Anime for adults

It's been a long time since I've watched any anime. I'm tired of things being edited and censored in order to water down the content to make it suitable for sale in the U.S.
Now, I don't put a priority on sex, violence, or gore, but I certainly don't mind any of it and wouldn't want to avoid it if it's just part of the show. I'm just tired of everything I see on the shelves in the U.S. labeled as 18+ is only labelled so because it's porn, not because it's actually 'mature'. Anyone have any suggestions for a grown man who wants some quality anime?

Only recent anime i've seen is on Adult Swim... I wouldn't mind hearing about some titles to pick up.

Most of the stuff when I was into anime which was 18 cert always had some sort of weird sex/monster/gore thing going on, something the Japanese are eerily good at but not something I'm into. IMO most of the best adult anime were 15 cert, the only difference between the 18 cert and 15 cert seemed to be weird sex scenes.

EDIT- Have to add that from what little I've seen 3x3 Eyes is by far the most complete anime series I've ever seen.

The only anime I remember watching was the series Escaflowne. Not sure if it's your kind of Anime, it's sort of like GUndam Wing, it's been quite a few years but I enjoyed it back then.

I grew up on Robotech and Voltron, but as an adult the only series that I could really stomach was Samurai 7.

I loved samurai 7!!

OP what kind of anime do you like?(that may help narrow down the huge list of anime out there...)

ive watched a few anime films and would also like to know where to find the unedited japanese versions, not the watered down kid friendly version everyone sells.

I got into anime b/c of Adult Swim. Definately check out Berserk. One of my faves; very twisted though. Ghost in the Shell (first and second season) are fun but a lot more intellectual. Both can be gotten with english-dubbing.

Goldenboy ftw.
6 episodes, absolutely hilarious.

Jin Roh - The Wolf Brigade (I only remember pieces, I think it was about a soldier and how he had to deal with shooting a child)

Perfect Blue - It's about this girl that's famous, has a stalker, and starts losing her mind. Really creepy, but really good.

Akira - (self-explanatory)

Trigun - Kinda 'younger' crowd, but still an amazing anime

Record of Lodoss War - Japanese D&D :) If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. Good stuff.

There was one Street Fighter anime...it was a movie, not the alpha series, which was really good. Guile drove a '67 GT500, I am biased.

Berserk - Another vote for berserk.

Ghost in the Shell - The movie, not the series.

um,
last big series I was into was cowboy bebop before it hit the U.S., I think I remember liking blue seed, movies like princess mononoke. It's honestly been ages since I've seen any anime. Last year I watched the first 20 episodes or so of the japanese version of death note, thought it was ok but nothing worth raving about like some people had been at the time. The story itself was cool, I just get really tired of shows that somehow revolve around a high school or high school students. I've been meaning to check out samurai 7 as the box for the set looked kinda cool. I do like gore in my anime, but much more from human confrontation rather than monsters. Not to say that I don't like monster shows/movies, but, they have to be great monsters, not like some of the ones you see where it's practically like an animated version of power rangers. (you know, guy in a giant tacky monster suit type) I like characters like Vampire hunter D (minus the cheesy entity in his hand), spike from cowboy bebop, etc. Something with either a heavy 'gothic' element or with main characters that play good antiheroes. I don't mind subtitles at all, as they're usually a better option than bad english voice overs.

Guyver was cool but at points it was really drawn out...in fact there was one episode that just seemed to use one frame for around 5-10 minutes. Appleseed was a seriously cool anime, Legend of the Four Kings wasn't bad either although thinking of it now it's probably dated horribly.

Always wanted to see Golgo 13...anyone seen it?
PS- Remember this?

I haven't watched anime in years, but Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D were welcomed back when Saturday Anime came on on Saturday mornings on the SciFi channel. Of course, Akira and Fist of the North Star have always been favorites also.
