It's always suggested to keep a clean house, computer, etc. when expecting a delivery. The house part is definately cool with me, but do you guys have any tips for our PC, etc?

I know that once you delete something, it can still be detected by a FED. But what ways, things can we do to permanently delete them for good? I need to basically clean out 2 different PC's at my house. From now on, I will only use my laptop to browse, secure e-mails, etc. That way, I can quickly just go take it somewhere and drop it off if I have to..

But to permanently clean out my two PC;s what should I do?
 
You need to find a program that will first over-write your entire HD with nonsensical data, do this a couple times, then format it completely and re-install everything. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only way to clean them besides physically destroying the hard disks.

I've heard there's a few apps the move the data around on your computer while you're not using it. As long as the spots that had the data that you don't want found have been written over many times, you'll be good.
 
Okay thanx, now all I have to do is find a program like that....prolly find one on cnet, I guess... *twiddles fingers*

Good advice so far. Just formatting or partitioning a drive will not clean it. Make sure you use a program that will zero out the drive. If you're in a situation and you need to clean house, you may want to use a decoy hard drive. If you've got access to a cheap hard drive (older 4-10 gig or something), you can put a clean skeleton install of windows on it with your email account info, drivers, favorite games, etc. You can use this 'clean' drive to swap out with your main drive if you need to clean house. It may not have all your links, contacts, and porn, but it can keep you online and in touch. Obviously, move the main drive off site. I did this after the 'LR scare' a while back and was up and running with a new drive in a couple of hours.
 
The coolest thing I've seen is rigging up the computer with a thermite charge, then wiring it up so you only push one button to ignite it. Go to Invalid Link Removed and download the broken 3 video. It shows you how to do it. This is also a great site to learn everything legal, semi-legal, and illegal about computers. Also on that same broken 3 video there is an excellent interview with Kevin Mitnick, the infamous hacker, and what the government did to him. It is scary. If they did this to an innocous hacker, just think what they will do to us.
 
Putting Thermite in your PC is a bit much IMO. If you wish to make it use 75% Fe Oxide (Iron Rust) & 25% Al shavings. Place a Mg ribbon in it for a fuse and you will have to ignite it with a hand torch or a hight voltage. You can DL a program called Eraser for around $15 bucks that is awesome for cleaning your PC. It will overwrite and erase whatever you tell it to up to 75 passes. You can also dl X-Blocker to rid your PC of spyware. I run both.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply the thermite charge was practical, but if you want to make sure no one can read your stuff, you can't touch thermite for effectiveness :p

Back in junior high, many years ago, we made thermite, stole some mag. strips from school, ignited it and proceeded to go through a cinder block and put a hole in my buddies driveway. Needless to say his dad was not impressed.
 
Jergo check out Evidence Eliminator. Just make sure you get a crack for it before the trial period runs out. There are many programs that will overwrite a hard drive but this is a great one. Check out Invalid Link Removed for all kinds of privacy software. Also the secondary hard drive is a good idea like mentioned above.
 
Eraser is free, at least I can transfer it to you on AIM.. ;)

Evidence Eliminator, Windows Washer, Norton SystemWorks, there's plenty of programs that do this effectively..
 
Yeah, thats the one I'm gonna download pete, eraser from CNET. Sounds like a good program from the user reports. I'm gonna do that to both, and then my brother-in-law deals with some dude that refurbishes computers for a living. I can probably pick up two hardrives off them for cheap. Hell, I don't even really use the two PC's anymore anyhow. So I wouldn't really be missing something if I were to just leave those two decoys in them for good. All the while storing the other two in another house. Thanks for the tips fellas....
 
Norton only uses the 3 pass DOD erase program. At least with eraser you get the 7 pass DOD erase and the ludicrous 35 pass erase. Don't know about the others.
 
Dept. of Defense standard overwriting is 7 passes.. ;)

Eraser goes up to 35 passes, which means you'd be better off re-writing whatever was erased..
