Lets just sit here instead of running from the shooter


if i were a student id be in my car gunning it out of there. god help a teacher that tried to tell me stay for the fun.

A little OT, but I remember our senior prank. It was harmless, but funny. About 10 of us made a huge penis (10 feet tall) out of chicken wire and papermache (sp?) and a set of balls. We painted it pink and put it in front of the school for everyone to see it. It was one of the best times of my life. :nutkick:
