Gym mirrors playing tricks on me....

Hey guys I just got back from the gym and wanted to ask something.

I briefly viewed my physique in the gym change room infront of their mirror and I looked exactly like the body ive always wanted.

I get home and look at my mirrors and I look doughey and not even close to what I saw at the gym.

I dont understand..... Anyone?

Lighting.... comparisons to others... being "into it"... etc.

Yeah, I always look better in full length mirrors too. Lighting has a MAJOR effect regardless of the mirror being used like MB said.

When I take a shower I have to take my conact lens' out. When I get out and look at myself in the mirror, the lighting, associated with the different view that my eyes give me makes me look absolutely ripped for some reason. I could never figure that one out either. It's not like it's blurry or anything, just more amplified.

Honestly, I think it's more or less of the actual "change" of however you view yourself regularly that gives you a different view of yourself than what you're used to.

Pictures IMHO do the best when viewing yourself. I'm always surprised at how much better I look in a pic than what I see in the mirror. But that's just because we're always trying to get better and never satisfied...

Absolutely has to do with lighting. I also favor the way i look at my gym's mirror than my half length i have in my bathroom.

you may have also been pumped at the gym. I know i look ten times better (in my own mind at least) when i have a pump than when i dont.

yea also its how close you are. Bathrooms tend to be pretty close, within a few feet. Where as when you see yourself in the gym its usually from a much greater distance. But you are definitely not alone in the differences you see. Thats why as much as people say to not use a scale or measurements I feel like I sort of have to use them. Coz my perception of myself is so wacked out that sometimes I go from thinking a bodypart is my best bodypart in the morning to thinking it is the worst bodypart at night.

I also agree with dickwooton, the pump does a lot especially in the arms... my get bigger by an inch or so when pumped.

Just remember, if you ever compete, or if you go to the beach or something like that, no one sees you like you see yourself in your bathroom mirror. Bodybuilding is about getting big, but it's also about learning how to make others see your strong-points, or your lofty knowledge of lighting =)

This may sound odd, but I didn't believe it at first either. On another board I post on, this came up, and one guy (he's an engineer) said that if you have a long, full length mirror, that sometimes they tend to bow out a little (convex) and it makes you look a little bit bigger. The same if it's concave, it makes you look a little smaller. I checked it out on a mirror in my place, and he's right.

Aside from that, lighting is everything.
