Dear Danny:
Thank you for contacting me with your opposition to H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. It's good to hear from you.
As you know, it is the sole responsibility of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure the safety of all food and drug products. In light of the recent salmonella outbreaks, I firmly believe that our nation needs to improve our system for ensuring food safety. At the same time, I agree with you that we should be cautious of reform measures that would expand the FDA without clearly defining what responsibilities accompany that reform.
As you may know, the Energy and Commerce Committee recently passed H.R. 2749 by voice vote. This legislation would grant the FDA more enforcement power to investigate food producers and track and recall unsafe food products. Instead of continuing to expand the size and scope of government, we should focus on enforcing the laws currently in place that protect the health of Americans. Please be assured that as Congress continues to discuss food safety reform, including this legislation, I will keep your thoughts in mind.
Again, thank you for contacting me. If you should have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely,
Duncan Hunter
