What's At Stake?
Tell FDA: No Food From Cloned Animals

Animal cloning is a new technology with potentially severe risks for food safety. Defects in clones are common, and cloning scientists warn that even small imbalances in clones could lead to hidden food safety problems in clones' milk or meat. There are few studies on the risks of food from clones, and no long-term food safety studies have been done.

Further, the pregnancy complications in cloning cause unnecessary suffering for host mothers, and clones commonly develop with severe deformities and health problems, such as grossly oversized calves, enlarged tongues, squashed faces, intestinal blockages, immune deficiencies, diabetes, high rates of heart and lung damage, kidney failure and brain abnormalities.

Opinion polls show that the majority of Americans do not want food from animal clones and are opposed to cloning on moral or ethical grounds.

The Center for Food Safety has called on FDA to ban the use of clones in food production until the food safety and animal cruelty problems in cloning have been resolved, and until public discussions have addressed the troubling ethical issues that cloning brings. We also call on FDA, in the result that these pre-conditions can be met, to require labeling of food from animal clones.

i actually have been given a brief lesson on this subject.

the problem with cloning animals is that the dna can only be taken from one type of cell....this cell is obviously already differentiated (lung, skin, kidney cell, etc.).

although all of these cells contain the same exact DNA sequence, once a cell is differentiated, the nucleus binds together the DNA with the use of histones (think of it as tying up a bunch of ribbon with twisty ties).

different cells transcribe different sections of the genetic code more frequently in some places than others, and the histones are basically there to tie up the slack that isnt needed as often.

if you clone an animal from one cell, the histones are still bound in many, but not all, of the cells that develope from single implanted (into the uterus of the mother) cell.

basically, although the animal will have cells that have properly differentiated during developement, these cells will still have histones in incorrect places, making the cells extremely inefficient.

this leads to a myriad of rapid onset health defects and an incredible rate of aging.

actually, its not as bad as it sounds. all of the above is more of a "first run" type of deal. scientists have been working on removing these histones from the genetic code of an animal they would like to clone for years now.

Yeah, but you still gotta ask: why? And why the hell would we wanna eat cloned food? There's only one reason they pursue this and it's because a particular "clone" of genetic "peculiarity" is patentable and therefore more profitable to a single company. That's the same reason we pursure GM food and why so much is put into making and marketing new drugs.

In the end, it's all about profit. And those big companies would happily **** your mother for an extra 10k on the bottom line.

In theory its a good idea. All of the meat and products would be ideal, yeild the best amount of meat, and be very consistent in quality.

But I agree with you guys. There is no way I want to eat cloned meat, nor do I agree with this theory. I think jomi822 has some great points about it that the FDA will NEVER disclose. Hopefully the meat packages will have to be marked accordingly so the consumer can choose cloned or non-cloned

All this cloning, genetic modifying, man playing God stuff is not going to help us at all.

New theories are out now suggesting that the massive drop in bee populations are related to GM food crops. As you should know, we depend on bees to do a large part of the pollination required to yield food crops.

Then you've got the GM foods that are popping up in non-GM crops all over, the seeds just being spread by the wind. This poses 2 problems. First, GM foods could possibly overtake natural foods and people can't be sure of what they're eating. Two, the patent owners of these GM crops are allowed to go in and royally **** the farmers whose land the GM seed spread to. This is destorying our centuray old tradition of family farming.

Then you've got this GM super salmon who is a cannibal. If this freak ever got into nature, it could mean serious disaster for natural salmon populations which are already under serious threat.

You've got the disgusting treatment of the animals that provide us with meat and milk, conditions that illustrate we have no respect for an animal whose ultimate sacrifice, that of life, provides us with powerful nutrients. Chemicals are ubiquitous in the mass produced milk and meat we find on shelves. And what happens when we try to find an alternative? Special interests do what they can to slander and destroy that which might serve to challenge their monopolies. Such is the case with raw milk and it seems as though local farmer's markets may start to come under fire as well.

We are losing what was once an intimate connection to our food supply.

All this comes back to us humans. We need clean, nourishing food. We need clean water. We need clean air. No buts about it, these are the basic requirements to stay alive. And yet we insist on continuing to exploit them, experiement with them, risk losing them altogether. It must be that humans have a hidden genetic program aimed towards self-annihilation.
