Recovery

In another twist to 2020, I've been scheduled for surgery later this year. The doctor predicts I'll be benched for about 3-5 months...After just getting back to the gym.
I was just wondering if there's supplements available that could help speed up the recovery from surgery, like we have for speeding up recovery from the gym?

Thank you

Can I ask what the surgery was for?

Glutamine has been shown to help with wound healing.

8.1Sickness and Glutamine Depletion
In the critically ill (hospitalized) glutamine has an elevated importance. Demand for glutamine is increased in the kidneys, immune cells, and the intestinal mucosa during these periods in response to cachexia, infection, and trauma.Invalid Link RemovedInvalid Link Removed It is common, however, for glutamine need during these states to exceed the capacity of skeletal muscle to synthesis glutamine; this results in a reduction of the free (intra-cellular) glutamine pool in the body.Invalid Link RemovedInvalid Link Removed With this reduction in glutamine comes a reduction in protein economy and alterations in metabolism (increase in protein catabolism, decreased levels of enzymes and hormones using glutamine as a building block).Invalid Link Removed Due to these reasons, one of the main interventions for glutamine is rehabilitative and in response to sickness rather than merely preventative.

Creatine could also be beneficial. So, I would take 5-10g of Invalid Link Removed a day and 5g of Invalid Link Removed a day. Invalid Link Removed might also help, but it's a very pricey supplement and you have to take a lot to see any benefit.

Thank you for the glutamine suggestion, and link. I've used HMB in the past, but didn't really get much. It was supposed to be the best form of leucine around, Muscletech Clear Muscle.

The surgery is a remodelling of my jaw and mouth. It's a realignment my jaw+extractions+grafts+implants.

I actually had a very similar surgery done when I was 17. I had an underbite so they sawed into my jaw and extended it. It took me a LONG time to recover and I had to wear this plastic **** in my mouth for like 6 months afterwards. So, all I can say is good luck brother! You should be able to workout soon, and everything will be fine. I remember being on hydrocodone for a pretty long time after it too.

Clear Muscle is still around, but it's probably too underdosed to help. Probably if you just got some good whey protein concentrate (if you can tolerate the concentrate) that's going to have a lot of helpful stuff in it for healing. Something like Invalid Link Removed would be perfect. There's lots of growth factors and compounds for healing. Something like Invalid Link Removed might help too, as it has a ton of growth factors and sh!t in it that would help with bone growth. You would need to take a couple grams a day though.

Damn! I can't believe the person who replied is someone who's gone through the same kind of thing. My jaw was broken when I was 17 and it didn't heal correctly, which lead to part of this. Roughly how long did it take for your jaw to recover enough to start back at the gym?

Colostrum is another good shout, which I'd forgotten about, so thank you again. I take whey, creatine and a multi anyway, so I'll definitely look into adding glutamine and colostrum for my recovery.
