DVD to mpg

This is an off topic, but does anyone know how to take a DVD and convert it into a .mpg or .avi whatever ? I can take files in just about any format and compress them into my .avi4 (?) ipod format, but I am not sure how to take a DVD and put it into an mpg or some type of video file.

Any help is appriciated. Thanks.:bb:
 
I found a few programs, but a lot of them are the 'download and use a couple of times and pay' and I'm not too keen on actually spending the money for it since it is just a trial period for them. Snake, do you by chance know one that works for free unlimited ? PM me if you want.
 
Invalid Link Removed i believe the latest version of divx comes with ripping software and conversion software for free, but i havent used it so it could be a free trial, worth a shot! Otherwise download it, use the free trial, delete, and repeat!
 
if nothing else you get the updated version of Divx that works with nearly every video codec available
 
Well usually I find a program I like and if it costs money I download it using a torrent client, but for a freeware program, you could try bitripper, I've never used it before, but it is a free program to convert to mpeg or avi. Can download with this link Invalid Link Removed
