iPhone, Treo, PDA users read this! New AM feature

If you log into AM from any type of mobile device, it should automatically send you to a smaller, more compact, faster version of the site optimized with everything to fit onto the smaller screens that these devices have (and speed optimized for use on CDMA & EDGE networks - so it should be blazing quick on 3G and WiFi networks).

When you have the opportunity to try this, please report any problems you have with it in this thread. Thanks!

Word, I'll log my NP adventures via PDA if it's available.

Age: 23
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 190lb

Years navigating internet: 10+

I already feel like I'm on here 24/7 so I mean, it's only appropriate...

I noticed that earlier! Was like WTF!?

This is GREAT on my WM6 device with 3G.

I used to get a lot of script timeouts and huge lags when I would surf it before with my phone. Some long threads and the video avatars could kill my device.

Keep up the great work and feeding my addiction to AM.

I see that now... the improvements I see is in the message thread browsing screen its much cleaner and light weight which makes it load faster and thats important for these devices, the one enhancement I'd make is to make the thread view screen width fit to screen...
I'm using a new device high end similar to the iphone which is not released yet and has a large screen and I have to scroll right and left, a better experience would be to make the width=100%
my 2 cents.

The width is already 100% but the problem is with some graphics in signatures, etc. that are wide that push it out a bit. Plus if you're using some new device that we don't have a browser signature for yet, your mileage may vary as well. If it's not released yet, chances are we don't have the right browser info for it to make things display correctly. Them's the breaks for being on the cutting edge. :) Works perfectly on my iPhone and it's been tested on a Trio and a Blackjack as well with no issues so far.

Update: Looks like the reason that some posts get pushed out wider than your screen is because it won't linebreak URL's, especially ones that are in people's signatures. Not a lot that can be done about that.

Gotta say, I noticed this earlier on my iPhone. I'm not a fan, though. One of the main reasons I bought this particular phone was to get normal web pages. Sure, it loads slightly faster but it wasn't that big of a deal to begin with.

There's a "normal version" button at the bottom of the screen for those that don't like it.

strange, on my iPhone right now and the normal button loaded the site like normal. I'll test it more tomorrow. BTW, you said that speed wasn't that much of an issue for you before - you are probably on wifi or 3g. Tons of people are still stuck on CDMA or edge so this helps them immensely.

Works very well on the Q. The only issue I notice is when checking an update for a thread in the RPN forum, I liked to scroll up and direct click to the forum threads to look for new threads - and now there is no direct click.

No big deal, I will take the increase in speed any day.

Same with on my moto Q9m. Also trying to view who gave you reps doesn't work, but who cares about that. pm's and everything else i've tried so far works great!

All the "normal button" has done for me is reload the same page in this same format.

Good call, I just added some navigation up above the thread title to go back to either the main forum page or the parent forum for the thread.

Beautiful...just tried it out - works perfectly.

You just made my life much easier.

Sell me a clue guys. I am not mobile WiFi savvy, nor do I posses anything mobile besides a phone.

Is this something that will have any interface with my kids PSP?

If they get on WiFi from their PSP and load up the board, it should display in the new compact format, yep. Sold. That will be $50, please.

That's an outstanding consult rate you have

Thanks for the tip...and the rest of it as well :D

do you have something that will make it easier to type replies on a freakin psp? what a pain that is.

works well on my blackberry pearl, but I never minded it before either :)

I have an iPhone and the normal button doesn't do anything except refresh the same page. Any ideas?

That's because I haven't fixed it yet. :) It is broken currently - can't get to the normal version from the mobile version. Not sure how it can be fixed...if at all. It checks the browser signature from your phone and directs you to the mobile version automatically if you're on a mobile browser.

I see. I appreciate the work you're putting in to upgrade accessibility and keep this site the best among its peers. Cheers!

At first when this feature because available for my iphone it did not work well, now it does not work at all.
when it first came available it would not let me search from any page but the home page, now it will not let me go to any page but the home page and I bassically can't access the site at all. I tried switching back to the origional verson but it would not let me do that either.
Also because of the formatting when I have my iphone upright the formatting makes the page so narrow (the area with usernames, info etc) takes up so much room only about 2 or 3 words fits side by side and it takes several screens to display a paragraph.

gonna have to give this a shot on my PSP later today.

Please post back here once you try with how it goes. I'm not seeing any of the issues noted above from my iPhone. I do find that browsing a thread is easier if i turn the phone horizontally, but there's only so much you can expect to fit on a screen thats 3 inches wide if you use it vertically. While the iPhone has the neat zoom in/zoom out feature thats really easy to use, everyone needs to remember that this is to help everyone with mobile devices - especially those who want to browse the site on CDMA/EDGE (read: SLOW) networks, not just people with iPhones. When I'm away from home and stuck using the iPhone on AT&T's EDGE network, it's painfully slow to load all of the graphics, etc. due to EDGE download speeds and the fact that where I am currently, AT&T coverage is spotty at best.

If I could just choose to use the Normal version I would be really happy, I have no choice but to use the PDA version and it really sucks for me personally. I use my Iphone on a wifi most of the time and much prefer normal web pages to the compact versions.

I like it and it seems that there have been some improvements to it from the last time I was on it. I noticed that the links to the threads do not have a time and user for the last post, nor do they have links to each separate page. I'm not sure how much that would add to loading times, but if just that would be added it would be just like the regular page :D

Either way it's great!

I tried to switch to the normal version as well but it just loads me back to the front page. How can we deactivate it? Its faster, but no user control panel and you can't see who posted last or the thread starter so I like the old version better.

Costanza said that he didn't know if that problem with the Normal button could be fixed. In addition to getting the last person posted as well as the time of the last post, would it be possible to be able to have the individual pages on the front of the thread? Right now, if you click on a multi-page thread, you have to keep clicking all the way from the first page, which is kind of a hassle. An option to click on an individual page would be great.

It's all or nothing at the moment. I can turn it off and make it go back to showing the regular site, but currently not able to make it so you can change to the normal skin from in that one. Not sure what we're going to do yet... Lots of people love it and say it helps them out a lot and lots of people don't like it.

Can't do a m.anabolicminds.com subdomain?

I just like to see my control panel, diet tracker, amspace, and who posted, helps alot, for me this version is harder to control and navigate. I say, let the Gold Members decide, they ate the ones paying, my opinion doesn't matter.

but myth why not do the subdomain like some sites have like ebay... where if you go to http://www.********* for the regular ebay and then for the mobile version you go to http://m.********* so then everyone's happy!

Can't do that for reasons I can't get into here... good idea in theory though. Will probably just end up taking off the mobile skin anyway and everyone that uses a mobile device on a slow network will have to suffer. :)

I took off the mobile skin a while back. Too many people that used WiFi on their PDAs complained about it so now everyone that wants to use AM on a slow mobile network now has to suffer. Read through this thread and complain to those who were complaining about the mobile skin, don't blame me! :D
