LDL HDL levels

okay so I don't know the full story here, but my sister was blabbing on and on about what her teacher told her...He was obviously against AAS use, his main reason was that it negatively and permanently effects ur LDL and HDL levels, which ultimately take "years" off your life...

was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what there talking about and some research to disprove these claims...

Many steroids do in fact cause LDL to increase and HDL to decrease. These effects are temporary however from everything I've read (serious, but temporary).

If used for very long periods of time, AAS can effect your HDL and LDL levels permanently. If you do one or two cycles per year (12-16 weeks) and take the proper percautions while on, then you shouldnt have any problems. This is why its very important to get blood tests before and after cycles, to see where you stand in this regard.

Through liver damage? Trying to understand the mechanism for "permanent" changes.

Higher dosages of test( and other steroids) can negatively impact cholesterol, lowering HDL( good cholesterol )and rasie bad cholesterol. If take proper precautions like Idunk said there usally is no problem...

Specifically, supplementing with at least 1200mg of Red Yeast Rice ed is said to be an effective way to protect lipid values. RYR should be preloaded for 10 days prior to cycle start and continued through post cycle therapy. You will also need to mega dose CoQ10 at 300mg ed while using RYR.

It is valid but overblown. Orals have the greatest effect on lipids by far. A gram of test knocks your HDL off by 30-50% (seen much bloodwork), but orals (superdrol) will take it to single digits in 3 weeks. Everyone should take Policosanol for just this reason.

tried it.. didn't help (with orals). :(
RYR is probably better during post cycle therapy. CoQ10 is great anytime.
Policosanol prevents the clotting, so even if your lipids are screwed up, the effect on the heart is minimal (or less).

So much for RYR...sorry to hear that. What dose for the Policosonal - 20mg/day? Heard it takes several months (like Hawthorn Berry) of supplementation before it kicks in.

i suppose you can do 10-40mg, im not sure about 'kick-in' time however. RYR is awesome, just off cycle.

Changes in HDL:LDL ratio are not permanent. I give a brief overview of what the ratio means to your body here Invalid Link Removed

Elevated levels of HDL can actually reverse the damage done by cholesterol and high LDL levels by shuttling the cholesterol that has built up in the intima of arteries back to the liver. In addition, most changes to the liver are not permanent either: as long as the architecture of the liver is maintained, normal function will eventually return. Without trying to sound condesending, there is no such thing as good or bad cholesterol. Cholesterol is cholesterol and that's that. The HDL and LDL are lipoproteins that shuttle cholesterol; HDL shuttles cholesterol to the liver for bile production (good) and LDL shuttle cholesterol to the periphery which is then likely engulfed by macrophages which, when they die, deposit the cholesterol (or leave, rather) in the arteries.
Hope this helps.

It is also interesting to note that most hormones are synthesized from cholesterol (ie. testosterone in the testes) and that the cholesterol used in this synthesis is acquired from plasma cholesterol.

Fit,

I got my blood results back today and the doc was a little concerned.

My HDL level was 22
LDL-139
Tris-162
and something else-182

I have been off cycle of orals for over a month now and levels still screwed up a bit. I am going to get some RYR and COQ10 along with omega pills and so forth.

I hope this goes away to say the least.

I'd assume that "something else" is Total Cholesterol. From my understanding your Total/HDL ration should be under 5 to 1 to be considered healthy. I had similar tests (actually I think my HDL was even lower) about a month after a Havoc cycle. I this is why like Idunk said earlier in the thread that bloodwork is important. To determine when your levels return to baseline. To you by chance have an pre-cycle bloodwork? I really wish I had the funds or better insurance to get bloodwork more often.

Yeah sorry about the ignorance "something else" I didnt have anything to write with and that slipped my mind.

As far as baseline tests go, yes I do have a few but I would have to ask for a copy from the doctor. I didnt ask for it prior because the doc didnt seem concerned but thats really no excuse. I am going to try multiple things to get straightened out and go back for another test in a couple of months.
