straps

well before i go up on my weight i try to perfect my form with the weight..i recently got to 225 on my deadlift..my grip just can't get past the fourth..im scared to use straps because i know that i will always be using them there after..so the ques. is should i use the straps or not??

Their is nothing wrong with straps. Why hold your back muscles back just because your grip is giving out. I'd suggest using the straps when needed for deads and doing sets of just bar holds to strengthen your grip. I like to pic a weight I can go for 10 seconds for 2 or 3 sets.

I think to many people automatically assume there is nothing wrong with using straps.. To allow bigger muscle groups to get there fair shake.. etc.

But I also think, if people took the time to work grip enhancing exercises (bb static holds, static grippers, plate pinches).. You'd quickly find out that you can greatly enhance grip strength and just not need the straps as badly as you once thought.

I'm an example of that. No more straps.. no more gloves, and no problem.

Agreed. No matter how much you work grip strength, it will never outlast your back when your reps begin to climb. You can get away with when your reps are low simply because musclular endurance doens't play much of a role when the load is extremely high but once the reps climb your back will always outlast your grip since your incorporating a different stimulus the higher your reps become.

Your reps are kept low therefore there is a difference.

I'll give ya that. ;)

But that don't mean that you shouldn't take the time to build grip strength. Many people here would be surprised at how much better they could do in a relatively short time.

Grip exercises suck though, so most people would perfer to just not do them.

Of course they would do better if you actually focused on it but you will never have grip strenght that matches your back when it comes to failure.

Its a time/benefit factor. To you its worth something, to others its simply wasted time since grip strength can be worked everytime you lift. For many people it doens't need a direct workout.

Its like that with many bodyparts. I know competitors that don't even work abs since they get hit hard enough with exericses that need core stabilization.

i agree with bobo .. for PLers its detrimental to work with straps .. for people looking for hypertrophy they are very valuable IMHO

and i also agree about the abs thing .. i never work them

its up to you. I try to avoid straps but I PL. An Over under Grip will do wonders for holding on to the bar. Most of my DL's are never over 5 reps though. I find an added value in my grip strength for hockey so therefore I do grip work. It depends on your goals.

I go as far as I can without them....I can usually get to the last set or two...but like BOBO said, you're cheating your back out of the best workout possible by not using them, even if only for a few sets.

Well for me, I have small hands and straps really help me alot when doing DB rows, I was able to move up in weight by using the straps, so I personally love them little boogers :)
