its a memo/release from the IFBB that judges should look more to symmetry and aesthetics rather than pure size while ignoring distention! maybe this really will lead to a true change in how olympias and other contests are judged

Special IFBB Report – For Immediate Release!

SYMMETRY & NATURAL AESTHETICS

April 13, 2005

IFBB Professional Division

All IFBB Professional Members

Montreal, Canada, April 13, 2005: With a mandate from President Ben Weider, the Professional Committee and a team of expert advisors recently evaluated the issues associated with muscular development, such as size, shape, density, separation and definition, in relation to symmetry and natural aesthetics.

Certain objective criteria are involved in assessing symmetry and natural aesthetics in competitive bodybuilding. Of great significance are the qualities of balance, proportion and the overall “flow of the physique, including classic attributes such as a dramatic “V-taper; from broad shoulders and a wide back to a streamlined waist and a flat, muscular abdomen. In addition, there should be balance between upper and lower body development, and harmony between the left and right sides of the body. These characteristics have been the hallmark of a bodybuilder’s physique for decades, and it is the intent of this Advisory Notice to reaffirm their significance.

Distended abdomens and distorted muscles negatively impact upon symmetry and natural aesthetics and, therefore, detract from the overall physique. Athletes and judges are advised that muscle size at the expense of symmetry and natural aesthetics will not be assessed favorably.

All inquiries regarding the IFBB Professional Division should be directed to:

" streamlined waist and a flat, muscular abdomen."

i still think ronnie is gonna win the olympia this year and Jay really isn't too badly distended so i'm not sure if those two will change, but markus and gunther shouldn't be in the top 6 anymore (they lack the symmetry)

I could see this one coming. I mean, didn't Arnold make some comments about this as he was presenting Dexter with the trophy at the Arnold? Pro Bodybuilding may have a future after all.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't an excuse to out RC...you may see Cutler take the crown.

As much as I'd like to see Dave Henry or Dexter Jackson take it, the didn't say to totally neglect size, I don't think they intend to.

Honestly that's the first thing that came to mind when I read this as well. That'd be a damn shame as well. To suddenly announce this, after they have been turning a blind eye all along, is pretty shady. Ronnie dramatically improved his midsection this past Olympia vs. the year prior, not many people even give him credit for that, people just go out of their way to find a less than flattering pic , regardless of when it was taken, just to try and take away from the man. F8cK that, Big Ron lives and breathes this sport 24 / 7 and I think it is some real pussy sh!t if they really are trying to oust him with this. The man is on his way out the door anyways, why change the rules when he is so close to accomplishing what he has set out to do.

I also feel bad for guys like Ruhl, as someone noted above this does not look good for him. It's a shame, I just watched " Made in Germany" and have some newfound respect for the guy.

distended guys, synthol, goofy proportions, these are all bad for the sport and should not be given good placing, no matter how much muscularity the invididual has, but, what is the problem with having symmetry and razor conditioning, and being HUGE? I don't think we are yet at the point where there is soo much muscle it does not fit on their skeleton and is just a jumbled mess. At least I do not think that Ronnie, or Jay, or Priest , or Cormier look like that

Wonder if this will make the sport more dangerous at least in the short term. You think some bbers with distended guts might try to have surgery to reduce the size or would the scars be too noticable?

nothing at all and so long as they have great symmetry and proportions than their huge muscularity will only add to them and they'll win .. i don't think this was a direct assault on ronnie per se .. he does have great proportions and symmetry so long as you ignore his bloated gut .. ronnie is one of the greatest BBers ever .. but his gut really detracts from him .. did he slim it down at this past olympia? sure .. some, but look at dexter's, darrem's, hell even cutler's waist measurements (and jay genetically has a wide waist) in proportion to their shoulders and the seeming proportions are in those three favor .. his gut is gross .. even at this past olympia and the pregnant look is not IMHO what bodybuilding should aspire to .. now if a guy comes in with "symmetry and razor comditioning and [is] HUGE" then he definitely should win .. however Ronnie doesn't have that over all proportionality that is so important (at least i think) in BBing .. bodybuilding isn't just about who has the most muscle .. its about who has the most muscle while retaining an aesthetically pleasing physique with conditioning and sharp lines

this really is great news. The science of BB'ing and proportions are truly the best part (aesthetically), and this should lend itself to the (hopeful) return to health and fitness as the prime focus not freak factor. And as for freak factor fans, it's not like people focused on proportions can't get freaky. In fact, the better the proportions, the freakier they (you/we) are!!!

I like to see the freaks! If you don't want to see distended guts they have natural shows for that.

Of course there is a happy medium between the two. Arnold had an incredible physique for his time. If the current crop of pros can keep the waistline in check and balance their freaky proportions we could really see the sport taken to another level. Think about the advancements in training, nutrition, supplementation, and probably anabolics, since Arnold was competing. If the trend becomes a movement away from the abuse of GH and insulin, which I understand to be the two primary culprits of the distended guts, and the pros utilize the research that has been done, I don't see any reason that someone can't excell beyond Arnold's proportions while maintaining the waistline. I wonder how many pros still do vacuums.

Shawn Ray and Chris Cormier are the LAST 2 PRO BODYBUILDERS that I know who can still do Vacum poses! MY favorite Shawn Ray retired without actually saying it that MOTHERF******!!!!!!!! I saw him at the NOC when he was supposed to take the Weider invite I belive in 03 or 04! I feel Shawn had a physique to PUT MOST TO SHAME! I still like Shawn's physique over Cormier, and Dexter.....Shawn had it all in a perfect formula! Is it just me ( hey I LOVE DEXTER NOW!) but does Dexter Jackson have some weird ass shaving bumps on his chest in all his pics....he needs to take care of that!
