Can Too Much Thyroid Medicine Destroy Thyroid?

Hi Everyone,

I was reading the fictitious book, "Chemical Pink". Although unrealistic, it tries to show the life of a female bodybuilder gone wrong.

In the beginning, it describes how the rich boyfriend Charles had a female bodybuilder named May. She used too many drugs, blew out her thyroid, then gained weight uncontrollably.

http://katiearnoldi.com.s14756.gridserver.com/books/chemical-pink/excerpt/

Can that actually happen in real life?

I know some systems, like with using anabolic steroids, doing too much could permanently shut off natural production. Too much Growth Hormone could cause "Growth Gut" etc. But, what about thyroid?

I've done extensive research into this. There is very little known of how greater than therapeutic doses of testosterone and AAS impact the thyroid. It is known that they can cause high TSH levels. Beyond that, I was unable to find much. I'm mostly just replying with hope that someone replies here with good research!

If we are talking about effects of anabolics on thyroids, this will vary from a person to another just like someone who’s lipid could be in range on a gram of test while some people would have awful lipids. The most common effect on human thyroid function is the reduction of TBG (thyroxine binding globulin), which will result in reductions of total serum T3 and T4, this will also vary with the drugs susceptibility to aromatization and transformation into estrogen. In other words, maybe maybe not. Get bloodwork done

I meant, can someone blow out their thyroid by doing too much thyroid hormone?

I see. So that anecdote in "Chemical Pink" it total fiction?

Yes, taking so many anabolics would cause the masculizing features.

But, she would never "blow up like a Walrus" because she took too much Cytomel?

I am guessing she would have other problems, such as heart problems, etc. But, not permanently damaged thyroid.

Why not read the studies I posted and make your own educated answer to your questions? I gave my input.

I believe what the book is referring to is when female competitors take 200-300 mcg of T3 before a competition, then stop cold turkey afterwards, their metabolism is so depressed that they gain fat like crazy post competition.
They should:
A: not use so much T3
B: ween off slowly

But a lot of coaches put female competitors on massive T3 doses because it gets them shredded quickly.

They make it sound like it’s a permantly damaged thyroid. I don’t think that’s possible. It could be under active secondarily I would guess after, but primary distinction of your thyroid or “blown out” sounds like bro science talk.

Nearly all of the kids in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus who were impacted by the fallout of the Chernobyl accident recovered. The human body is very resilient. Your thyroid will be fine.

Hmmmm.....
I haven't looked into this, However .. we know that systems Can be permanently damaged , like Testosterone production.

So until I see proof of otherwise, I wouldn't rule it out.

.... Plus, it happened in a book of Fiction, meant for entertainment.

:)

Long term damage? Possibly. Permanent? Doubtful.

If it can rebound from years of being attacked by the immune system I doubt some T4/T3 will push it over the edge.

Sounds cool.
I've seen no evidence.

But other systems would agree with your theory.

That's why none of us ever have to worry about going on TRT.

It isn't like the Thyroid is impervious.
I've known several people who's Thyroids were shot.

These kids took T3 for a dozen years, twenty years even, and bounced back fine. What more do you need?

No kids have ever done that with steroids, and been fine.

I'm not saying that you'll kill your thyroid.

I am saying, I've not seen any reasoning here to make it obvious it's safe.

We all have our "feelings" on different things.
Feelings suck when used as facts

i'm thinking of taking T3 and using a pyramid dose to level up and then level back down. is that enough to keep the thyroid from shutting down?

also, are there any supplements that will help with PCT from thyroid hormone?

I'd be interested in hearing @Mike Arnold opinion on this.
But I think he's been pretty busy lately.
