Not necessary which is why they are called supplements.

They do give a nice boost and a good one will aid in your overall performance and progress above baseline results. But it won't make or break you. IF anything they will help with that extra push to get the most out of each training session.

For example...you had a long day, you have no drive, no motivation, but you refuse to skip a lift. Well 1-2 scoops of a pre-workout can get you in the mood to kill it regardless of how bad your day was. Is that essential? No. Is it an aid to help maximize performance? Yes.

There are only three basic needs to sustain human life: food, water, shelter/sleep
All others are secondary either as commodities or supplemental benefits.

So, no.

I would say far from necessary from a physical aspect, but from a mental/psychological aspect, they can be very beneficial. but at the point of mental necessity you should watch out for both physical and psychological dependence.

Absolutely not necessary by any means, IMO, despite the energy and edge they may provide in the gym. Anything that can be accomplished via motivation and good diet is not necessary to be supplemented.
