South Florida

Moved to south Florida at the end of January. Talked about moving a while ago but don’t think I updated yall on actually moving. It’s been a little rough to be honest, it’s different here. Have already been reared ended in traffic and also had some schmuck threaten me and my family in a road rage incident. Also living with the In laws has proven to be a little more than I imagined. Nothing crazy and we still get along (I loved them like my own parents). It’s just I don’t have my own space so I don’t have my own place to decompress. Anyways, the hiring process for fire departments here take literally forever, so have applied to multiple places but still in process. In the mean time I got a job Bussing at Flanigans. Which is a super popular restaurant here, it’s like TGI Fridays but with a Florida fishing/Cajun twist. I guess I’m more venting than anything but I was going to ask who else here lives in south florida, if so, what are some recommendations for things to do. I’ve gone to the beach a few times but that’s about it.

I hope you're able to find the type of fire department job that you're looking for.

I've never lived in south Florida, but enjoyed visiting.

Not having a place to yourself to decompress can be challenging. I'm not sure what you're into hobby wise, but I try to combine decompressing with other things I like to do.

I lived there up until recently.

There's a lot of interesting things to do, depending upon your interests.
I put a link, with a lot of good suggestions.

There are also smaller parks, which I found relaxing. And I love to fish.... Charter boats, shoreline/piers, and lakes.
The are some fantastic restaurants down there. Some of the best seafood restaurants you'll find ... But also some Premium steakhouses. I was blessed to know a good many Chefs down there, so they occasionally prepared us food at home, which was Awesome!

I was going to mention the airboat rides (which is on the list).
And if you like any kind of Sports, Miami has the Dolphins, Heat, and the Marlins ... And there's also the Panthers (pro hockey).
The list mentioned a boat ride that includes going past "Millionaire's Row" (some of the wealthiest and most famous people in the country).
But I used to enjoy driving right past their homes (I actually got to work in some of them while I was down there). While I'm not overly distracted by money or possessions, it is interesting.
And of course... Not too far from there, are a multitude of theme parks.

I Generally enjoy a more laid back lifestyle now, after leading an Incredibly Exciting lifestyle in my younger years.

I hope you enjoy your time.

:)

Me too, I’m worried because it seems like across the board departments here are significantly higher call volume. Which sucks because not sleeping on shift messes up your health so bad. This is the geriatric capital of the US so I guess I should have known that. After my 2nd kid I don’t really have any hobbies now, basically the gym is the only free time I get to myself.

Awesome reply, definitely going to hit up that list. Yeah I thought it would be a little more chill and relaxing here, but driving alone is the most stressful thing. People absolutely love their horn here. It doesn’t seem like much but having people honk at every stoplight gets stressful. I just get mad lol.

It's too bad you don't fish. It's really good down there. Like Renew it love it... once May hits up here I'm on the ocean most days through Nov

I do like fishing. Especially here vs Texas. I fish off the canal in the backyard, which is pretty cool but there’s nothing really crazy in the canals because it’s pretty shallow, to be honest for good fishing you need a boat here. The family had one but the younger brother wrecked it lol. In July I’m going lobstering with family friends that go every year, pretty stoked about that.

If you explore you can do alot on foot.

True, Maybe I need to ask people the spots then, because I’ve been to a few inlets, one being haul over, where they film boat zone ( met the cameraman for boat zone and that was actually pretty cool) and there was dozens of dudes catching absolutely nothing lol.

But that is a great idea, thanks man.

I don't think I fished the canals while I was there (for some reason), but if I did ... I'd Definitely try the timeframe of 45 mins before sundown through 1 hour after sundown (using an organic bait).
If you do.... Let me know how it goes.

:)

In the morning when I'm on the computer I'll send you a PM with what I would do fishing wise if I was in your shoes. Tips, times, etc. As long as the water is moving (ie not slack tide) 1hr pre/post sun up/down are good general times.

The kinda tips I need! Hell yeah, I will!

More awesome tips I need, yeah I have no clue about times and stuff like that, I appreciate it.

Moving in with the inlaws would be a bit challenging! I love my family but I have no desire to live with any of them lol.

when I told guys at work back in Texas, every single one of them said there is no way they could live with their mother in law lol. I’m super easy going but women who are older tend to be super stubborn lol

In SWFL for 20+ years. It feels like the population has tripled. Traffic is insane during season. Florida has basically three big things people do. Golf, Fish, Drink...and they mix them all together.

Yeah it seems like this is a hot destination to move to. LOL not a bad combination. My father in law golfs 4 days a week.

Its been crazy over the last 5 years. Property values have gone up like crazy but the amount of people is slowly choking everything.

Yeah. Now that our house is selling in Texas we are about to hit the Florida market. Not too excited about it because I’ve already been browsing realtor and the values are insane.

Especially where you are...its way better over on the west coast in terms of affordability. Anything east coast near Miami is $$$$$$$

Yep. I lived in the Ft Lauderdale area, and worked in a lot of Mansions, and high priced condos and apartments.

I got blessed with a nice little house with a pool (that I rented) for 12 years or so.

I was looking for somewhere to move, and I called a friend, who said, "You called at the right time".
He was moving out of that house, and with his recommendation, I was able to just move right in, with Incredibly low rent, which never increased while I was there. The owner was steadily doing upgrades while I was there.
When I finally moved out (out of State), I just left him the house full of nice furnishings which I had accumulated.
That was a Rare find.

My buddy is in your area and he's not happy with all the people moving there. He usually complains to me about it because I live in Connecticut and he says that everybody that's f****** it up is from the Northeast lol. Lots of people from New York and Boston moving into his area and I don't blame him for being pissed off. I'm not judging everyone, but as a whole, New York City and Boston people both suck, they're like the worst of the worst lol. Bad manners, bad drivers, and delusional self images about being big shots because they're from New York or from Boston.

I go to Florida once (sometimes twice) a year for vacation and I've noticed the last two times I've gone all the new condo complexes popping up and how much more traffic there is everywhere.

Yup, he's not lying. The Red Sox spring training facility is 3 miles form my house so it gets nuts during that period. Its better during the offseason but the town usually cleared out and now its full year round. Covid pushed a lot of people here as well.

LOL. When I was a kid everyone in Washington complained about "those damn californians" and now I can tell you WA State is basically 60% Californian. its nuts.

ha we go to Peoria (Mariners) for spring training and its insane. Golf courses go from like $35 to $190 for a tee time. everything is nuts that time of year. I feel for you.
