Benefits Of Fish Oil Supplements Using Oil In Ester Form

Loaded with omega 3 fatty acids, the benefits of fish oil supplements are numerous. Known for the positive effect it has on heart health, joints and the brain, omega 3 is one of the latest buzzwords in a healthy diet. Because the body does not naturally produce this vitally important compound, it needs to be obtained through foods or supplements.

While many people believe the best source of omega 3 is in plant foods such as walnuts or flax seed, they may be unaware that there are two different types. Plants produce short chain omega 3?s, however, the long chain version of this compound contains DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), which have been proven to provide more abundant health benefits. DHA and EPA are known as essential fatty acids (EFA?s).

Fish is the best source of these beneficial fatty acids. However given the influx of deadly toxins that are carried by fish, it is recommend they only be consumed one to two times a week. Given this fact it is difficult to get adequate amounts of omega 3 in our diets. Thankfully, fish oil supplements can safely help to make up the omega 3 shortfall.

If you have no serious health conditions, you need about 1000 mgs of omega 3 daily. This means in order to see the benefits of fish oil supplements you should take two 500 mg soft gels daily.

What Are The Health Benefits?

With the American Heart Association recommending that everyone increase their intake of omega 3, the health benefits of fish oil are numerous. Studies have shown that a diet filled with omega 3 fatty acids helps improve cardiovascular health, immune response, anti inflammatory action, brain function, vision, joint function and mobility and skin. In addition, with more than 100,000 scientific studies published on the benefits of fish oil supplements, and fish oil, it is a wonder that everyone does not include it in their diet.

The Superiority Of Fish Oil In Ester Form

Most people have not heard of the ester form of fish oil, largely because it is so expensive to manufacture. There is only a handful of manufacturers out there which produce fish oil in ester form. From a bioavailability point of view it is the most superior form of fish oil. Fish oil is usually manufactured in triglyceride form, and while still beneficial, it cannot be readily absorbed until the body converts it to ester form. In triglyceride form, the oil has a difficult time passing through the cell membranes, thus the body sees significantly less of its benefits. By contrast, if the oil is converted to an ester form during the manufacturing process it is easily able to enter cell membranes, allowing the body to use it as instant energy, or store it for later use.

Ensuring Purity

Because of toxicity issues with most cold-water fish, it is crucial to research where the fish, from which the oil is harvested, are derived from. The majority of lakes in the northern hemisphere have heavy levels of mercury, PCB?s and other contaminates. Because of this, most fish oils are imported and transported a considerable distance before they are made into a capsule form. Given their long trek, additives must be put into the oil so that it will not spoil during the journey. In order to ensure that the oil you are using as pure it is important to use a product that has been molecularly distilled to filter out contaminates, impurities and additives.

Benefits of fish oil supplements - The Importance Of DHA

DHA is the more important Omega 3 fatty acid. It is believed to constitute the ?building blocks? of the brain. In addition it has been shown to provide greater cardiovascular benefits than EPA and is more effective at boosting ?good? HDL cholesterol and lowering the levels of dangerous triglycerides in the blood. Because of this, DHA content should be one of your main considerations when comparing fish oil brands and you should aim for at least 250mg. The average industry standard is 120mg of DHA but this is way too low to produce the health benefits associated with this amazing EFA.

While the benefits of fish oil supplements are many, it is important to remember that they are not all created equal. When looking for a quality supplement, make sure it is the highly superior ester form, has been molecularly distilled and contains at least 250mg (and preferable more) of DHA.

Glyceryl is an ester!

After searching through his website, I was unable to find (1) what type of ester he is referring to (2) any references to research supporting his claim that these are more bioavailable. He did make a nice list of references to research on regular fish oil. Isn't that nice? Last I checked, fish oil ethyl ester is less bioavailable, it's a leftover flop from the pharmaceuticals companies from 2 years ago, when they tried to make prescription strength fish oil happen. (it didn't happen)

So ethyl ester is better because the research shows it's less bioavailable?
Beckermann B, Beneke M, Seitz I.
Bereich Forschung und Entwicklung der Troponwerke GmbH & Co. KG, Köln.

Comparative Bioavailability of Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid from Triglycerides, Free Fatty Acids and Ethyl Esters in Volunteers. The bioavailability of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from triglycerides, free fatty acids and ethyl esters was investigated in 8 female volunteers in a randomized triple cross-over trial with baseline control. EPA/DHA was administered in capsules in form of triglycerides (1.68/0.72 g), free fatty acids (1.35/1.065 g) and ethyl esters (1.86/1.27 g). The resulting EPA/DHA plasma levels were determined and evaluated. The mean relative bioavailability of EPA/DHA compared to triglycerides was 186/136% from free fatty acids and 40/48% from ethyl esters. Maximal plasma levels were about 50% higher with free fatty acids and about 50% lower with ethyl esters as compared to triglycerides. The tolerability of the free fatty acids was much worse than that of triglycerides and ethyl esters. The main side effect was eructation.

Any ideas as to whether or not this is the same for CLA as well? Just got the CLA-EE from PP and hoping its not worse then the tonalin I switched out for.

I asked him about it when he first brought that product out.

From my understanding, the ethyl form was used for a more tolerable flavor, since it is sold in bulk.

I don't think there exist's any worthwhile research to compare the ethyl ester, glyceryl, and free-form preparations. This is because unlike looking at DHA or EPA, CLA can mean one of 4 things (isomers). A change in isomerization and ratios, in a scientific realm, would require a different comparisson.

That being said, Tonalin and Clarinol are the two with the bulk of the research behind them. Let's call them your "safe bets"; you know what to expect with them. Taking something else is a gamble. It could be within the same expectations, it could be better, or it could be worse. In this case, we've got 2 variables: isomerization and esterification.

A legitimately superior form of omega 3 fats does exist, but it is not an ester, it is a phospholipid. It is naturally occurring in Krill oil. The idea is similar to Siliphos, the bioavailable phospholipid bound milk thistle extract. It is backed by research. The DHA and EPA amounts in krill oil look small in comparison to fish oil, but is actually much more useful to the body. It is also a potent antioxidant, way more so than fish oil, therefore scavenging free radicals in the body as well as extending the shelf life of the tablets. I can post some research abstracts if anyone is interested.

The higher bioavailability also makes for way less pills to pop. Three small pills daily compared to 5-10 Mega EFA tablets. I get my NKO (standardized krill oil) from swanson (as long as its NKO its from the same company) for about $18/month.

supposed to be no fish burp, although some reviewers said the capsules themselves smelled bad. I'm guessing from the smaller amount of oil. I ordered some that will be here monday, I think. I'll let you know how they are for me. I'm pretty psyched for this order to get here, there are a bunch of goodies to try. Krill oil sounds awesome on paper.

Beware of sites like that, that say "know what I know" type stuff. From glancing at the site, everything is highlighted and very suspicious. Looks to me as nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

Evaluation of the effect of Neptune Krill Oil on chronic inflammation and arthritic symptoms.
Deutsch L.

Sciopsis Inc. Evidence Based NutraMedicine, 18 Corso Court, Richmond Hill, Ontario L4S 1H4, CANADA.
J Am Coll Nutr. 2007 Feb;26(1):39-48

OBJECTIVES: a) To evaluate the effect of Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) on C-reactive protein (CRP) on patients with chronic inflammation and b) to evaluate the effectiveness of NKO on arthritic symptoms. METHODS: Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study. Ninety patients were recruited with confirmed diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and/or rheumatoid arthritis and/or osteoarthritis and with increased levels of CRP (>1.0 mg/dl) upon three consecutive weekly blood analysis. Group A received NKO (300 mg daily) and Group B received a placebo. CRP and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis score were measured at baseline and days 7, 14 and 30. RESULTS: After 7 days of treatment NKO reduced CRP by 19.3% compared to an increase by 15.7% observed in the placebo group (p = 0.049). After 14 and 30 days of treatment NKO further decreased CRP by 29.7% and 30.9% respectively (p < 0.001). The CRP levels of the placebo group increased to 32.1% after 14 days and then decreased to 25.1% at day 30. The between group difference was statistically significant; p = 0.004 at day 14 and p = 0.008 at day 30. NKO showed a significant reduction in all three WOMAC scores. After 7 days of treatment, NKO reduced pain scores by 28.9% (p = 0.050), reduced stiffness by 20.3% (p = 0.001) and reduced functional impairment by 22.8% (p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: The results of the present study clearly indicate that NKO at a daily dose of 300 mg significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces arthritic symptoms within a short treatment period of 7 and 14 days.
