Maybe a long shot, but we have a TV show/Movie thread and a Gaming thread, so figured maybe we have some people who also read.

Not going to be picky even things like comics count to me.

It is that time of year when I get back into re-reading some stuff I regularly read and looking for new stuff, so hearing what others enjoy might help me find some new options.

My favorite book is the Hobbit and my favorite book series is Eragon. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter I was really into when I was younger but it got kind of soft core Pornish about book 10 and I got bored with it. I heard it's really good again though.

Started The Witcher Books recently and I really enjoyed the first 100 pages. Just gotta find the time.

I really want to read Never Will I Die. I can't Remember where I saw it or who recommended it but I hear it's an excellent motivational book. I am curious on what others like that is motivational to get off your ass and be more productive.

Great idea. Excited to see what people recommend. I am a Sci fi/fantasy book reader mostly. Dragons, magic, vampires and crap.

Ya I probably gravitate towards sci fi the most. The Hobbit was one of the first non-kid book I think I read, huge fan.

I keep having to put off re-reading all the Dune books again because the second movie got delayed (I read the first one almost every year).

I am torn between finishing the Three Body Problem series (finished the first not too long ago), finally finishing Children of Time (I need to read the third in the series), or 3 Assassins (first book in a trilogy that the Bullet Train movie was based on).

I always just get overwhelmed by how many options there are. :)

I usually red a couple of different books at a time, with books intended for different purposes. For example - prior to going to bed I don't want to be "taught" or have to think too hard (I've found that it disturbs sleep). Instead, I want something mindless yet entertaining. For example, that might be something like a book from Lee Childs (Jack Reacher), David Baldacci, C.J. Box, J.D Salinger, etc. For self development, something I read during the day - it might be something similar to Crucial Conversations, The Breathing Cure, The Advice Trap, Positive Intelligence, that type of stuff - something more thought provoking.

I recently started reading some HP Lovecraft. So far he has an eerie way of telling stories that leave a lot to the imagination.

I’ve gotta start reading, so following along. I’ve tried the self improvement and mental health type books and can’t get into them

I used to read the Hardy Boys when I was a kid. I started reading them to my son and realized I still enjoy them.

For me personally, most of my reading time is spent in the King James Bible

Ya I tend to read some sort of comic at night if I’m going to read, probably for similar reasons (not to get lost overthinking).

I also do a lot of audio books for when I’m doing stuff like driving, yard work, etc to fill those times with a good book.

Ya some good ones in there.

It can be tough. If I’ve got something I “need” to read, but don’t necessarily want to read I’ll start my day with it and try to just read a page initially until I get buy in. I’m not a big fan of a lot of those self help books, but I won’t derail my own thread and think it’s good some people still might get something out of them I guess. 🙃

So Im an audiobook guy, I can listen to them whenever. Doing chores, relaxing, going to sleep and even when i work out. I just took a look at my Audible library and it has 177 books in it.

Right now im re-listening to the Harry Potter books and im up to The Goblet of Fire. I both re-watch and re-read the movies and books before christmas each year. For some reason they just feel christmasy. At least the first 3-4 books/movies after that it gets a bit dark.

I started using my library card because man those audio book prices add up haha

I think it is all the food or that each book and movie has like a winter break that makes it feel "holiday" festive at times to me too.

The only thing I'm reading these days is these forums, Our Daily Bread devotional and Bible, but if I was motivated to read, I would get into Lovecraft.

Started Children of Memory this weekend.

Just an fyi you can grab a library card and then use the Libby app for books and audiobooks if you like digital reading (and want to save money since audiobooks can add up quick in my experience).

Ya that seems like an issue with some older stuff. I appreciate how some of the newer works don’t seem to dwell on it too long and move the story forward faster.

Im about 3/4 through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix re-read now. I always forget how angry I get at Dolores Umbridge in this book, she is the absolute worst. She is bad in the movie as well, but the book version is so much worse.

Started the Wager during my trip last week. About half way. It’s by the same author as Killers of the Flower Moon.

Got another trip next week may have to pick a couple audio books for the drive.

Finished Deathly Hollows this weekend. That last sentence is such a nice close to the series:
"The scar had not pained Harry for 19 years. All was well."

Started the Dewey Andreas series by Ben Coes this week. I’ve listened to it before but it’s been so many years I hardly remember anything.

You cant go wrong reading medical science themed books esp those that discuss noteworthy scientists who discovered breakthroughs, history of diseases, etc. Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee is a top notch writer who explains scientific concepts to nonscience readers quite well.

A few that I have enjoyed of his are:

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
by Siddhartha Mukherjee

The Gene: An Intimate History
by Siddhartha Mukherjee

There are other authors and books on this theme like Walter Isaacson, an excellent writer.

On CRISPR....

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race
by Walter Isaacson

I read memoirs, all periods. Also, translate or edit those which are out of copyright and republish them.
Any topic well written is worth reading.

I finished the first book of The Witcher Series. It was good but could be hard to follow at times.
Currently just reading peer reviewed articles for my masters. Not fun haha

That’s probably just people from all the time in general I guess. You can still find people interested in reading, just doesn’t seem to intersect as much with the same people you’ll find on here.

Ya didn’t terribly enjoy the first book in the Witcher series…
